(Anthony Philip) Heinrich The Tower of Babel, or Language Confounded, Sinfonia Canonicale Heinrich (1781-1861) wrote three orchestral versions of the Tower of Babel, creating a musical depiction of the tower's construction and a huge canon that describes the confounding of language. Heinrich was born a wealthy businessman in Bohemia (now the Czech Republic) but became a musician after losing his fortune; he spent the remainder of his life living all over Europe and the United States (Philadelphia, Kentucky, Boston, New York, London, Prague, etc.) He was well known during his lifetime but faded into obscurity after his death, but there has been something of a revival of interest in him in the last 30 years. 3rd Tower of Babel:

  • Composed in New York, 1843; revised in 1852.

GERMAN IMMIGRANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO AMERICAN MUSIC 1. Key personalities Anthony Philip Heinrich (1781-1861). Born in Bohemia, he immigrated to the U.S. after the collapse of a family business in 1813. He began his career in America as a conductor and violinist, but later turned to composition. After settling in Kentucky he became a local celebrity and was known as the "Beethoven of Louisville." Although his work cannot be taken with complete seriousness, it is nonetheless an interesting bit of Americana from the Victorian era. Leopold Damrosch (1832-1885). German-born conductor of the New York Symphony and the Metropolitan Opera. For several years he ran the Metropolitan Opera virtually as a German opera company, engaging musicians and performers from opera houses in Germany. His son, Walter Damrosch (1862-1950) succeeded him at the Metropolitan and presented the first U.S. performance of Wagner's Parzifal in 1896. Theodore Thomas (1835-1905). German-born conductor in New York and Chicago, Thomas was one of the most influential American conductors of his time. Bruno Walter (1876-1962). German-born conductor, important in popularizing the works of Gustav Mahler in America.

Anthony Philip Heinrich Autograph Letter to John Rowe Parker
    31 August 1820
Ms. Coll. 186, Folder 142 Born in Bohemia in 1781, Anthony Philip Heinrich spent time in America in the early years of the 19th century in an effort to establish himself as a businessman. After several unsuccessful attempts he turned to a career in music. Although he had little formal musical training, Heinrich developed a wide-reaching reputation as a composer and violinist, performing in Pittsburgh, Kentucky, Boston, Philadelphia, and New York, where he eventually settled in 1837. His prominence among active music circles led him to be called "the Beethoven of America" by New York critics in the 1840s and to be considered America's first "professional" composer. In this letter Heinrich writes to John Rowe Parker, a Boston music dealer and the founder of the

    Rediscovering The Sylviad
    by Douglas A. Lee
The first two opus numbers of Anthony Philip Heinrich (1781-1861), The Dawning of Music in Kentucky and The Western Minstrel , have been available for nearly three decades. With the reprint of The Sylviad: or, Minstrelsy of Nature in the Wilds of North America , ed. J. Bunker Clark (Conners Publications, 1996; $69.95), we now have access to the major portion of Heinrich’s musical legacy, or at least to those works published during his lifetime. The Sylviad , opus 3, appeared in two parts, printed in Boston by Gottlieb Graupner. The first part (1823) promised on the title page 100 works (in fact there are seven) and was dedicated to the Royal Academy of Music in Great Britain. The second part (1825-26) promises the same number of compositions (but contains only twenty-seven) and carried the same dedication. “The Minstrel’s Catch” (p. 203) is repeated from the first collection, leading to some conjecture about Heinrich’s intentions for the second part. The editor, J. Bunker Clark, discusses these and related matters at length in his thoroughly documented Introduction. Clark has explored this work at even greater length in
