Lou Harrison Works List Discography Essay Lou Harrison has been remarkably successful at capturing the "whole round world" of music, from exploring the infinite variations of East/West synthesis to plumbing the lyrical possibilities of serialism. Though "exotic" and "eclectic" may be used to describe the wonderful instrumental colors and tunings Harrison employs, at the center of his "world" is a firm belief in music's simplest and most universal elements. Whatever the chosen idiom, Harrison's music speaks powerfully to the heart.
Lou Harrison has been with Peermusic Classical since the 1950s, and we are proud to be the principal publisher of his music. Follow the links to the left to read more about this pioneering composer, or to view his works list.

performed by Joanna MacGregor. After studying composition with Cowell in San Francisco and Schoenberg in Los Angeles in the I930s, Lou Harrison worked as a music copyist, florist, record clerk, poet, dancer and dance critic in the 1940S, moving to New York in 1943. Here he became a music critic for The Herald Tribune , edited Cowell's New Music Edition and conducted the first performance of Ives's Third Symphony. Returning to California, he taught on the music faculty of Black Mountain College from 1951-3, and has since held posts at several American universities. Harrison's music, such as La Koro Sutro for chorus and gamelan, embraces the huge variety of musical cultures bordering the Pacific. Inspired by the work of Harry Partch and his interest in non-Western tuning systems, he has, with his companion William Colvig, constructed a range of instruments including several gamelans , wind and string instruments. Essentially a melodist, Lou Harrison is often regarded as the father of West Coast new music. I'd like to start by asking you about living and composing on the West Coast of America as opposed to the East. What are the differences between the two, and why have you chosen the West?

February 04, 2003 Lou Harrison Lou Harrison, an important American composer, who was a sweet gay artist and activist, has died at 85 . I had the honor of meeting him and his lover a few years ago. There are few people one meets that give one the feeling of gentle saintliness. I felt that way when I met him, and I felt that way when I met Paul Cadmus. TrackBack

Harrison Highlights
  • Upon arriving in San Francisco in 1934, Lou quickly embarked on a tireless career of music, dance, art, calligraphy, poetry...and, of course, composing. Enrolling in Henry Cowell's class "Music of the Peoples of the World", Lou began a deep association with that composer which is still evident in his music and words.
  • Correspondence from the 30's indicates a sort of tug-of-war between Lou's interest in music and poetry which was thankfully resolved in his scripting of lyric and his work with many writers and poets such as Elsa Gidlow, James Broughton, Robert Gordon and Jonathan Williams.
  • It was through Henry Cowell that Lou first met John Cage and together they produced many percussion concerts and music for dance concerts. Under the suggestion of Cowell, Lou and John foraged for different sound making "instruments" and began utilizing flower pots, brake drums, tin sheets, and metal pipes. Lou began teaching at Mills College in 1936 and continued to write for dance programs, plays, and ballets. In 1943 he traveled to Los Angeles where he worked as a dance accompanist as well as teaching Laban dance notation. It was here that Lou had the opportunity to study with Arnold Schoenberg.
