Hildegard of Bingen, 1098-1179 : A Visionary Life by Sabina Flanagan Drawing on contemporary sources, the text unfolds Hildegard's life from the time of her entrance into an anchoress's cell to her death as a famed visionary and writer, abbess and confidante of popes and kings, more than seventy years later. Against this background the author explores Hildegard's vast creative work, encompassing theology, medicine, natural history, poetry, and music. This new edition includes: a new preface, additions to the biographical sections which reveal new discoveries about Hildegard's life, updated references to the latest critical material on Hildegard's writings, and a new bibliography and discography. It is the great virtue of Sabina Flanagan's cool, scholarly, and reflective biography that it sets her story so firmly in her own age....A woman of electrifying visionary power, fascinating, often enigmatic and clearly of great presence, she was also a woman with a will and prejudices of her own....It is as such, wrinkles and all, that Sabina Flanagan presents her to us, and we must be grateful for the historical balance of her picture."

Counselor of popes and kings, Hildegard of Bingen has been posthumously politicized

Charlotte Allen Excerpted from The Women's Quarterly It's time for us to take back Hildegard of Bingen. For too long, the medieval German abbess, composer, and mystical poet has been dragooned into the role of cult figure for every half-baked notion of our time. Hildegard was justly famous all over Europe during her own time, the 12 th century, as a prodigious writer, an advisor of kings and prelates, and a healer of physical and mental ills. Her meditations and musical compositions are currently enjoying a huge revival, and while this rediscovery of her spiritual depth and artistic brilliance was long overdue, the resurgence in her fame has been a mixed blessing, for Hildegard is being re-invented as a posthumous spokeswoman for feminist causes and an icon of rebellion against the church. A prime example of this revisionism involves Hildegard's best-known religious work, "Scivias." The manuscript elaborates on the abbess's many visions of Divine Wisdom. Because Wisdom is personified as a woman in the Book of Proverbs and elsewhere in scripture, Hildegard's latter-day literary admirers have cast her as a worshipper of the Goddess Sophia, just like so many feminist theologians. Elsewhere, Hildegard has been turned into a holistic-health nut because she wrote a medical treatise. Indeed, “Holistic Healing,” an alternative medicine anthology casts her as the veritable Hippocrates of the alternative health movement. Because she had an especially beloved friend among her nuns, she has also been appropriated by lesbians, presiding with her 12th-century contemporary, St. Aelred of Rievaulx, over the Saint Aelred and Saint Hildegard Societythe gay ministry at the Episcopal Church of the Messiah in Santa Ana, California.

Into the Desert. Article about hildegard of bingen's music. By Norma Gentile, from October 1997 issue of Continuo.
http://www.continuo.com/oct97/gentile3.htm
INTO THE DESERT By Norma Gentile The rising popularity of chant and interest in that historical era has brought the works of Hildegard von Bingen again to the forefront. She was, in her own time of the 12th century, one of the dominant religious and social figures in Europe. Acclaimed as a seer, the founder and abbess of two monasteries for women, the composer of a complete morality play set to music, she was also a poet and author of nine books. Her writings on the vibrational properties of stones and gems, medicine, herbs and theology have been embraced by a range of people, including those in the traditional Catholic Church, the New Age movement and even the general public. I am repeatedly asked how I ended up specializing in the music of Hildegard von Bingen. The story goes something like this: In such a simple and inconspicuous manner, Hildegard of Bingen entered into my life. As I examined the book, I realized that not only were the musical contents by a woman whom I did not know, but that the Latin texts were also original, and quite unusual. This was about 1990. The ‘chant’ phenomenon had not yet occurred. My adventurous explorations into plainsong must have seemed archaic even to my early music friends, and were humorously tolerated by other musicians. To my parents, it was yet another step away from financial sanity - the first had been opera, then Early Music ("what kind of music?", my mother asked repeatedly) and finally plainchant, or Gregorian chant, of this unheard of twelfth century abbess. My mother, degreed in violin and piano in the 1950’s Julliard tradition, had had no exposure to Historically Informed Practice. Fortunately, she also has had no history of heart trouble, and is surviving it all quite well now.

The Washington Post Made to celebrate the 900th birthday of Hildegard von Bingen whom The New York Times has described as "Before the Renaissance, A Renaissance Woman," this documentary was shot at the major Hildegard sites: the tranquil ruins of the Disibodenberg; the flourishing present-day St. Hildegard Abbey; Trier (where Hildegard's visions were recognized by the Pope in 1148); 12th century Eberbach (an abbey that helped preserve the memory of Hildegard despite centuries of brutal wars), and Hildegard's beloved rivers, the tiny Nahe and the mighty Rhine with Roman ruins and lowering castles still lining its banks. Scholars interviewed on camera about Hildegard's life and surprising times include Barbara Newman, authority on Hildegard's theology of the feminine; Monika Klaes, specialist on Hildegard's bold letters; Irmgard Müller, world expert on Hildegard's herbal and medical work; and Franz Staab, author of a biography of Hildegard based on newly discovered 12th-century manuscripts.

