Gustav Holst Gustavus Theodore von Holst nace el 21 de septiembre de en Cheltenham (Inglaterra). Su padre, pianista y organista , deseaba que su hijo fuera un virtuoso del piano y para tal fin le impartió exigentes lecciones del instrumento desde muy temprana edad. La delicada salud del pequeño Gustav (entre otras lesiones sufría una neuritis en el brazo derecho) le impedían progresar al nivel de la exigencia paterna. Por otro lado, el joven se sentía más inclinado hacia la composición. Tal era su devoción, que aún en edad temprana estudió por propia voluntad el Tratado de instrumentación de Hector Berlioz En ingresa en el Royal College of Music , donde es compañero de estudios de Ralph Vaughan Williams . Además de a las de composición asistió a las clases de trombón. En contrae matrimonio con Isobel Harrison , a pesar de que sus recursos económicos sólo provienen de sus trabajos como trombón en clubs nocturnos y en orquestas londinenses de segunda fila. Holst, Gustav Theodore British composer, known for his compositions based on Hindu literature and English folk song. Born in Cheltenham, England, he studied with the British composer Sir Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) while earning a living as a trombonist and conductor. After 1919 he taught at the Royal College of Music in London. His important works before about 1912 are settings of Brahman scriptures, including the chamber opera Savitri (1908). Later, like his close friend the British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, he turned his attention to English folk song; his many folk song arrangements for band, orchestra, and chorus culminated in the one-act opera At the Boar's Head (1924). His most frequently performed work is The Planets (1916), an orchestral suite, the framework of which is based on the astrological symbols for planetary bodies.

January/February 2002 Welcome to the Gustav Holst Website. Gustav Holst was born in Cheltenham in 1874. His most famous piece, The Planets , is just one of many great works that was left behind. Holst died in London in 1934 at the age of 59. This website is in honor of a great composer's life, his music, and his legacy to modern composers. 2 Concert Announcements Friday 8 March 7.30pm, Barbican CRUMB: Star-Child HOLST: The Planets Kazushi Ono conductor Valdine Anderson soprano 'A work of immense power, daring and, at times, even horror' Time Magazine on George Crumb's Star-Child American composer George Crumb has described Star-Child as 'a sense of progression from darkness (or despair) to light (or joy and spiritual realisation)'. One of Crumb's largest scale works, Star-Child is written for soprano, children's choir, men's speaking choir and bell ringers, while the eight player percussion section is called to perform on iron chains, pot-lids, metal thunder sheets and a wind machine. Eng. composer of Swed. descent. Trained as a pianist, his father being a pf. teacher. In 1892 he became organist and choirmaster at Wyck Rissington, Glos. His operetta Lansdowne Castle was prod. in Cheltenham in 1893, after which his father sent him to the RCM to study comp. under Stanford and the org. under Hoyte. At the same time he learned the tb., his pf.-playing being handicapped by chronic neuritis in the arm. In coll. holidays he played the tb. on seaside piers in the White Viennese Band. He left the RCM in 1898, having formed there a lifelong friendship with Vaughan Williams which extended to frank and detailed criticism of each other's comps. He worked as a trombonist in the Carl Rosa Opera 1898-1900 and Scottish Orch. 1900-3 and learned a smattering of Sanskrit in order to be able to trans. hymns from the Rig Veda which he wished to set to mus.
