Gounod had a particularly strong influence on French composers from the middle of the 19th century. After a classical education, he entered the Paris Conservatoire, where he won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1837. In Rome he developed his interest in church music. He returned to Paris in 1843, after developing a wide knowledge of earlier and contemporary music abroad. Gounod achieved considerable success in the theatre, particularly with his famous opera "Faust" (1859), but the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 brought a largely unprofitable interruption. He moved to England to conduct for the Royal Choral Society, but his influence on English vocal music was not always for the best. Charles Gounod Works
Gounod’s opera "Faust", based on Goethe's drama that had a wide influence over artists of all kinds during the 19th century, is concerned principally with Faust's seduction of Marguerite, whose own redemption is secured, while Faust remains the prey of the devil Mephistopheles. Recital arias from Faust include the Mephistophelean Le veau d'or (The Golden Calf), the tenor Salut! demeure and Marguerite's Jewel Song Ah! je ris.

, French composer, studied at the Paris Conservatory and received the Grand Prix de Rome in 1839. His fame rests chiefly on his operas Faust (1859) and Romeo and Juliet (1867), marked by their richly lyrical romantic music. One other opera, Mireille (1864), had some success. His oratorios (1882) and Mors et Vita (1885) and his funeral cantata, Gallia (1871) are worthy of note. He spent some years in the study of theology and greatly admired the church music of Palestrina. See his reminiscences (tr. 1896, repr. 1970); biography by J. Harding (1973).

http://www.geocities.com/Vienna/Strasse/9275/gounod.htm

Gounod, Charles
* 17. Juni 1818 in Paris

C harles Gounod was devoted to both his church, and his music. His love for composition and performance kept him from joining the clergy, as he looked to music as a source of spiritual inspiration. Born in Paris on June 17, 1818, Gounod stemmed from a family of artists. His father was a talented painter, and his mother was a pianist. As Gounod’s father died when the boy was merely five years old, Gounod was raised solely by his mother. She encouraged his love for music, and gave him his first piano lessons. At school, Gounod relished his music classes the most, and at the age of thirteen decided that he wanted to devote his life to music. His mother, a shrewd businesswoman, as well as an admirable musician, supported Gounod’s love for music but demanded that he complete his academic studies before pursuing a musical career.
