Alan Hovhaness 'My purpose is to create music, not for snobs, but for all people, music which is beautiful and healing'
20th Century American composer. Like fellow-Americans Charles Ives and Harry Partch, a true maverick. Rejected mid-century vogues of Americana, serialism and atonality. Instead pioneered contemporary development of archaic and Eastern musical models to forge neo-renaissance and neo-oriental works, putting him amongst the earliest synthesizers of East and West traditions, decades before the terms 'fusion' and 'World Music' had been coined. Pioneered 'ad libitum' aleatoricism in 1944, some 15 years before the European avant garde. As early as the 1940s, his employment of ever-shifting melodies over static harmonies, plus use of rhythmic cycles, pre-empted the Minimalist movement of the late 1960s. The visionary and mystical nature of his work, sometimes intoxicating in its directness and simplicity, rank him as the musical progenitor to the later, so-called Spiritual Minimalists, such as Arvo Pärt and John Tavener. His significance remains overlooked by musical academia, partly because scholars have not looked for radical developments within post-War tonal music, still less in music of great beauty with audience appeal.

Composer Alan Hovhaness Dies at 89
Alan Hovhaness
Photo courtesy of C.F. Peters lan Hovhaness, a prolific composer who melded Western and Asian musical genres, died in Seattle on June 21, 2000. He was 89 and had suffered from a severe stomach ailment for the last three years. Hovhaness was born in Somerville, MA, on March 8, 1911 to Haroutiun Hovhaness Chakmakjian, a chemistry professor, and Madeline Scott Chakmakjian. His Scottish mother thought her husband's Armenian last name sounded too foreign for a young child growing up in a suburb of Boston, so she changed his name to Alan Hovhaness when he was still quite young. Hovhaness began improvising even before he had piano lessons, and began writing music as soon as he learned to read it at the age of seven. By age 13, Hovhaness had already written two operas, Bluebeard and Daniel , as well as a number of smaller works. His early piano teachers were Adelaide Proctor and Heinrich Gebhard, and his first composition studies were with Frederick Converse at the New England Conservatory of Music (following a brief period at Tufts The pivotal moment in Hovhaness' development as a composer was in 1942, when he won a scholarship to study at

Alan Hovhaness, for years a resident of the great Northwest, was one of the most prolific figures in American music today. He was born Alan Vaness Chakmakjian, in Massachusetts in 1911. His mother was Scottish and his father an Armenian chemistry professor. He began composing early in his life and attended the New England Conservatory in the 1930's. He was heavily influenced by Armenian and Asian music, in part because of his heritage, but also it is due to his travels to countries such as Armenia, India, Japan, and Korea. He rarely relies on a standard western scale or mode or standard classical ideas of harmony and melody. His music is often what you could call incantory, or repetitive and stripped of excesses. Hovhaness said, "To me, atonality is against nature. There is a center to everything that exists. The planets have the sun, the moon has the earth. The reason I like oriental music is that everything has a firm center. All music that has a center is tonal." He wrote well over 400 pieces, including at least 9 operas, 2 ballets, more than 60 symphonies, and more than 100 chamber pieces... but this barely scratches the surface.

ALAN HOVHANESS on CRYSTAL The Authentic Voice ALAN HOVHANESS conducts his own music on CRYSTAL RECORDS (including many world premiere recordings)
INTRODUCTION Hovhaness is among the most prolific of composers - in company with restless creators like Milhaud, Martinu and Villa-Lobos. His catalogue runs to hundreds of opus numbered works. Regretfully we must note that he destroyed stacks of early works during the 1940s. One can imagine the state of his catalogue if he had simply archived this 'juvenilia' in a University rather than burning it. Quantity is one thing - impressive as far as it goes - but what about the quality of the music? This has come in for some opprobrium from critics affronted at coming across music of the 1950s-1980s in such a frankly lyric vein. It is, they maintain, too unvaried, static and too easy to listen to. Certainly a Hovhaness symphony is easily enough recognisable but then so are the Nielsen and Martinu symphonies. This does not take away from their individual beauty, sturdy drama and slow-speaking eminence. Hovhaness has quarried Armenian, Middle Eastern, Japanese and Malaysian music yet not once does the music lapse into cheap post-card emotions or simplistic pictorialism. Hovhaness is no brother to Ketelbey but has more in common (if we must find parallels) with Percy Grainger, Vaughan Williams, Charles Griffes, John Foulds and the group who may well have found their origin in his music, the minimalists like Reich and Glass.

Over the last three years, a large number of discs of music by Hovhaness have been released (amongst contemporary composers, only Henryk Gorecki is likely to have been more visible). At last count, there were more than twenty discs available with a substantial Hovhaness "presence"... that being said, the sheer volume of Hovhaness's body of work means that the material presently available is less than representative of his entire career; with the skew blatantly towards the orchestral work and away from his operatic and vocal works (of his ten operas, only the stageable oratorio "Lady of Light" has been recorded... similarly, only a handful of his choral works available; and only the "Saturn" cycle of his songs). There are also a number of key recordings presently lost in deletion - most obviously the Kostelanetz recordings of the 1970s (which include the original version of "And God Created Great Whales"). Pioneering recordings with the MGM String O/Surinach and the Eastman-Rochester Symphony Orchestra/Hanson also await rediscovery. The majority of Hovhaness recordings are presently on the Crystal, Delos and Koch International Classics labels. The Crystal set is the largest; and includes the complete catalog of "Poseidon" recordings supervised and conducted by Hovhaness in the 1970s as well as more recent recordings by Amos, Schwarz, Gold and Hovhaness... unfortunately, Crystal discs can be difficult to obtain outside the US. They also tend to suffer from less than useful tracking - extended works such as "Majnun", "St Vartan" and "Odyesseus" symphonies are restricted to two tracks only (as previously mentioned, the "St Vartan" symphony consists of 24 separate sections). It should also be noted that Hovhaness is one of those composer/conductors who takes his own music more ruggedly than anyone else would dare to; so these recordings should not necessarily be seen as ideal introductions to his work.

Hovhaness, Alan 1911-, American composer, b. Somerville, Mass. Hovhaness is of Armenian descent, and many of his works are based on Armenian culture or show Middle Eastern or Asian influence. He is interested in unusual sonorities. Hovhaness is enormously prolific; although he destroyed many compositions in 1940, his extant works number in the hundreds. Among them are Lousadzak [coming of light] (1945), for piano and strings; the symphonic poem Ukiyo-Floating World (1965); and And God Created Great Whales (1970), for orchestra and recorded humpback whale.
