COMPOSERS Herbert Howells
Herbert Howells
b. d. Herbert Howells was born in Lydney, Gloucester on 17 October 1892.
He showed a keen interest in composition early in his life and, at the age of eighteen, became a pupil of Herbert Brewer, Organist of Gloucester Cathedral. In 1912 he was awarded a scholarship to the Royal College of Music and studied under Charles Villiers Stanford, Walter Parratt, Charles Wood and Hubert Parry. In 1913 Howells write his Piano Concerto No 1 in C minor. This was his first orchestral work: originally given the number Op 8 by the composer, he later renumbered it as Op 4. This concerto received its world premiere in July 1914 at the Queen's Hall, London with Arthur Benjamin as soloist. (His Piano Concerto No 2 in C Major was later commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Society and first performed at the Queen's Hall in 1925 by Harold Samuel, conductor Malcolm Sargent)
In 1920, after ill-health forced him to relinquish his position as sub-organist of Salisbury Cathedral, Howells returned to the RCM to teach composition, an occupation which was to interest him until the end of his life. Howells also taught at St Paul's Girls' School, Hammersmith, and, in 1950, was appointed King Edward VII Professor of Music at London University.
Unlike his close friend and mentor, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Howells never collected or made direct use of folk songs. He did, however, accept their importance as part of a wider musical heritage but preferred to allow church modes and the pentatonic scale to play a more prominent part in the construction of his output. In works such as the Fantasia for Cello and Orchestra (1936) and the Concerto for String Orchestra (1938), Howells shows his ability to incorporate a smooth melodic line with an almost disturbing harmonic dissonance.

Howells became head organist at Aylburton Church in Gloucestershire and at this time heard music at Gloucester Cathedral that would change his life. Gloucester, Worcester and Hereford Cathedrals have, since around 1724, hosted the annual Three Choirs Festival and it was during the Festivals in 1907 and 1910 that Howells first heard George Frideric Handel's Messiah Sea Drift by Frederick Delius, and the premiere of Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis for String Orchestra Mass in the Dorian Mode , his first liturgical choral work, for his lessons with Stanford and it was such a success that it was performed by the Westminster Cathedral Choir later that year, the first of many honours. In 1916, Howells received money from the Carnegie Trust for his Pianoforte Quartet in A minor

12. Cantori New York: Herbert Howells
HERBERT HOWELLS. Born in Lydney, Gloucester on October 17, 1892, as avery young man Herbert Howells decided he wanted to be a composer.
http://www.cantorinewyork.com/composers_archive/howells.html
HERBERT HOWELLS Born in Lydney, Gloucester on October 17, 1892, as a very young man Herbert Howells Concerto for Strings, composed in 1938, comes from his later era. A characteristic of his early music is its breezy, often whimsical youthfulness. This is not to infer that his later music is excessively weighty or morbid, but that his early music is blessed with a mercurial lightness that seems missing from much of his later phase (a rule not without exceptions, as in his Sonatina for piano, composed in 1971, a composition brimming with youthful piquancy). Harmonically Howells' early music is quite approachable, being composed in an extended tonal style. It frequently makes use of modality, folksong aspects (without actually quoting them), and polytonality. Unfortunately, the event had such an impact on him that Howells all but stopped composing for a decade. There were more powerful blows to come. In 1934, Sir Edward Elgar died, an event that affected him deeply. The next year, his only son Michael died at age nine. At the advice of a number of close friends, Howells began to take refugeand find consolationin his music. One of the first results was Hymnus Paradisi , regarded as his finest composition.

Herbert Howells
O ne of my favorite composers, Howells was born in 1892 in Lydney, Gloucester. By the year 1912 he had won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music, where his main teachers were Charles Stanford and Charles Wood . Shortly after his arrival, his Mass in the Dorian Mode was sung at Westminster Cathedral, providing Howells with lime-light.
E arly in his career he fell ill, and was not expected to live, yet by 1920 he had recovered and in the same year began to teach composition at RCM, which he continued until he was 80. He taught, adjudicated and made people want to sing. He was appointed King Edward VII Professor of Music at London University in 1950.
M ost of Howells church music was written well into his career, however there are three pieces worth mentioning which come from his earlier years; A Spotless Rose, Sing Lullaby, 1918-20; Nunc Dimittis, 1924. His music is an amelioration of the styles of Parry, Stanford, and Walton. He was inspired by all forms of music. He had a love of modes and counterpoint. He can be considered one of, if not, the greatest Georgian Composers, and his best works can be considered some of the finest writing by an English Composer in the 20th century.
H owells is one of my favourite composers. His work is so deep and profound, yet very easy to follow. The range of melodies and harmonies is astounding; it would have been great to take a lesson or two from him!

Howells, Herbert (1892 - 1983)
Herbert Howells started his musical career as a cathedral organist. He succeeded Gustav Holst as director of music at St Paul's Girls' School in London and taught composition for many years at the Royal College of Music. A pupil of Stanford and Charles Wood at the Royal College, he wrote music within the prevailing English tradition, showing some affinity with Vaughan Williams in his choral music. Orchestral Music The orchestral music of Howells includes two Piano Concertos, a Pastoral Rhapsody and, in 1949, Music for a Prince. The Concerto for Strings of 1939 was followed by a Suite, also for string orchestra. Chamber Music Howells wrote an interesting Phantasy Quartet and a later String Quartet 'In Gloucestershire'. Among other compositions for instrumental ensemble are a Rhapsody Quintet for clarinet and string quartet, sonatas for oboe and for clarinet and piano, and three Violin Sonatas. Organ Music As an organist by training, Howells added significantly to the repertoire of English organ music, notably in two Organ Sonatas, four organ Rhapsodies and sets of Psalm Preludes. Recommended Recording Psalm Preludes Op. 32
