Overview Recordings Scores - Books - Links Born: December 20, 1938, Orange, New Jersey, USA John Harbison has written wondrously for winds, brass, and percussion in his orchestral scores, so it was a great delight when he started writing for wind ensemble and band. Three City Blocks is my favorite of these three works. Along with Benson's Dawn's Early Light , it is one of the rare classical pieces that fuses jazz and pop elements into a classical framework in an artistic and compelling way. Harbison's synthesis is even more subtle than Benson's, save for the menacing pop elements at the close of the first movement. Both Corporon and Battisti do a fine job, but I'd go with Battisti if I had to choose just one performance. Coupled with the Music for 18 Winds (and Colgrass's Arctic Dreams ), it provides the best introduction to Harbison's wind music.

John Harbison Photo: Katrin Talbot John Harbison is one of America's most prominent composers. Among his principal works are four string quartets, three symphonies, the cantata The Flight Into Egypt which earned him a Pulitzer Prize in 1987, and three operas, including The Great Gatsby , commissioned by The Metropolitan Opera and premiered to great acclaim in December 1999. Harbison's music is distinguished by its exceptional resourcefulness and expressive range. He has written for every conceivable type of concert performance, ranging from the grandest to the most intimate, pieces that embrace jazz along with the pre-classical forms. He is considered to be "original, varied, and absorbingrelatively easy for audiences to grasp and yet formal and complex enough to hold our interest through repeated hearingshis style boasts both lucidity and logic" ( Fanfare 1993). Harbison is also a gifted commentator on the art and craft of composition and was recognized in his student years as an outstanding poet (he wrote his own libretto for Gatsby ). Today, he continues to convey, through the spoken word, the multiple meanings of contemporary composition.

Biography.
http://www.madisonmusicreview.org/doc/p_199608_harbison.html
John Harbison, Composer
If you drive along Highway 19 just east of U.S. 51, you might notice a lovely pond and a grove of trees without suspecting that just behind the trees lives one of America's best-known composers, John Harbison. This is Harbison's summer home, a rural Shangri-La where he does most of his composing and where he and his wife, violinist Rose Mary Harbison, sponsor the Token Creek Chamber Music Festival each summer (see sidebar). A conversation with the relaxed and affable Harbisons on a delightfully fresh Saturday morning touched on a wide range of topics, from the nature of art and performance to fresh approaches in realizing classical scores, from the scarcity of audiences that might fully comprehend the composer's intention to the intricacies musicians face in performing new music, from the self-promoting scramble of today's students and young artists to a more serious and insightful tendency that seems to be emerging among the newest generation of musicians. The Harbisons are penetratingly intelligent and insightful about art and the creative process, and are concerned that serious music is being undermined by our contemporary culture's focus on fame, surface appearances, and competitive values. "Great art is a phenomenon of conflict, a collision of sensibilities," John Harbison says. "Performing grapples with reality!" Rose Mary quickly adds. This grappling has long occupied the Harbisons as a central creative element. For the composer, it is the challenge of bringing together into a unified whole a large array of intentions, derived from such disparate sources as the music of the past, contemporary poetry, the pyschological and emotional content of one's own life experiences, and always the search for deeper meanings. For the performer, it is the struggle to master the instrument, to reach into the musical materials and cut away everything that is not essential, like mere virtuosity and the desire for critical acclaim.

John Harbison - Composer Essay
updated 16 October 1997
(an index of works mentioned in this essay appears at the end) David St. George
Violin Concerto with Rose Mary Harbison, at Tanglewood the summer of 1992, was ear-opening and unforgettable. Since 1969 he has been professor of music at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where undergraduate students profit from his broad range of musical sympathies together with his rigorous technical exactitude. That is, the students seem to learn from him how to compose what they want to compose, but with the greatest possible precision. Harbison does most of his composing during the summer, when he is free of his teaching commitments, on a farm in Wisconsin. There he can enjoy a solitude that is not available to him elsewhere, for Harbison lives his life at the farthest possible remove from that of the ivory tower composer. Moreover, despite his very high profile and international celebrity, his day-to-day life is in the heart of Boston's musical community, where he has lived and worked for the past 30 years. His energy, knowledge, sureness of judgement and human understanding have affected the entire musical life of the city in which he lives. The famed Handel and Haydn Society experienced one of its most artistically satisfying events in years when they invited him to conduct a series of Messiah performances in December 1993; his activities on behalf of Emmanuel Music, located at Emmanuel Church in Boston, sometimes as conductor, sometimes as composer, sometimes as organizer, always as inspirer, have helped make Emmanuel one of the most consistently exciting places for a music-lover to be in Boston. His connections with the Boston Symphony Orchestra go back to 1976, the year they premiered
