Save around 22% with Crotchet This is Volume 3 in Danacord's original and auspicious series of Harmonious families, this time the focus is on the Hamerik team. Ebbe Hamerik is more famous as a conductor and his early death robbed Denmark out of one of its finest and most sensitive masters of the rostrum. Apparently he was also a gifted creative artist as the short Oboe Concerto shows. Employing modernist and traditionalist tendencies Nielsen's more famously controversial work is occasionally recalled but is very much its own master. It receives a spirited performance from Jorgen Frederiksen and the Danish Orchestra with Moshe Atzmon a believable accompanist. The cantus Firmus is even more enterprising although it is conspicuously harder to understand especially in the frenetic concluding Presto that makes up the final part of the work which, in its savagery, reminds one of a Northern landscape Asger Hamerik's music is altogether more accessible. I was particularly taken with the expansive breadth and beauty of the Jewish Trilogy with a substantial Overture and a rhetorically bombastic '

But that, surely, is one of the joys of our lifelong journey of musical discovery. Listen to this disc - at least twice. Ask yourself -'Does this music deserve obscurity?' 'Is it less deserving of note than a thousand works by better known composers?' Let's take a brief look at the Hameriks and their music.

Arthur Friedheim Library - Celebrating the Past, Anticipating the Future An exhibition celebrating one of America's oldest music libraries will open on Friday, October 4 at 6 p.m. The exhibition honors the memory of Eric Friedheim, whose $2 million gift in 1990, designated the library as the Arthur Friedheim Library, in honor of his father, the legendary Russian pianist. The Arthur Friedheim Library can, however, trace its beginnings to a gift that arrived just before Christmas in 1861, soon after the outbreak of the Civil War and a full five years before the Peabody Conservatory could open its doors. The gift was the manuscript of Nebuchadnezzer believed to be the first American Oratorio. It was presented by the composer, Brigadier General James Monroe Deems. From 1866, when Peabody finally celebrated the dedication of its main building at One East Mount Vernon, until 1868, the library served the musicians performing on the fledgling Academy of Music's modest but enormously popular concert series directed by Deems. Soon after, the arrival of the first entering class in the autumn of 1868 prompted the acquisition of "a large quantity of music for the use of the professors" and the Peabody Orchestra. This established the music library as a separate entity from the Peabody scholar's library (now called the George Peabody Library).
