Sun. October 08, 2000 Box score Game Recap
ATLANTA (Ticker) In Week Two, Dan Reeves was pounded by the first team he coached. Today, he was beaten by another one of his former teams. Led by a defense which shut down Jamal Anderson and knocked quarterback Chris Chandler out of the game, the New York Giants posted a 13-6 victory over the Atlanta Falcons. The Giants (4-2), who were coming off back-to-back losses to Washington and Tennessee, remain tied with the Redskins for first place in the NFC East. "We took the field with the right attitude," Giants coach Jim Fassel said. "We took the attitude, we can, we will. If you have the right attitude, it's a lot easier to get better." In their Super Bowl season two years ago, Reeves and the Falcons marched into the Meadowlands and rolled to a 34-20 win over the Giants. Chandler threw for 266 yards and two touchdowns and Anderson rushed for 110 yards. The win was especially sweet for Reeves, who was fired as Giants coach after a 6-10 season in 1996 and replaced by Fassel. But the 2000 Falcons (2-4) are operating with a sub-par Anderson, who is recovering from a torn ACL suffered last season. Today, he rushed for a mere 12 yards on as many carries and Atlanta was held to 13 yards on the ground, a franchise low. The previous worst was 19 rushing yards in a December 1, 1974 against Los Angeles.

Frederick Holmes was born in Bermondsey on 27th September 1889. After attending a London Board School he joined the British Army in 1907. He served for seven years but within two weeks of leaving the First World War started and he was recalled as a reservist.
Soon after arriving in France with the British Expeditionary Force , Holmes was involved in fighting at Le Cateau. When Norman Woodcock was badly wounded, Holmes carried the 12 stone on his back for two miles until he reached some stretcher bearers. Holmes returned to his battalion to find many of them killed or wounded. He placed a wounded man on one of the horses of a artillery gun team and attempted to take him to safety. Unfortunately the man fell off and was lost in the dark. Soon afterwards Holmes was so badly wounded that he came close to having his leg amputated.
For the bravery he showed at Le Cateau, Holmes won the

This index is arranged in SOUNDEX order. This is a machine generated method of arranging names together with similar sounds. The method is not perfect, but often serves to identify alternate spellings of names in old records.
To calculate a soundex code for a particular name, you can Download a copy of our FREE Soundex calculator program, or use the following formula: 1. Take the first letter of the name.
        2. Throw away all of these letters:
          A - E - I - O - U - H - W
        3. Take the remaining letters and assign numeric values from the following chart. For any double letter combination, throw the seccond away - thus an MM in HAMMOND is coded as HMND = H553.
          B - P - F - V = 1
          C - S - K - G - J - Q - X - Z = 2
          D - T = 3
          L = 4
          M - N = 5 R = 6
        4. Once you get 3 characters, quit coding. 5. Take the first letter of the name, and add the 3 numbers to produce the soundex code.

Julian Holmes on The Sears Island Cargo Port
    Introduction:
In an Open Letter dated June 5 to Maine Governor Angus King, Wayne resident Julian Holmes criticizes the Governor's economic development and environmental-protection policies. Holmes' observations evolved from responses to a series of Freedom of Information (FOI) requests he made of three Federal and three Maine-State agencies to examine files related to the proposal to develop Sears Island as a cargo port. The files reveal:
  • Failure by certain State and Federal officials to follow carefully the provisions of the National Environmental Policy Act. Surprisingly skimpy records kept by Governor King on the Sears Island cargo-port, one of King's most highly promoted economic- development plans. Possible reluctance of Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (DIFW) officials when asked by the Governor's Chief Legal Counsel to make "detailed" responses to Federal scientists on the impact of the Sears Island cargo-port project: "It is a difficult and painful situation for scientific staff [DIFW] when directed to prepare comments on a scientific issue in a particular way which may not reflect staff's scientifically based opinion." (EPA Memorandum, October 19, 1995)
  • Holmes feels King's meager record-keeping is symptomatic of flawed public policy, and that more concern should be shown by the Governor for existing State and Federal laws that govern the public's right-to-know about operations of government. According to Holmes, too many of King's policies are designed to benefit the wealthy and the interests of big corporations. Yet, promotion and implementation of these policies is at taxpayers' expense as with the Sears Island cargo-port, the anti-Ban-Clearcutting campaign, the use of Reformulated Gasoline (RFG), the fast-tracked MBNA corporate compound at Ducktrap Mountain in Northport, and the Kenetech wind-power project.
