Franz Joseph Haydn
Along with Mozart , they were the greatest composers of the Classical Era. Haydn was born as the Baroque Era was just ending, with Handel writing his operas and massive oratorios in London, Bach in Germany composing his complex masterpieces. And by the time of his death, the world was getting ready for the Romantic Era, created by Haydn's one-time student, Ludwig van Beethoven Born in the small village of Rodrau, Austria, Franz Joseph Haydn grew up in a music-loving family (Joseph's younger brother was a well-known religious composer). When he was a young boy, he was sent to live with his father's cousin, where he learned to play the harpsichord and piano. His church choir singing voice was heard by the music director of St Stephen's Church in Vienna. Absolutely stunned, the choirmaster allowed Haydn to join the choir in Vienna, where Haydn attended church school, studying all the ordinary school subjects, in addition to his composition lessons. As he sang in the choir, Haydn used his clothing money to buy books on composition, and taught himself how to compose. However, his singing career did not last long. At seventeen, his voice broke ("He sounds like a crowing rooster," the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria remarked). Haydn, having the playful, childish attitude, performed many practical jokes on his fellow choirmates. But his last, cutting off the pigtail of another singer, was his excuse to leave the choir, thinking he had no use there with a cracked voice. But now, he was a dropout, with no money, job, or place to live.

His father loved music, putting on family concerts in which all the children participated. Early on he showed talent as a singer, and his parents sent him away at age six to receive a musical education. When he was eight he became a choirboy at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna. After a successful career there, his voice changed, and he eked out a living as a musician, playing and teaching. He slowly gained fame, finally finding success by the late 1750s. In 1761 the Esterhazy family, one the richest and most influential of the Hungarian nobility, employed Haydn. By 1766 he had full control over all the music at the Esterhazy palace (Esterhaza), writing numerous symphonies, string quartets, and sonatas, as well as other chamber music and operas. His music for the Esterhazys often shows a certain wit and lightheartedness.

FRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN
  • Member of the Classical "Viennese School"
  • Father of the Symphony; Composer of the "London" Symphonies
  • Known as "Papa" Haydn
Joseph Haydn is considered a prominent member of the Viennese Classical school and a leading composer of the 18th-century Classical period, along with composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) and Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827). Regarded as the father of the symphony , "Haydn’s career is a story of many years of hard work, steady development, and ultimate fame and fortune" (Kerman 399). Haydn's Childhood In 1732, Franz Joseph Haydn was born in Rohrau, a village of southern Austria. Haydn came from a poor family who highly valued music. His brother, Johann Michael (1737-1806), also became a composer and worked for the Archbishop of Salzburg. Though his parents did not have any formal musical training (his father made wagon wheels for a living), the family included music as a natural part of life. As a young boy, Joseph learned folksongs and peasant dances from his parents. His father also played the harp while his mother sang. The music Haydn experienced as a child in an impoverished village later played an important role in the style of his compositions. Haydn commented on his modest childhood: "Young people can see from my example that something still may come from nothing. What I am today, moreover, is the product of utmost poverty" (qtd. in Downs 199). Influencing such composers as

69. Franz Joseph Haydn Biography
A brief biogrpaphy of franz joseph haydn, who is remembered in history as the Fatherof the Symphony and an adventurer into almost every element of music.

Franz Joseph Haydn biography
Franz Joseph Haydn is best remembered for his symphonic music, honored by music historians who have dubbed him the "Father of the Symphony." That is a well-known fact. But did you know that Haydn worked his way from peasant to Kapellmeister where he lived in the house of a prince? Did you know that although Austria was his home, he traveled to London to write his most famous symphonies? Did you know that Haydn's oratorio "The Creation" grew out of his love of nature, as he was an avid hunter and fisherman? Or did you know that Haydn was mentor to a young music student by the name of Mozart? These are the lesser-known facts, the parts of Haydn's life that allow us to peek inside a great man's legacy to see what made him tick. Haydn was indeed a self-made man. Born in the small village of Rohrau, Austria, Franz Joseph Haydn was the second of twelve children. His father was a wagon maker by trade, but quite musical. On Sundays, the Haydn family often gave private concerts. Haydn's father played the harp while Haydn and his mother sang. A cousin who was a schoolmaster recognized the five-year-old boy's talent and offered to take him into his school so that he could receive musical instruction. The food portions for the children were meager and Haydn himself said that "there was more flogging than food." Still, Haydn persevered, determined even as a young boy to maximize the opportunity and learn all that he could. bodyOffer(22225) At the age of eight, Franz Joseph Haydn became a choirboy for the Viennese Cathedral. Again, the food was far less than what a growing youth needed and the choir children's treatment in general was harsh. Haydn stayed, learning all that he could about church music, until puberty changed the timbre of his voice and he was cast into the streets of Vienna with nothing more than a change of clothes. At the age of seventeen, Haydn found lodging and work. He gave music lessons and played in the serenades to earn money. An open door presented itself in the form of an Italian composer named Niccolo Porpora who hired Haydn as his accompanist. Haydn's status was that of a servant, but Porpora did adequately feed him - something he had not enjoyed at the school or the Cathedral - and taught him Italian, voice, and composition. Again, a positive-minded Haydn saw it as an opportunity.

Haydn, Franz Joseph
Mai 1809 in Wien. Opern

    Franz Joseph Haydn
with Jan Swafford Performance Today commentator Jan Swafford refers to Haydn as a "quiet revolutionary"an unassuming man whose genius never overcame his geniality. Haydn is often referred to as the father of the string quartet and the symphony. Though he didn't invent them, his mastery of these previously undeveloped forms set the standards by which all later efforts have been measured. Haydn's Baroque predecessors usually concentrated on a single emotion and set of themes. As a seminal composer of the Classical Era, Haydn was a pioneer of contrast and changing moods within a composition. His movements captured a wide variety of human emotionsjoy and laughter, sadness or angerenabling him to create a narrative resembling true human experience.

    (Franz) Joseph Haydn
Austrian composer. He was one of six children born to Mathias Haydn (a wheelwright and civil servant) and Anna Maria Koller in Lower Austria. His parents, wanting to prepare him for the priesthood, sent him in 1738 to a church school in nearby Haitiburg. There Haydn took his first formal instruction in music. When Georg Reutter, the newly installed music director at St. Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna, came recruiting, the young Haydn was recommended for the choir. Upon reaching the choir's minimum age of eight, Haydn was invited to Vienna.
At St. Stephen's Haydn received instruction in voice, violin, and keyboard, but little general education except for a smattering of Latin. In 1745 he was joined there by his brother Michael , and almost immediately the gifted younger sibling assumed the elder's position as soloist. Passing out of the limelight probably encouraged Haydn in his natural bent for composition, but he received little help: Reutter, himself a professional composer, gave the youngster only two lessons. As Haydn's voice changed, his position as a chorister became increasingly untenable. In late 1749 he was dismissed peremptorily over a practical joke.
Taking an attic room next door to St. Michael's Church, he made ends meet by giving violin and keyboard lessons, working as a free-lance musician in churches, and performing in (and sometimes composing for) groups playing the open-air evening serenades so popular in Vienna. At the same time he began an intensive study of counterpoint (using the writings of
