Other important works are the Ludus Tonalis (1943) for piano; the song cycle Das Marienleben (1923, 1948) set to poems by Rilke; the viola concerto Der Schwanendreher (1935), based on medieval German folk songs; the ballet

Biography
Paul Hindemith
Composer Germany Born 16 Nov 1895
Died 28 Dec 1963
Paul Hindemith's early music, expressionist and daring, earned him the reputation of an enfant terrible, while his later accomplished works have rarely been accused of over-excitement. His personal life though, a long struggle against Nazism, was anything but humdrum.
Hindemith studied as a violinist and composer (with Mendelssohn and Sekles) in Frankfurt and made an early reputation through his chamber music and expressionist operas. in his Kammermusik No 1, however, his language turned to neo-classicism; it was to be the first of seven works modelled on Baroque forms and values, though with more than a hint of jazzy modern sounds.
After spells as leader of the Frankfurt Opera orchestra (1915-23, with a break for army service) and as viola player in the Amar-Hindemith Quartet (1921-9) he gave the first performance of Walton's Viola Concerto in 1929. Much of his chamber music was written in 1917-24, including four of his six quartets and numerous sonatas, and his other works included lieder ('Das Marienleben'), music for newly invented mechanical instruments, music for schools and amateurs, and an opera ('Cardillac', a much underrated fantasy melodrama). He also taught in Berlin.
Perhaps his best-known work is the opera 'Mathis der Maler' (preceded by a symphony of orchestral excerpts). Hindemith dramatised the dilemma of the artist in society - a subject he was all too aware of, given his opposition to the Nazi regime in the 1930s. Hindemith's music drew official disapproval, and in 1938 he left for Switzerland, where 'Mathis' had its first performance. He moved on to the USA and taught at Yale (1940-53), but spent his last decade back in Switzerland.

* 16. Nov. 1895 in Hanau
† 28. Dez. 1963 in Frankfurt a. M.
http://www.hindemith.org/
Der Komponist Paul Hindemith wurde am 16. November 1895 in Hanau geboren.
