Haydn It is very difficult to make a complete statement of Haydn's compositions. With regard to many compositions it is hard to tell if they are composed by Haydn or by a different composer. Some compositions are supposed to be written by Haydn, but may not be written by the maestro at all! Every catalogue of Haydn's works is missing works or it contains too much compositions. Of course Haydn made statements by himself. These statements are important for the study of his works, but are also not complete. Haydn didn't mention every composition in his lists, he simply forgot to mention some works or he used different names for different compositions, like Sonata, Divertimento, Partita etc. Many of Haydn's compositions are destroyed during fires in Eisenstadt or the Hungarian Eszterhaza. Other compositions rest in private libraries, which we can't enter.

It is ironic that art music in the royal courts of Europe reached a peak of creative expression during the final period in which monarchs in many European countries wielded absolute power. But the Classical Period (1750-1825) was just such a time. The Classical Era was the final historical period of the "patronage system" in which musicians worked as servants to powerful noblemen. During this time three great revolutions took place: the American Revolution, the French Revolution, and the Industrial Revolution. Classical Period music was the "swan song" of autocratic powers among most European nobles, and it was the era that gave birth to the great democracies of the New World.
Some of the important historical events of this period include Benjamin Franklin's discoveries of electricity, the emergence of factories using water and steam powered machinery, Napoleon's ultimate defeat at Waterloo, the first steamship crossing of the Atlantic, the discovery of medical vaccination, and the invention of the cotton gin. At the same time these events were taking place, a music of great elegance, refinement, and beauty was being created by resident composers in the courts of European noblemen.
Musicians moved away from the heavily ornamented Baroque styles and embraced a clean, uncluttered style they thought reminiscent of Classical Greek art. Noble patrons were demanding an impersonal, but tuneful and elegant music. Dances such as the minuet and the gavotte were provided in the forms of entertaining serenades and divertimenti. At this time the Austrian capital of Vienna became the musical center of Europe, and works of the period are often referred to as being in the "Viennese style." There are those who would deny that a "Viennese School" of composers ever existed during this epoch, but it is certain that the lives of Haydn and Mozart were closely linked, both through music and through friendship in Vienna. Additionally, Haydn's influence as Beethoven's teacher for a short period is also a fact. So the existence of a "Viennese Classical style" is self-evident.

    Franz Joseph Haydn

Franz Joseph Haydn By Paul Musser paul@musica.co.uk Born 31 March, 1732 in Rohrau, Austria Died 31 May, 1809 in Vienna, Austria Through quality and quantity, Haydn and his stylish works dictated the musical direction of the entire Classical period. Born in the small town of Rohrau on the Hungarian border, Franz Joseph Haydn was the son of a local wheelwright. He received his first musical instruction at the age of five from his uncle. A talented young singer, Haydn gained the bulk of his early musical education as a member of the boy choir at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna. It was there he remained until his voice changed, forcing him to leave the choir and find employment elsewhere. Haydn made his living initially as a freelance musician and teacher, eking out an existence while studying theory and composition. He began taking lessons from Italian composer Nicola Porpora and eventually landed a job as musical director for Count Morzin. His biggest break, however, came when he entered into the service of Prince Paul Anton Ezterhazy, a wealthy and influential patron of the arts, in 1761.

    Biography
    Franz Joseph Haydn
Composer Austria Born 31 Mar 1732
    Died 31 May 1809
Joseph Haydn lived a long life and had a vast output, writing more symphonies than any other major composer. His influence on Beethoven and Mozart, with whom he made up the First Viennese (Classical) school of music, was immense, due to his perfection of the sonata form. Unlike them, he was no rebel but a cheerful, witty and well-loved servant of his noble patrons. Almost everything he composed was a masterpiece, and he took the genres of symphony and string quartet to unprecedented heights.
Joseph Haydn was born in Rohrau, Austria, in 1732. His love of music came from his father, a wheelwright, and his mother, a master-cook, both of whom were fond of singing. His earliest studies, at nearby Hainburg, were under the schoolmaster JM Frank, who was impressed by the boy's early interest in music. Haydn made rapid progress on the violin and the harpsichord, but was a mischievous child and was often flogged. His beautiful singing voice was noticed by the Vienna cathedral organist, Georg von Reutter II, who brought the young Haydn to Vienna to study at St. Stephen's cathedral choir school. Although his musical studies went well, other lessons bored him and his mischief continued. Accordingly, when his voice broke at 16, his teachers did not hesitate to use this as an excuse to throw him out. They replaced him with his brother, Michael, who was a talented student and would later become an accomplished composer. Joseph's school career continued to be troubled and he was expelled from his next school for cutting off a girl's pigtail. Left penniless, Haydn was given lodgings with a friend. There, he concentrated on teaching himself composition, raising a little money by giving music lessons.
