Composers Biography Languages John Ireland Life Works Best Works Photo Gallery ... Home Page John Ireland Life A pupil at the Royal College of Music in London, John Ireland studied with Sir C.H. Stanford and mixed with such contemporaries as Holst and Vaughan Williams He later taught composition at the Royal College, while earning his living for many years as an organist and choirmaster. After destroying all his early work, he concentrated on the composition of picturesque orchestral pieces. Elgar , while admitting contemporary influences from abroad into a very personal idiom. He used his understanding of the piano to compose many descriptive works and his sensitive poetic songs released English song composition from the Teutonic style. John Ireland Works Ireland's "Piano Concerto" and his "Concertino pastorale" for strings are notable works, with his once popular "A London Overture". Other orchestral music includes the prelude "The Forgotten Rite" and the symphonic rhapsody "Mai-Dun". He provided a very competent score for the film "The Overlanders".

Policy Issues in Ireland - John O'Connell
The image of Ireland as a homogenous society, predominantly white, monocultural and Roman Catholic, has had a major impact on policy issues for minority ethnic groups. It has meant that the existence of such groups could be largely ignored or even denied. Even as recently as 1990, it was possible for an Irish MEP to make the following statement to the European Parliament Committee of Inquiry into Racism and Xenophobia: '(since) immigration has not been a reality at all (in Ireland) we do not have racial minorities.... we have something in the region of 20,000 registered aliens in the country... we do not have problems such as are faced in other countries.' The same MEP also stated the following in a written submission to that committee: 'Ireland is a racially homogeneous country with no ethnic minority groups. As a consequence there are no racial problems of the kind experienced in countries with such groups. Neither is there a large presence of foreigners... the position could alter if the influx became sustained... there is, however, a minority group of travelling people giving rise to some of the problems associated with racism.' It is not surprising, given this position, that issues such as multi-culturalism, non denominational schools and anti-racism have not featured very prominently in past debates about the Irish education system. The education system could have carried on without having to adjust in any way to accommodate the needs of the few minority groups which existed. One significant minority group which became more visible and a challenge to the system was Travellers. The official response to the educational needs of Travellers is worth examining, not only in terms of evaluating its effectiveness for the group, but also in terms of how the education system responds to difference in general, as well as its capacity to handle diversity.
