"Fanny Hensel: A Sesquicentennial Commemoration,"
by Suzanne Summerville
as published in the IAWM Journal , Oct 1997, pp. 3-8.
Felix Mendelssohn and his sister, Fanny Hensel, both died 150 years ago in 1847. This special anniversary has provided the incentive for Fanny and Felix conferences, exhibits of memorabilia, performances of their works and new research into their lives and music. Fanny scholar and performer Suzanne Summerville has been actively involved in many of the events that have taken place, and she presents the following series of articles and reports. What's in a Name? Fanny Hensel geb. Mendelssohn Bartholdy The very difficult question of becoming Christians, or to bring up one's children as Christian, faced Abraham and Lea Mendelssohn, as it did all Jews in Germany in the early years of the 19th century. In 1816 the Prussian Ministry of Finance issued a votum (or ruling) linking civil rights to a conversion: "The conversion of Jews to the Christian religion must be facilitated, and all civil rights must be linked to their conversion. But as long as a Jew remains Jewish, he cannot obtain a position in the State."1 Lea wished to have her children brought up as Lutherans, and on March 21, 1816, all four of the Mendelssohn children were baptized secretly by Pastor Staegemann in Berlin's Jerusalemkirche. After her conversion, Fanny took as a middle name Cäcilia in place of Zippora. The children's uncle, Jacob Salomon, Lea's brother, in order to replace his very Jewish-sounding family name, adopted the name of Bartholdy, after the former owner of some family estates. Although Abraham's two sisters had chosen to become Christians, he himself put off his own conversion. But when in August 1822 King Friedrich Wilhelm III declared that no members of the Jewish religion would be able to hold teaching positions in Prussia, Lea and Abraham converted to Protestantism in Frankfort on October 4, 1822. The name Bartholdy was legally added to their Jewish surname on the 13th of February 1823.2 Felix retained the double name written without a hyphen (it is sometimes written incorrectly). Brother Paul added the hyphen and his descendants can be distinguished by its inclusion in their double name.

a concert review by Irene Brychcin
Exactly 151 years and 3 days after its completion, conductor Robert Page, the women of the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh, soprano Lisa Temple, and pianist Joy Ann Crummie joined forces to present Faust by Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel in its American Premiere and first modern performance on Saturday, March 26, 1994. The reconstruction and modern edition of Faust is by Dr. Suzanne Summerville, Professor of Music at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
This excellent reconstruction and edition by Dr. Suzanne Summerville brings to the repertoire a fine example of early-middle nineteenth century choral, vocal, and pianistic styles, the work having been completed March 23, 1843. The role of the piano is vital in setting the mood of each contrasting section and the virtuosic demands placed upon the performer reflect Fanny Hensel's skill as a pianist. The playing of pianist Joy Ann Crummie brought forth the elegance and vivacity characteristic of this genre. Soprano Lisa Temple was outstanding as Ariel with a beautiful, clear, expressive voice. The women of the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh were superb as the spirit chorus with vocal coloration that enhanced the poetry and clearly defined the contrasts within the work. The masterful preparation, insight, and conducting of Music Director and Conductor Robert Page made this a cohesive, expressive, and enjoyable performance that was warmly and enthusiatically received by the audience.

Erato Quartett Basel (Emilie Haudenschild, violin; Attila Adamka, violin; Heinz Haudenschild, viola; Emeric Kostyak, cello). cpo 999 679-2 (72'23) My copy of the Norton/Grove Dictionary of Women Composers is comfortingly thick, over 500 pages; however, I probably own fewer than 25 classical CDs of music by women. Some labels CRI, for example release a substantial number of disks featuring women composers, but even today women are much more likely to be seen performing classical music than composing it. Women are to be heard but not heard from. No matter how much the situation appears to be changing at present and it is changing, consider the success in America of Joan Tower, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, Shalamit Ran and others (there are, of course, similar changes going on throughout the world) past iniquities cannot be altered, and it must be accounted something more than a shame that for centuries over half of our number have been silenced, often for no better reason than something as ludicrous as bourgeois propriety. This collection of string quartets by 19th century women demonstrates that the silence was not complete. Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel (1805-1847) wrote over 400 works, mainly songs and short works for piano. Her brother Felix seems to have encouraged her writing but discouraged its publication. She wrote mainly for her Berlin salon, the salon being one of the few socially acceptable outlets for female creativity in the 19th century. Her

A Brief Bio of the Arranger Dr. Barbara Harbach, Visiting Professor of Music at University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh, tours extensively as both a concert organist and harpsichordist. Her appearances include recitals throughout North America, Korea, Japan, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Yugoslavia and Russian Siberia as well as solo and continuo roles with symphony orchestras. She holds degrees from Pennsylvania State University, Yale University, Konzertdiplom from the Musikhochschule, Frankfurt, Germany, and the Eastman School of Music (D.M.A.). Her lively performances and recordings have captured the imagination of many American composers, and the body of work written for and dedicated to Harbach is substantial.