In breathtaking prose, Joan Ohanneson has crafted an unforgettable encounter with Hildegard, the astonishing visionary and prophet, artist and healer, whose music is sweeping the charts today. Weaving into her text Hildegard's own vivid accounts of "the Living Light," the author brings to life the "feather on the breath of God" - Hildegard of Bingen, who shattered stereotypes of women, of saints, and of God for all time.

HILDEGARD of Bingen: Cosmic Christ, Religion of Experience, God the Mother
It is appropriate to remember Hildegard with light imagery since that is how she describes her spiritual awakening (see Vision Two below) . "When I was forty-two years and seven months old, a burning light of tremendous brightness coming from heaven poured into my entire mind. Like a flame that does not burn but enkindles, it inflamed my entire heart and my entire breast, just like the sun that warms an object with its rays" What did this illumination do for Hildegard? "All of a sudden, I was able to taste of the understanding of the narration of books. I saw the Psalter clearly and the evangelists and other catholic books of the Old and New Testaments." Hildegard was overcome by this experience of intuition, connection-making, and insight and went to bed sick. It was when she "placed my hand to writing" that she received new strength, got out of bed, and spent the following ten years writing her first book called Scivias. Hildegard's teaching forced people to "wake up," take responsibility, make choices. Prophets "illuminate the darkness,' she tells us. They are the people who can say "God has illuminated me in both my eyes. By them I behold the splendor of light in the darkness. Through them I can choose the path I am to travel, whether I wish to be sighted or blind by recognising what guide to call upon by day or by night.'' Here we learn the title of her book Scivias, which means "Know the Ways." Hildegard means "know the wise ways as distinct from the foolish ways." People who follow the ways of wisdom "will themselves become a fountain gushing from the waters of life ... For these waters - that is, the believers - are a spring that can never be exhausted or run dry. No one will ever have too much of them . . . the waters through which we have been reborn to life have been sprinkled by the Holy Spirit."

The value of a microcosmic/macrocosmic world view is underscored by Professor M.D. Chenu when he states that such a consciousness makes "nature and history interlock". In other words, Hildegard holds the key to healing the dangerous dualism between nature and history, creation and salvation, mysticism and prophecy, that has dominated much of Western intellectual life for centuries. This healing will not take place in an exclusively rational mode. That is one reason why Aquinas' scholasticism has failed to return a cosmos to the West. Still, the healing of the individual is also at stake in recovering a microcosm/macrocosm psychology. For if Aquinas is correct that the individual's fulfillment can only occur in "a universe that is itself unified," then the key to that healing experience of oneness must be Hildegard's kind of spiritual cosmology. This is one reason she resorts to the mandala so often to express compassion or healing. Careful readers of Hildegard and viewers of her Illuminations will see deep influences of the ancient goddess religions, of the Roman Aurora, the Egyptian Isis, the old Germanic Horsel, and the Hebrew hokma or female Wisdom figure as well as Aztec and Native American symbols.

Hildegard of Bingen
Monastic
Saint
Woman of Note Europe: Germany
Hildegard von Bingen, known as Sibyl of the Rhine for her musical compositions and poetry, was a visionary mystic and abbess of the Benedictine cloister of Disibodenberg. Her visions, which she'd experienced since a child, were confirmed by a committee of theologians and officially recorded in the work Scivias. Hildegard also wrote music, lives of saints, treatises on natural history and medicine, and correspondence containing prophecies and allegorical treatises. Though never formally canonized, she is listed as a saint in the Roman Martyrology for the miracles reported during her lifetime and at her tomb. The recent 900th anniversary of her birth generated renewed interest in her music, much of which has been recorded by groups such as The Anonymous 4, Gothic Voices and Sequentia.

Variations on the Name of Hildegard of Bingen
The 12 th -century German abbess Hildegard of Bingen (German "von Bingen") is renowned as an herbalist, a correspondent with kings, a mystic visionary, a poet, a playwright, and a brilliantly original composer. Recordings of her music abound, including a Euro-disco version of her chants; new-age seekers earnestly prescribe her herbal remedies, and the textbook I use for teaching World Civilizations considers her important enough as a poet to discuss her at some length without ever mentioning that she was also a composer. (She is also often called an artist, but the paintings associated with her were evidently executed by nuns under her supervision.) Although the frenzy surrounding Hildegard mounts every year, threatening to rival the Virginia Woolf industry in fervor if not in scale, her existence comes as news to most undergraduates, who seem to have great difficulty in remembering her name on tests. Herewith is a brief, incomplete list of some of the many variations on the spelling of her name I have encountered in student papers and examinations.

Writings of
St. Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179)
on the Holy Spirit Wisdom
Oh children of humanity, why have you corrupted tender Love, who gazes far into my depths and flows forth in works abounding? Because She flows within me, from Her in turn flow the living waters. She resembles a budding branch, for, as a virgin's embraces are most tender because of her integrity, even so Love's embraces are more tender than those of any other. But now She mourns, because audacious men tear her to pieces with their evil grumbling. Hence, She flees from them to that height whence She came, and weeps because Her children, whom She suckled at Her fertile breasts, fall sick and will not be cleansed from the corruption of their flighty minds.
