Entertainment Sunday, Mar 23, 2003 Music Posted on Tue, Feb. 04, 2003 Musical master of diversity dies at 85, was unifying force MIXED STYLES, SPANNED CLASSICAL, COUNTERCULTURE By Richard Scheinin Mercury News Lou Harrison, the Aptos-based composer who championed Asian musical techniques in the Western concert hall and made the case for ``diversity'' before most people knew the term, died Sunday at the age of 85. A versatile force in the music world for more than half a century, Harrison lived in the Santa Cruz hills, a ponytailed countercultural guru who came to be embraced by the international musical establishment. He wrote gracefully for the most unlikely instrumental combinations, including Western orchestra, Indonesian gamelan, or percussion instruments that he built from sawed-off oxygen tanks. His music was performed by little-known avant-garde ensembles as well as Yo-Yo Ma, and was championed by the conductors Dennis Russell Davies and Michael Tilson Thomas, the musical director of the San Francisco Symphony. The breadth of Harrison's musical experiences are stunning: He studied traditional composition with Arnold Schoenberg and collaborated on outrageous percussion pieces with his friend John Cage.

  • Harrison spent his youth in San Francisco studying composition with experimental composer and new music advocate Henry Cowell, and is thus indebted to an experimental strain of American composition that has had a strong Californian contingent. It was through Cowell that Harrison made the acquaintance of composer John Cage. The two became friends and musical collaborators, composing Double Music New York Herald Tribune In an attempt to further rejuvenate his psyche and creative life, Harrison returned to California in 1954, settling in the very house that I had come to visit that afternoon in 1995.
  • Harrison had left his front door ajar and it swung open as I knocked on it. I heard someone call out "Come in!" and I obeyed, finding the source of the command sitting at a table hidden by a heap of papers and books, one hand lifting a glass of water and the other gesticulating for me to enter. Here was Lou Harrison ( pictured th Third Symphony , the world premiere of which Harrison conducted in 1946 in New York. I wanted to ask Harrison about his involvement with Ives’s music, about his relationship with Ives, and what lessons he had taken from him. In the course of our conversation, though, questions regarding Harrison’s own compositional processes came to the foreground, and I became intrigued by how Harrison conceptualized and communicated his relationship with non-western musics. Did his engagement with Asian musical traditions constitute a type of orientalism, or colonialism of "other" musical practices? And what, if any, was the relationship between this appropriation of non-western musical identities with Harrison’s homosexuality?

Lou Harrison: Selected Keyboard and Chamber Music, 1937-1994
Edited by Leta E. Miller Leta E. Miller and Lou Harrison "It was Mozart's boast that he could master any composer's musical style within a week and by the end of that time compose in it adeptly enough to deceive experts. Lou Harrison has something of that virtuosity himself," wrote Virgil Thomson in 1981. But "Harrison is not making plastic roses for funeral parlors. He is simply speaking in many personae and many languages. The message itself is pure Harrison. And that message is of joy, dazzling and serene and even at its most intensely serious not without laughter" (Virgil Thomson, "The World of Lou Harrison," KPFA Folio 39, no. 5 [May 1987]: 7; reprinted in Peter Garland, ed., A Lou Harrison Reader [Santa Fe: Soundings Press, 1987], 86.) Lou Harrison's ability to combine wide-ranging influences, while at the same time projecting a sense of cohesion and stylistic individuality, is the essence of his skill. He often compares the compositional process to a "delightful game," choosing from toys he has "spread out over a wide acreage" and mingling them in novel combinations. Harrison (b. 1917) accumulated these toys gradually, from sources that intrigued him at various points in his career: the music of Schoenberg, Ruggles, and Cowell; the percussion ensemble; Asian musics, especially Indonesian, Chinese, and Korean; dissonant counterpoint; just intonation; dance; the French Baroque and Medieval music, to cite the most important.

Goodnight, Daddy: Lou Harrison died last week at the age of 85. The Last Daddy A Metro Santa Cruz music critic remembers his four decades with Lou Harrison By Scott MacClelland Lou Harrison never felt entirely comfortable being a composer, and often said so. John Cage, his friend, advised him to get over it. "You were elected," Cage told him. As if to underscore his ambivalence, Harrison would occasionally be surprised to find himself the author of music he had forgotten. Listing his creative activitiescomposer, performer, dancer, calligrapher, designer, poet, scholaralmost seems like an exercise in trivial pursuit. In truth, his ambivalence was over labels, not creativity. For his many expressive vectors, Harrison distilled an organizing credo, a motto for action: "Cherish, conserve, consider, create." And despite the multitude of his creative outlets, Harrison's more than 300 distinctively original works, expressed across a vast range of styles, mark him as one of the giants of 20th-century American music. Two things have always amazed me about Harrison: first, the protean range of his creativity, and second, the capacity of audiences to "get" him. I know of no classical or avant-garde musician in California who has not been affected by Lou's music, and that's not even considering the hundreds who knew him personally and whose judgment therefore is positively less than objective. No one who knew Lou took with them anything less than an indelible impression of his magnificent personality.

