Gustav Holst By Paul Musser paul@musica.co.uk Born 21 September, 1874 Cheltenham, England Died 25 May, 1934 London, England A quiet introvert and dedicated teacher, Gustav Holst combined English folksong and Hindu mysticism in an intriguing fashion, producing a marvelous array of compositions that go far beyond his well-loved Planets. Encouraged by his father, the young Gustav Holst made early musical forays on the piano, violin and trombone. Although plagued by illness, the young Holst kept an active interest in music and began composing in his early teens. He studied briefly with Frederick Simms at Merton College, Oxford before returning to Cheltenham to work as an organist and choirmaster. Holst left his childhood home in 1893 for the Royal College of Music, studying counterpoint with Stanford and taking classes with Parry.

© eMe Web oficial: www.gholst.org

    Biography
    Gustav Holst
Composer England Born 21 Sep 1874
    Died 25 May 1934
His showpiece orchestral suite, 'The Planets', tends to overshadow the rest of Holst's music (he considered his best work the bleak orchestral piece 'Egdon Heath', inspired by Thomas Hardy). He taught music at a girls' school in Hammersmith, London, and many of the piece he composed were for the school. He shared his friend Vaughan Williams's rural ideals, both in his folk-inspired music and in his country walks, and wrote directly and with a strong sense of rhythm.
Despite his Swedish-looking name, Gustavus Theodore von Holst was born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, in a well-to-do part of England. His father was an organ and piano teacher, and after his mother died when Gustav was eight, he was cared for by his Aunt Nina.
Holst's first steps into composition were inspired after he found Berlioz's book on instrumentation at the age of 12, and after working as a village organist and choirmaster, he went to Oxford in 1893 to study counterpoint and then to London to study at the Royal College of Music.
However, Holst had begun to experience pain in his right hand, so bad he could hardly even hold a pen. It was diagnosed as neuritis, which prevented him from playing a keyboard instrument for any length of time again. He had to give up hopes of becoming a concert pianist, and switched to the trombone to bring in a wage. Like many musicians of his time, he was mesmerised by the Wagner operas he saw at Covent Garden, and fascinated by the rich writing and chromatic harmonies. Wagner's influence is clear in some of Holst's compositions of this period, though as a student composer he didn't stand out: he shelved his early works, calling them 'Early Horrors'.

American composer George Crumb has described Star-Child as 'a sense of progression from darkness (or despair) to light (or joy and spiritual realisation)'. One of Crumb's largest scale works, Star-Child is written for soprano, children's choir, men's speaking choir and bell ringers, while the eight player percussion section is called to perform on iron chains, pot-lids, metal thunder sheets and a wind machine. The second half of the concert continues the celestial theme with Holst's masterpiece The Planets. Pre-concert talk 6.00pm, Barbican Hall
