Grainger, Percy (1882 - 1961)
The Australian pianist and composer Percy Grainger, an eccentric figure, may seem of marginal importance. Nevertheless he wrote a number of works that continue to give considerable pleasure, as do some of the remarkable arrangements that he devised. He became a friend of Grieg and of Delius and took a strong interest in the active collection of folk-songs. He gave particular attention to the creation of music not bound by the traditional restraints of form and harmony. In 1918 he became an American citizen. Instrumental Music Grainger's original instrumental music includes the delightful Handel in the Strand, intended for piano trio, piano quartet or string orchestra, and Mock Morris, for either string sextet or violin and piano, or again in arrangements for string or full orchestra. Harvest Hymn appears in various chamber or orchestral arrangements, while Walking Tune remains in its original wind quintet form. Folk-song arrangements for various groups of instruments, sometimes idiosyncratically described as with elastic scoring, include Early One Morning, Green Bushes, Molly on the Shore, Ye Banks and Braes and Shepherd's Hey. Some of these were also arranged for large wind ensemble. Vocal Music Grainger wrote some original songs and choral music as well as solo and choral arrangements of folk-songs. These include the Irish Tune from County Derry, also arranged for wind band, Brigg Fair for tenor and chorus and The Men of Harlech for double chorus and drums.

Percy Grainger - A Brief Biographical Background
Grainger (c. 1922) Born George Percy Grainger, Grainger was born on 8 July 1882 at Brighton, Victoria. His father, John H. Grainger , was a well-known architect whose designs included the Princes Bridge in Melbourne. Quite precocious at an early age, Percy made his first concert tour when he was twelve. Soon afterwards, he went to Germany with his mother Rose to further his training as a pianist and composer. Between 1901 and 1914, Percy and his mother lived in London where his talents flourished. During this time, Colonial Song and Mock Morris were published. In these years he befriended the Norwegian composer, Edvard Grieg, whose love of national music inspired Percy to look closely at English folk music. With the aid of a phonograph, Percy collected songs from folk-singers and from these made many famous arrangements from these. His friendships with many Scandinavian and English musical figures (Herman Sandby, Delius, Cyril Scott, Balfour Gardiner) developed during this period. In 1914, Grainger moved to America, where he lived for the rest of his life. He became an American citizen (although he always described himself as Australian) and during a brief spell in the U.S. Army Bands, he "dished-up" (as he put it) the

Oxford Studies of Composers

Percy Grainger
WILFRID MELLERS, University of York

A man of extraordinary charisma, Percy Grainger was at once a legendary virtuoso pianist, a composer of highly original music, an arranger, and a "disher up" of folk music who pierced to the music's heart, and figure of some historical significance in relation to ethnomusicology and music education. A study of the music of this paradoxical figure, this book looks at the musical influence on his compositions of folk-song and of Grieg, and of those apparent polar opposites, Delius and Bach. It examines some of his more significant pieces in detail; considers his work in recreating traditional material and the music of others; sees him as a champion and transcriber of what is now known as Early Music; and looks at his sometimes alarmingly eccentric notions as to music's nature and purpose. Overriding barriers between art, folk, and pop music, Grainger is difficult to categorize, and is, in the history of music, unique.
"This welcome addition...is remarkable for its strong focus on the composer's music....For a detailed, analytical look at the music and an insightful assessment of Grainger's hard-to-classify contribution, Mellers is indispensable....Highly recommended."

The three ravens
Folk text Set by Goto: Dutch Translation There were three ravens sat on a tree, Down a down hey down hey down. And they were [as] black as they might be, With a down. Then one of them said to his [make] : "Where shall we our breakfast take?" With a down derry derry derry down down. Down in yonder greenfield, There lies a knight slain under his shield; His hounds they lie down at his feet, So well they can their master keep. His hawks they fly so eagerly, There is no fowl dare [come him] nigh [But] down there comes a fallow doe, As great with young as she might go. [O she lifts] up his bloody head, And kissed his wounds that were so red. She got him up upon her back And carried him to [an] earthen lake. She buried him before the prime, She was dead herself ere evensong time. [Now] God send every gentleman Such [hounds, such hawks] and such a leman

A few years ago we were invited to take part in a weekend festival in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where the School of Music at Salem College was hosting a festival honoring the memory of Percy Grainger. Participants included Frederick Fennell, founder and former director of the Eastman School of Music Wind Ensemble, a longtime popularizer of Grainger1s compositions; Stewart Manville, archivist of the Percy Grainger Library in White Plains, New York; Nigel Coxe, a concert pianist with an all-Grainger recording among his credits; and Barbara Lister-Sink, also a pianist, and Dean of the Salem College School of Music. Our role was to present a program of some of the folksongs Grainger collected in England during the early 1900s, many of which he subsequently used in his own arrangements and compositions. This recording is an extension of that project. Grainger espoused the cause of English folksong with his characteristic energetic enthusiasm. Along with Frank Kidson and Lucy Broadwood, both folksong collectors and stalwarts of the Folk Song Society, he attended the North Lincolnshire Musical Competition Festival of 1905 in the market town of Brigg. Among the events was a folksong competition won by Joseph Taylor, who was to become the best of Grainger's source singers. Grainger noted a number of songs in Brigg, some of which were published in the next issue of the

Upon entering the Percy Grainger Museum in Melbourne, visitors are enveloped by one of the few autobiographical museums in the world, created, built and provided for by Grainger and a number of fellow travelers. Mysterious and challenging, the architecture of this small building is more akin to a laboratory or safe-house for the serious and open-minded visitor=BEwhich Grainger was sure would exist some time in the future. Of extraordinary musicological and cultural value, the collection has accrued additional meaning because it was collected by Grainger on the basis of his highly idiosyncratic views on life, art and the composer.

"What we do hear is detailed, very well recorded on a modern concert grand, and stylistically fascinating. It shows Grainger to have been a highly unorthodox pianist - wild and renegade in his attitudes to conventional keyboard decorum, chopping and lurching his way with spontaneity from phrase to phrase, and priapically rhythmic in almost everything he played. The results are invigorating ... These unique Nimbus reconstructions of the Grainger sound make most other performances of his music I have heard sound misguidedly conventional and tame. Controversial the piano rolls themselves may be: to my ears the sound that they produce is very much that of the real beast." Terry Blain, Classic CD