Lou Harrison's Desert Retreat Joshua Tree, CA "Lou Harrison," in his own words, "is an old man who has had a lot of fun." He was composing music before most of us were born, and is lately being rediscovered as a grand old man of American music. After thirty years perched in fog and wind above the Pacific in Aptos, California, Lou has decided to build a desert retreat, a place to work on commissions, and a place to play. Fifty years ago, Lou wrote that "American music, like so much other American art, is almost completely the product of amateurs." The amateur is like a lover: "He loves something, gets hold of something, and takes a bite off." He adds, "I'm a grown-up kid. Art to me is play. Children get very serious about play. It's not frivolous-it's learning. If it's beautiful, that's a welcome bonus." Designing Lou's Studio with him has been fun and a delight. Besides composing music, Lou also writes poetry, paints, does calligraphy, sculpts and loves architecture. Lou has a great fondness for Middle Eastern architecture, and we decided to create a straw-bale home which featured a vaulted Great Room, for work and play, and three smaller domed rooms for living quarters. The building we envisioned would be all straw-bale and could be put together by friends and laborers without special skills or experience in construction. The building we created has strong, simple shapes and solid proportions. The long vault is flanked on one side by three rooms, and on the other by butresses which create shaded outdoor "rooms".

By Barbara McKenna A new book on one of America's most influential and renowned contemporary composers has just arrived in bookstores this month. The book, Lou Harrison: Composing a World (Oxford University Press, August 1998), is authored by Leta Miller and Fredric Lieberman, both professors of music. Along with the book comes an audio CD, featuring previously unrecorded works and unreleased recordings of Harrison's own performances from the 1950s, '60s, and '70s. Miller and Lieberman bring to the book both their extensive musical knowledge and their academic expertise. Additionally, the authors worked closely with Harrison in writing the book, consulting his archives and conducting extensive interviews with him and his colleagues. The result is a thorough, insightful, and compelling account of the remarkable life and music of the eminent composer. This engaging study of Harrison's life and works will be indispensable to students and scholars of American music and to performing artists and programmers. To celebrate the release of the book, Harrison will join the authors for a booksigning on Tuesday, September 15, at 7 p.m. at Bookshop Santa Cruz, 1520 Pacific Ave. For more information on the booksigning, call (831) 423-0900.

April 21, 1997 UCSC celebration of Lou Harrison's 80th birthday kicks off with inaugural lecture By Barbara McKenna Musicologist and flutist Leta Miller will present an inaugural lecture titled "Sounding Off: Lou Harrison's Musical Politics" at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, in the Music Center. The talk is part of the campuswide celebration of Harrison's 80th birthday that also includes a concert and art exhibit (see below). The lecture is free and open to the public. Miller and colleague Fredric Lieberman, both professors of music at UCSC, have just completed a book on the world-renowned composer, who is a resident of Santa Cruz County. Their book, tentatively titled "Lou Harrison: Composing a World," will be released later this year by Oxford University Press. Miller is also featured on four recordings of the music of Lou Harrison. Miller's talk draws from a chapter in the forthcoming book and will incorporate musical samples, slides, and excerpts from interviews with Harrison and his colleagues. "Lou has never separated politics from his music," Miller said. "He's written multiple compositions since the 1930s and as recently as 1991 expressing his political ideals." Miller described some of Harrison's politically oriented work, which began in the 1930s when he wrote a series of political pieces designed for modern dance. The first

APTOS, Calif.Lou Harrison, who pioneered world music and was among a line of iconoclastic 20th century American composers that included innovators such as Charles Ives and John Cage, died Sunday. He was 85. Mr. Harrison had a heart attack in Lafayette, Ind., while traveling from his home in Aptos to a weeklong celebration of his music sponsored by the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and Ohio State University. Mr. Harrison was among the first composers to create all-percussion pieces and to integrate the musical traditions and instruments of Asia and the West. His work includes four symphonies, two operas, ballets, concertos, choral pieces, solo and chamber works. But he's best known for works that cannot be readily categorized, particularly those intended for a gamut of percussion instruments. AP
