COMPOSERS Haflidi Hallgrímsson
Haflidi Hallgrímsson
b. One of the most important figures in this flowering of Icelandic music is Haflidi Hallgrímsson, born in 1941 in the small town of Akureyri on the north coast of Iceland. He began playing the cello at the age of ten and studied in Reykjavik and at the Accademia Santa Cecilia in Rome. On returning from Rome, he continued his studies in London with Derek Simpson at the Royal Academy of Music and was awarded the coveted Madame Suggia Prize in 1966. The following year he began compositional studies with Dr Alan Bush and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. On leaving the Academy, he remained in Britain, eventually making his home in Scotland on being appointed Principal Cellist with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.
Recently there have been two commissions from the Northlands Festival in Scotland which have demonstrated Hallgrímsson's growing interest in music theatre. 'Mini-Stories' (1997) for narrator and ensemble sets translated texts by the Russian absurdist Daniil Kharms, and since its premiere has been taken up by the Caput Ensemble and the Hebrides Ensemble. Its deft evocation of a unique world of humour, nonsense and melancholy has been widely acclaimed by audiences and critics. In 1998 he wrote 'Ears Stretch a Sensitive Sail' which was premiered by Evelyn Glennie and the Yggdrasil Quartet.

'Ombra', my viola concerto, consists of several sections linked together to form a large, one movement design, lasting 18-20 minutes. The solo part is in essence a long and endlessly varied narrative. It starts on its long journey, which embraces the full technical vocabulary of the instrument, to arrive at last quietly, in the extreme high register, at the end of the concerto.
After a thoughtful and rhapsodic opening, the soloist enters with an extended and virtuosic cadenza, with the orchestra becoming fully involved in restless and harmonically dense scale passages. A slow meditative passage follows, with the viola singing and whistling high harmonics, leading to a section of fast and furious double stops, showing the more masculine side of the instrument, and moving inexorably to the main climax of the work and a quiet extended coda.
The orchestra for the most part plays a subsidiary role, providing a constantly shifting "harmonic scenery", often dense and divided into many individual parts, which always aims at enhancing the poetic and dramatic nature of the solo part.

Not so crazy after all these years
This weekend, she is the subject of a profile by the South Bank Show. Disarming, charming, clad in a Chinese dress and a homespun cardi, she is seen recording her new album Homogenic ("maybe it's Homogenious - I'm not quite sure of its name ...") in a Spanish castello with a crew of wonderfully misplaced Icelandic fiddlers. She wants, she says, to capture "the sounds of now", to somehow paint portraits of her present life and relationships. The result is dark and not entirely friendly; despite the sun and sangria, her music, raw and frozen still burns through. She is seen on the beach in clothes which might suggest a recent release from Alcatraz, in her front room discussing Stockhausen - she and the mad bad boy of classical electronic tantrums share certain views about banishing the old, embracing the new and surprising. Yet she seems both ordinary and exotic, a misfit among the trappings of her celebrity, a sociable soul most at home at the edge of the world. For more than anything, her music howls the landscape of her native land, to which, after four years in London, she has returned. A month after the Nordic Prize, she was awarded the Knights Cross medal of honour - the equivalent of a knighthood - by the President of Iceland, Olafur Ragnar Grimmsson.

RE: NAF 2001 and other news Hello from a sunny and warm Prince Edward Island, on this, my last day of work before holidays. I'll be back in the office Aug. 6, so if anyone has anything urgent, please e-mail Harry or Jane ( baglole@upei.ca or jledwell@upei.ca Here are three items of interest: 1. You may have heard of Icelandair's decision to stop flying into Halifax. Below is a note from Harry on this topic. 2. You may remember that a recent NAIP report included a message from a Tasmanian student, Alice Ashbolt, about a proposed international youth conference on the topic of island identity. Harry had intended to write a note calling your attention to this but failed to do so. I will repeat Alice's posting now. Harry notes: "I shall simply say that I met Alice and two colleagues while I was in Tasmania in April. I'm very impressed with this proposed initiative both the concept and the ability of these students to do something important. If you know of individuals or islands who/which may be interested, please pass the information along; and urge interested parties to reply to Alice."
