    http://www.netcomuk.co.uk/~ugm/thalia/spectrum.htm
In 1995, in response to the dearth of serious contemporary music playable by good amateur and student pianists, Thalia Myers commissioned the first of the enormously successful, award-winning Spectrum anthologies. Published by ABRSM (Publishing) Limited in 1996 and followed by Spectrum 2 (1999) and Spectrum 3 (2001), these seventy-five pieces in three volumes have been set for competitions and examinations, used as reference works by professors of composition and entered the repertoire of student, amateur and professional pianists around the world. Thalia Myers has recorded CDs of Spectrum and Spectrum 2 on NMC DO57 and Spectrum 3 on MET CD 1053. 'Thalia Myers has done a service to young or amateur pianists and to British composers in commissioning these short pieces whose level of difficulty is not prohibitive, but whose artistic seriousness is manifest.' [Sunday Times] '... as good a snapshot of the contemporary international musical scene at the start of the millennium as it is possible to conceive ... a brilliant original idea reaching new heights of excellence with each release.' [Piano] '... a compilation of exquisite miniatures'

The Gumberg Library is pleased to announce completion of the Dena Ferguson Jacobson Chamber Music Collection. Through the generosity of the family and friends of former Duquesne University librarian Dena Jacobson, over 450 CDs and 230 scores were purchased for the Library's chamber music collection. This endeavor fulfills several goals of the Duquesne community: strengthening the Library's chamber music collection, as recommended by the National Association of Schools of Music, the establishment of a memorial for Dena by the Jacobson family, and the provision of edifying materials for students at Duquesne University. We are honored to fulfill these goals through the Dena Ferguson Jacobson Chamber Music Collection. The CD selections assemble a solid, diverse representation of chamber music. The foundation consists of different performances of standard repertoire. Mozart, Dvorak, and Schubert are performed by luminaries such as the Juilliard and Tokyo Quartets and soli including Gideon Kremer and Yo-Yo Ma. Interpretations range from traditional to cutting edge, covering historic performances and recent interpretations. One can compare Nathan Milstein's 1953 recital to Nigel Kennedy's offering in 2000, or choose one of 23 CDs of Beethoven string quartets. From piano trios to woodwind octets, chamber music essentials are found in the Dena Jacobson collection.

This year's artistic theme covers physiological, social and philosophic aspects of human perception of the world. Each aspect represent changing 'visions': society - by social ones (insights, vegetation, transformation); communication - by psychological ones (shifts, playing off, sound-scapes); aggregates - by physiological ones (voice of noise, sound-scapes, mobilis); integration - by philosophic ones (irradiation-radiation, four seasons, farewell to dolls). Again the festival has exotic unit - traditional art of Mongols, Inuit. Japanese farewell dolls acquire a modern interpretation. Again particular attention is paid to European musicians of highest rank, to theatrical action and synthetic art forms.
