Heinrich Isaac
(c.1450 - 1517)
Dutch Renaissance composer of vocal music, one of the leading contemporaries of Josquin Desprez . Isaac composed in all the forms of the time, preferring a conservative harmonic idiom, usually based on imitation. He was one of the most prolific composers of parody masses, using such unusual themes as "bass dances." As with many of his contemporaries, Isaac spent extensive time in Italy. He was highly influential in the later development of music in Renaissance Germany. ~ Todd McComb

Heinrich Isaac
(ca. 1450 - 1517)
Of Flemish birth. Served Lorenzo de'Medici as composer and singer 1484-1492. Court composer to Maximilian I (in Vienna, Innsbruck, Constance) 1496-1512, member of the Hofkapelle. Taught Ludwig Senfl . Returned to Florence with the Medici restoration. Called by contemporaries "second only to Josquin"; especially good at motets. Would work for less (120 ducats in 1502), get along with others better, and produce more music. Wrote masses, motets, songs in many languages; wrote a cycle of mass propers called the Choralis Constantinus : more than 300 propers, one for every Sunday of the year and many feasts and saints' days. Masses in both French/Italian (through-composed) and German styles (alternating polyphony with liturgical chant or short organ interludes).

    Isaac, Heinrich (c. 1450 - 1517)
It would be impossible to single out works from the enormous quantity of music written by the great Flemish composer Heinrich Isaac, a musician whose career took him to Florence, under the patronage of the Medici, and to Vienna, where he served the Emperor Maximilian, exercising a decisive influence on the music of the German part of the empire. He died in Florence in 1517. In addition to a quantity of music for the church, Isaac wrote a considerable amount of secular music, much of it vocal, including the well known Insprugk, ich muss dich lassen, a reference to the time he spent in Innsbruck in the service of the Emperor.

It would be going too far to say that Heinrich Isaac is an unjustly neglected composer: yet his reputation is still confined to the limbo which contains so many of the leading figures of the renaissance period. He is probably a little more performed than Philippe de Monte MIDI FILE - Canzona But in the company of those few who were rated amongst the very best in their lifetimes, Isaac has much to prove to modern audiences. MIDI FILE - "Innsbruck, ich muss dich lassen" No one would think on current evidence to mention him in the same breath as his great contemporary and fellow-Netherlander Josquin Des Prés , yet in the early years of the sixteenth century they were held to be on the same level of achievement: the two pre-eminent composers in Europe. If it became commonplace to treat Josquin and Isaac as a complementary pair, in the way that Lassus and Palestrina or J.S. Bach and Handel are, an instructive shift in emphasis would be achieved. MIDI FILE - "La my"
