Lou Harrison in Conversation with John Luther Adams (4/99) John Luther Adams sits down, in Alaska, to visit by telephone with Lou Harrison, in California. 1. Overture JLA: In a mesostic written in your honor, John Cage compared your music to a river opening into its delta. He wrote: "Listening to it, we become ocean." I think John was right, your music is absolutely extraordinary for its breadth, its diversity, its sheer quantity, and its constantly exquisite quality. You're an american master with a remarkable body of work. Last year, your 80th birthday was celebrated with performances all over the world. Some major new pieces, including the Pi'pa Concerto, were premiered. Moving into your ninth decade, you're still going strong! LH: Yes, and we just had two more performances of the concerto. One in Seattle, and one with the California Symphony , in the Bay region. There were 2 different virtuosi, and they both went very well. You know I'm a slowpoke I have a difficult time with things like bowing, metronome marks, and all sorts of decisions. Fortunately, most musicians are kind to me and help, which is a good thing. JLA: Well, the collaborative relationship with performers is part of the fun, isn't it?

http://www.newmusicbox.org/archive/firstperson/harrison/bio.html
Lou Harrison Biography Lou Harrison 's life has been a series of archeological digs. Whenever and wherever he encountered a site of interest on the artistic landscape, he paused for an exploration. The result is more than the simple acquisition of knowledge, however, for Harrison has always found ways of combining his disparate investigations into new untried syntheses. "There is nothing labored about all this," noted Virgil Thomson in 1987. "Lou Harrison is not making plastic roses for funeral parlors. He is simply speaking in many personae and many languages. The message itself is pure Harrison. And that message is of joy, dazzling and serene, and even at its most intensely serious, not without laughter." Harrison's mentor, Henry Cowell, cautioned us to respect hybrids. Harrison would go further, urging us to celebrate them because there really is nothing else. Harrison was born in Portland, Oregon in 1917, but spent most of his formative years in northern California, where his family moved when he was nine. (The Harrisons moved nearly every year- and sometimes even more frequently-from one town to another: Woodland, Sacramento, Stockton, Berkeley, San Francisco, Los Gatos, Redwood City, Belmont, and Burlingame.) Indeed Harrison has been cited as the quintessential West-coast composer, reflecting in his work the region's em-brace of diverse opinions, its fascination with Asia and Latin America, and its devotion to open space. Harrison's musical style was shaped by the San Francisco of the 1930s. There he studied composition with Henry Cowell; accompanied such dancer/choreographers as Carol Beals, Bonnie Bird, Tina Flade, and Lester Horton; and staged high profile percussion concerts with John Cage. At the Golden Gate Exposition on Treasure Island in 1939 he first heard a live Indonesian gamelan orchestra (an ensemble composed primarily of percussion, including metallophones with various types of resonators, and gongs of various sizes, shapes, and orientations). In the city itself he frequented the Chinese opera, which welcomed audiences for 25 cents a show. He and Cage delighted in rummaging through the city's automobile junkyards and import stores for anything that would ping, bong, or twang, and spent hours testing the pitch and resonance of flower pots in the local nurseries.

Lou Harrison lived his first nine years in Portland, Oregon, where he was born in May 14, 1917. Residences since then include Central California, Los Angeles, New York City (ten years), North Carolina, the San Francisco Bay region, Oaxaca, New Zealand, and the Monterey Bay region where he lives now. His studies were with Howard Cooper, Henry Cowell, Arnold Schoenberg, and Virgil Thomson. He is the recipient of several grants and awards, including Guggenheim and Rockefeller Fellowships. Mr. Harrison has established himself as one of the most original and important American composers of the 20th century.
As Mr. Harrison likes to point out, American composers must often do other things to support themselves. Among these he has been a record salesman, an animal nurse, a journalist, a florist, a forestry firefighter, and dance accompanist. He is a poet, painter, calligrapher, and type face designer in addition to being a composer. He has helped to introduce the Indonesian gamelan to the United States and, with William Colvig, has constructed two large gamelans now in use at San Jose State University and Mills College.
Ned Rorem has said, "Lou Harrison's compositions demonstrate a variety of means and techniques. In general he is a melodist. Rhythm has a significant place in his work, too. Harmony is unimportant, although tonality is. He is one of the first American composers to successfully create a workable marriage between Eastern and Western forms."

Sydney Symphony Orchestra For fifty years, Lou Harrison has been one of the most innovative and imaginative of American composers. Before the concept of 'multiculturalism' permeated popular culture, Harrison was successfully integrating Western and Asian musical forms, writing lyrical works influenced by Beijing Opera, Gregorian chant and Indonesian Gamelan Music. Born in Portland, Oregon on 14 May 1917, Lou Harrison grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. At the same time as studying with Henry Cowell, Virgil Thomson and Arnold Schoenberg, his early partnership with John Cage produced a wealth of inventive percussion music, fashioning instruments out of old brake drums and oxygen tanks. With William Colvig he has constructed two large Gamelans, and over the decades he has maintained an interest in dance, theatre and the craft of instrument building. His oeuvre includes solo, chamber, choral and orchestral works - although Lou also likes to point out that apart from being a composer, he has been a painter, a calligrapher, an animal nurse, a dance accompanist, a forestry firefighter and a poet. Meeting Lou Harrison for the first time in the summer of 1996, I was struck by his warmth and good humour, as well as his generosity and tolerance, which is not surprising, I suppose, given his life-long commitment to Buddhism. From the moment I first worked on this piece with Lou at Dartington Summer School I became entranced. It's a work which somehow obeys all the rules of a piano concerto while simultaneously defying expectation; a piece which manages to encompass a Western art form within a much bigger canvas.

Lou Harrison and the American Gamelan. Author/s: Leta E. Miller, Fredric Lieberman Issue: Summer, 1999 Since the inception of the first Indonesian music performance program in the United States in the 1950s, the number of gamelan in America has mushroomed. A gamelanthe word translates roughly as "orchestra"is an ensemble comprising primarily pitched percussion. The main instruments of the ensemble are keyed metallophones with trough or tubular resonators, and knobbed gongs, some of which are suspended and some of which are laid horizontally on rope supports. The suspended gongs function in traditional compositions as colotomic markers delineating major structural points in the musical composition; the horizontal gongs traditionally serve a melodic function.(1) At the same time, American composersmany, though by no means all, with roots in the West Coasthave begun to create a new repertory of works designed specifically for the gamelan. During the past two decades, composers throughout the United States and Canada have contributed to a growing repertory of works that call for the Indonesian ensemble alone or in consort with Western instrumental resources.(5)
