JOHN HARBISON Composer John Harbison is one of America's most prominent composers. Among his principal works are three string quartets, three symphonies, two operas ("A Winter's Tale" and "A Full Moon in March"), and the cantata "The Flight Into Egypt," which earned him a Pulitzer Prize in 1987. His third opera "The Great Gatsby" was commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera, and receives its world premiere at the Metropolitan Opera House on December 20, 1999. Harbison's newest work, "Four Psalms," commissioned by the Israeli Consulate of Chicago and composed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the State of Israel, receives its premiere when it is performed by the Chicago Symphony in April 1999. Other projects include "Olympic Dances," written for the National Band Directors Association and choreographed by Pilobolus; a Flute Concerto for the American Composers Orchestra, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and the Oregon Symphony; a Sonata for Saxophone and Piano, commissioned by 100 saxophonists; "Emerson," a choral work written for the centennial of the University of Wisconsin; and "Flashes and Dedications," a song cycle for Sanford Sylvan. As conductor, Harbison has led a number of distinguished orchestras and chamber groups. From 1990 to 1992 he was Creative Chair with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, conducting music from Monteverdi to that of the present. John Harbison (1938-) Concerto for Oboe, Clarinet, and Strings By John Harbison. When I was asked to write a piece for a large consortium of ensembles, the initial discussions were with oboist Sarah Bloom and clarinetist David Shifrin. Out of this conjunction the present concerto arose. Sarah Bloom was entrusted with the premiere of the piece in its orchestral guise, at the New College Music Festival in Sarasota, Florida, and David Shifrin with the single instrument version, at Chamber Music Northwest in Portland, Oregon. The initial performers of the orchestral parts were students, and subsequent performances have used student soloists as well: this was part of my intention for the piece. The oboe, clarinet, and strings are equal partners. The first movement is declamatory, the second contemplative, and the last frenetic. Each movement sustains one affect, in the Baroque manner, and it was one of my pleasures to introduce the clarinet, born too late for the heyday of the concerto grosso, into that texture. The steady insistent rhythms are indeed baroque, the harmonies less so. I am particularly fond of the high rhythmic dudgeon maintained in the outer movements, but it is balanced by the traceries of the middle movement, which joins the last through a cadenza-like transition.

I See Dead People II Dr. John Harbison My arrival in the Burke Theatre was typically haphazard and considerably late. I missed Dr. Whittaker's talk, stumbling in during the appreciative applause, and found some floor to sit on while the bearded Dr. Harbison fumbled with his slides. Here in Ireland, John Harbison is something of a celebrity. With less than four million inhabitants in the republic, one state pathologist was, for many years, more than enough. Everyone in the country is used to news footage of the tweedy doctor, along with the words '...the State Pathologist, Dr. John Harbison, arrived at the scene to carry out a post- mortem examination...' In recent years, Harbison's workload has doubled. This may be less to do with any sudden increase in murder than an altered definition of a 'suspicious' death. However, Harbison reserved commentary on any change in the murder rate, instead respecting professional demarcation by referring us to the country's statisticians. While he used to examine some 100 bodies every year, Harbison now looks at around 200, along with Dr. Marie Cassidy, who was appointed Assistant State Pathologist in 1997. Harbison's talk was less of a detailed lecture, and more of a cosy wander through his 'what I did when I certainly was not on my holidays' slides. At the beginning, he explained that due to size of Ireland's population, the danger of offending someone with his slides was significant. Some years ago, he was tutoring newly recruited gardai on how best to preserve a crime scene. The slides showed a murder case. a woman who had been killed in a forest. All that was found were some teeth and bones. Afterwards, he was approached by a young garda who asked if Harbison could refrain from using them again. The murder victim was the policeman's mother.

But the era into which Mr. Harbison was born has not been a welcoming one for American opera composers. In fact, only one of his three operas was written in response to an invitation; The Great Gatsby , after F. By JONATHAN RICHMOND HARBISON'S VIOLIN CONCERTO is a remarkable work, bursting with energy and imagination, so it was quite appropriate that his virtuoso violinist wife Rose Mary should provide a fiery but also intensely lyrical performance of it in celebration of her husband's 50th birthday. The concerto might be described as a song in three movements, and Rose Mary Harbison elicited vocal qualities from her violin, drawing contrasted shades of darkness, but singing elatedly as well. It was a display that was inescapably gripping; one which established this as one of the most important concerto compositions of recent years. The elaborate opening to the third movement was very beautifully played, torment emerging from below the surface to ravishing effect. This is emotionally complex and at times troubling music; yet it emerged with a smile, as if sent by Mozart, transcribed by Mahler, but endowed with the special originality of John Harbison. Rhythms are at times powerful, and they help propel the concerto forward. They were well developed and displayed during this performance. The music, then, was made to operate on several levels, both physical and spiritual. If rhythm paints pictures of the outer, human world, and lyricism is the vital means of conveying emotion, then the inner structure of the music itself its changing dynamics and contrasted colors and tempi transmit a message which is profoundly spiritual.

Though there are several classic recordings of Verdi's miraculous final opera, this new one takes its place among the best. Mr. Abbado elicits a bustling and transparent performance, and Mr. Terfel owns the title role. The entire cast is superb, especially Dorothea Roschmann as Nanetta and Mr. Hampson as Ford. 2. EARL KIM: VOCAL WORKS Benita Valente and Karol Bennett, sopranos; Metamorphosen Chamber Ensemble, directed by Scott Yoo (New World). Here is an entrancing program of works for voice, narrator and chamber ensemble by Kim, the California-born composer of Korean heritage, who died in 1998. He was a gentle genius whose aesthetic valued precision, lucidity and the beauty of a single sound. Ms. Valente and Ms. Bennett are superb. 3. GLUCK: ITALIAN ARIAS Cecilia Bartoli, mezzo-soprano; Akademie fur Alte Musik Berlin, directed by Bernhard Forck (Decca). Working with the excellent Berlin Academy for Old Music, Ms. Bartoli offers a revelatory program of little-known arias from Gluck's early period (titled ``Dreams and Fables''), all to librettos of Metastasio.
