Music Webmaster Len Mullenger: Len@musicweb.force9.co.uk FAME AND NEGLECT JOE HOLBROOKE - BRITISH COMPOSER by Rob Barnett see also JOSEPH HOLBROOKE The Composer of Light Music by Philip L Scowcroft
When I first heard a tape of Holbrooke's orchestral piece Ulalume on a poem by Edgar Allan Poe I knew that I had made a discovery. Ulalume is a work of dark atmosphere and sustained beauty similar perhaps to Rachmaninov's The Isle of the Dead but with a lyrical vein much stronger than the Russian work. That was back in 1980. Since then seeking out the music of Joseph Holbrooke has become as much of an obsession for me as the writings of Edgar Allan Poe were for Holbrooke. Joseph Holbrooke belongs to the generation of composers at the core of the twentieth century British musical renaissance. He died in 1958, the same year as Vaughan Williams, and in almost total obscurity. His neglect began after the Great War and the gradient of descent increased dramatically from 1925 onwards. However he had a heyday and one with considerable celebrity. Joseph (more often known to his circle as 'Joe') Charles Holbrooke was born in Croydon, North London, on 5 July 1878. It seems that the place of birth was an accident of the touring music-hall life of his father and family.

He studied at the Royal Academy of Music. He made his piano debut at the age of twelve, playing in music hall, and later supported himself by playing piano and conducting. He was a musically prolific composer who spent much of his life evangelising for his own music and that of other British composers. His reputation as a composer entirely of works for large orchestras is quite misplaced. First performance together since 1966. Recorded in Cologne 1998." "So here they were, together again after 32 years, which is equivalent to the period separating Louis Armstrong's Hot Five recordings and Ornette Coleman's Tomorrow Is The Question . The essence of the trio was there from Bailey's opening pair of acerbic chords, through Bryars' ever attentive basslines, to Oxley's orchestrations of time itself. There was no sense of nostalgia here, more the feel of three men resuming a conversation they had begun some time ago, while mindful that their subject matter back then has been widely discussed in many languages since, and that this was a restatement through minds enriched with subsequent experiences." Music Webmaster Len Mullenger: Len@musicweb.force9.co.uk HOLBROOKE (1878-1958):
The Composer of Light Music

by Philip L Scowcroft
Joseph (or Josef, as he was sometimes styled) Holbrooke is rarely reckoned as a purveyor of the lighter musical forms. He is remembered, if at all, (and his music is notorious for its neglect, both in his lifetime and since) for his major works: at least eight operas, including a trilogy The Cauldron of Annwn , concertos for piano (2), violin and cello, at least eight symphonies, not all of them published, plus several symphonic poems and a large amount of chamber and piano solo music. His father was however a music-hall pianist, and the young Holbrooke composed many comic songs for that medium from the age of 12. In the early 1920s when fox-trots became the rage. he composed several, one of them rejoicing in the title Let's Brighten Brighton He wrote widely for brass and military bands. His brass band works mostly substantial, included a symphony Wild Wales and Song of Llewellyn , but they were not accepted into the repertoire, though Clive of India was voted as the test piece for the 1940 'Open Championship'. And his prolific output includes much that can be reckoned as being in or near the mainstream of 'Light Music'.
