Derek Bailey - “Playbacks” CD (Bingo)
“They do not understand music but they love the noise it makes!” – Thomas Beecham referring to British people. Derek Bailey really seems to be into trying new things and working with people he’s never worked with before to keep the music growing, I don’t believe it’s just talk with him. He’s even collaborated with drum and bass artists. In 1998 he released “Playbacks” where he improvises over prerecorded percussive tracks made mostly by arty electronica artists. I initially told Brian Faulkner it just sounded like listening to a solo Bailey record in one of the station’s listening rooms while someone is blasting drum and bass in one of the other rooms. But now it sounds a little more interesting. There’s also a great John Oswald (of Plunderphonics fame) composition made out of samples of solo Bailey tracks. My favorite albums so far are “One Time” and “Banter” both released in 1995. I agree with Faulkner that the really sparse style he does on some of his solo albums is pretty hard to get into. Both these CDs are quiet enough to not sound like a cluttered mess but there’s also a lot going on between the musicians and constant changes – Bailey calls it “insect music” in the liner notes. In the best moments things just seem to fit really well in very hard-to-pin-down ways. I had a mini-conversation with Brian Weiss about hearing things in music that might not really be there. These discs might be an example of that.

    Audience Perspective
by Andrew Shone ..these developments came about mainly through private, daytime, playing and also at a weekly lunchtime concert we organized throughout that two and a half year period in a small upstairs room over a pub. During that time we collected a small audience that attended these performances with astonishing regularity and faithfulness.... from 'Joseph Holbrooke' in 'Improvisation: Its nature and practice in Music During the '63-'66 existence of Joseph Holbrooke, its worth recalling that the general cultural milieu was in a state of high activity. The rock scene boomed, mainly British led, and the mid-century assumption that everything American was up-to-date, in both low and high art, started to come under question. The swinging sixties. For many jazz listeners this was a conundrum. Just as, a decade earlier, there had been the 'mouldy figs' and the 'boppers' so, by the early sixties, there were the 'modernists' and the 'new thingsters'. To a small section of this audience, however, the kaleidoscopic variety of music available, mainly stemming from the black American tradition, gave rise to a surprising openmindedness. It was both possible and desirable to sample as much and as widely as possible. Sometimes all in one day. It was all part of the spectrum of a whole area which was different from other musics. It contained two elements which didn't seem to occur in classical or rock: a fluid rhythmic pulse and a spontaneity of sound. What one could hear in the Coltrane quartet, then at its zenith, was clearly the descendent of Joe 'King' Oliver et. al. There was so much intuitive enthusiasm in musicians and audience alike that there was little time or need for intellectualization.

THE ROMANTIC PIANO CONCERTO - 23
    Holbrooke and Wood
Excerpts from the sleeve notes The musical age that was ended by August 1914 had seen an enormous expansion of the circuit for touring virtuosi, then, as now, London being one of the biggest centres for artists from abroad. Visiting pianists included d'Albert, Busoni, de Pachmann, Dohnányi, Hoffmann, Lamond, Sapellnikoff, Edward Macdowell, Leonard Borwick and Emil Sauer, and thus the popularity of Romantic piano concertos was considerable, and in the later years of the nineteenth century, all the now most popular works of the repertoire were heard in London, including concertos by Tchaikovsky (1889), Brahms (No 1, 1872; No 2, 1882), Grieg (1874), Glazunov (No 1, 1913), Macdowell (No 2, 1900), Rachmaninov (No 1, 1900; No 2, 1902; No 3, 1911) and Arensky (1903), and also examples by many of the pianists themselves. In England many young composers followed their example, and the emergence of a notable group of young British pianist-composers saw many Romantic piano concertos by them written and performed. Between 1895 and 1915 there were more than twenty, most (but not all) now forgotten, including concertos by Walthew, Rosalind Ellicott, Crowther, Stanford, Cowen, Harry Farjeon, Bowen, Tapp, Edward Isaacs, Delius, Montague Phillips, Hinton, Howells, Kathleen Bruckshaw, Walford Davies, Cyril Scott, Ames, Julian Clifford, Dixon, Welton Hickin, Macpherson, Matthay and Speaight. Typical of these was the Concerto by Haydn Wood completed and performed in 1909, and the Song of Gwyn ap Nudd by Joseph Holbrooke completed in 1908 and first performed in 1910.
