Concert Program, 21 October 2000 Jan Overduin and Donald Knuth Benton Street Baptist Church, Waterloo, Ontario A fancy for two to play, by Thomas Tomkins (15711656) Freely This piece is the earliest known work for two performers at one keyboard. Originally written to be played on a virginal, it is perhaps even more delightful when played on a pipe organ. Indeed, Tomkins may well have done so himself, because he was organist at the Chapel Royal in London as well as at Worcester Cathedral. Suite for two keyboards, by George Frideric Handel (16851759) I. Allemande (Andante); II. Courante (Allegro); III. Sarabande (Moderato: cantando e piano sempre); IV. Chaconne (Vivace) Handel's suite, written about 1720, had to be reconstructed in 1950 by Thurston Dart because the manuscript for one of the two original parts was not preserved. The reconstructed portion is being played tonight on a smaller organ. Adagio One of Bach's most popular melodies, ``Sheep may safely graze,'' is often performed on the organ, although it was originally written for orchestra as part of a ``birthday cantata'' in 1713. A single organist cannot cope with all of the notes that Bach wrote, so Donald Knuth transcribed the original orchestral parts for organ duet in 1975. Adagio assai Beethoven composed several pieces for a mechanical clock-organ in 1799; the first of these is the Adagio being played tonight. One cannot hear all the notes of this piece unless it is played either by a machine or by two human organists. We are attempting the latter alternative.

The Fall of the Eagles The collapse of European Monarchy in November 1918 By By assassinating the Archduke Franz-Ferdinand in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914, Gavrilo Princip never imagined his regicide would plunge Europe into war. Not only did Princip's daring act bring the most widespread war Europe had witnessed, but it also changed the map of the continent forever. The old continent was governed by a collecting of monarchs who either ruled vast empires, or pint sized principalities. By the end of the war in November 1918, most of those rulers had lost their thrones. In the Europe of 1914, only four countries were not ruled by a monarch. France still had a living sovereign in the person of the Empress Eugenie, widow of Napoleon III, but the republic had survived for almost five decades. In 1910 King Manuel II of Portugal was overthrown and the republic quickly declared. The other two republics were Switzerland and the lilliputian state of San Marino, neither had ever known a monarchical system of government. The hurricane caused by the Great War eroded the political weight of the German Empire. By the end of the war, with Germany's infrastructure stretched to its limits, the monarchy was ready to collapse. The disappearance of the German Empire also meant to fall to the twenty odd monarchs who ruled within the empire.

Seine Werke wurden in Breslau rezipiert, beispielsweise gehörten sie nachweislich zu den Prüfungsstücken in der dortigen Brodmannschen Klavierschule. Sein Sohn Alexander arbeitete zeitweilig als Mitinhaber der bedeutenden "Schlesischen Verlagsanstalt" S. Schottlaenders, wo auch literarische Schriften von Salomon Jadassohns Tochter Beate erschienen. Salomon Jadassohn starb am 01.02.1902 in Leipzig.

European Royalty: German States Figure 1.I was not sure just which German royal family is pictured here. Our readrs inform us that the photo is of Prince Oskar with family. The photograph was probably taken about 1925. Note the button-on sailor suits and strap shoes. A HBC reader tells that Prince Oskar was Kaiser Wilhelm's fifth son. Importance The German royal houses represent a complex list of dynasties and principalities. The range from the important Austrian and Prussian families to one family that was not even a ruling family, the dukes of Turn und Taxis. At first glance many seem rather unimportant. Even some of the smaller states are important, however, because they provided the ruling families not only for Austria, England, (Imperial) Germany, and Russia as well as many smaller countries as well. A Dutch reader writes, "I find this very interesting. I just finished reading the book by Jerrold M. Packard, Victoria's Daughters (New York, 1998). It was amazing how German the British royal family was during Queen Victoria's reign. All of her 5 daughters (except 1) married Germans. Two of her sons married Germans, the 2 others sons had "Danish" and "Russian" wives, who in reality were just as German as the rest, since Germany supplied nearly all of the European royal houses with princes and princesses. Queen Victoria used to speak often in German with her husband, Prince Albert, and all of their children knew the language. But no royal family has been as German as the Dutch. The Orange-Nassaus have been solidly German since 6 generations. Finally our crown prince married an Argentinian and a Catholic to top it off."
