war ein amerikanischer Komponist und wurde am 20. Oktober 1874 in Danbury geboren und starb am 19. Mai 1954 in New York. Biography
Charles Ives
Composer USA Born 20 Oct 1874
Died 19 May 1954
Ives had no followers and no predecessors; he wrote music that is individual and yet wholly derivative; he was an insurance executive and yet a composer. He was, all in all, a curious and unclassifiable figure in 20th-century music, who wrote in his spare time out of the office, knowing that his experimental pieces would probably never be performed. (He did begin to gain some recognition as a pioneer in the 1950s, at the very end of his life, and his Third Symphony won a Pulitzer in 1947.)
Ives's music uses a bewildering array of accidental-sounding techniques. Tunes in one key and harmonies in another; bands playing out of tune and out of time with each other simultaneously; coincidences of sound; wrong notes, superimposed rhythms. But there's something about the exuberance, the mix-and-match extravagance that could only be American - and when he succeeds, his music is amazing stuff. 'Three Places in New England' is his most familiar work (he was a proud New Englander, born in Danbury, Connecticut) while the Concord Sonata and many of the songs are also popular. Perhaps his most bizarre recording is 'They Are There!', a tongue-in-cheek song in a collage of wartime patriotic styles. It was recorded privately, sung by Ives. The Kronos Quartet obtained the recording, put some fiddling on top, and released the track on one of their CDs - four decades after his death in New York in 1954. Ives would have been amused and delighted.

... Home Page Charles Ives Life American composer of exceptional inventiveness, Charles Ives learned a great deal from his bandmaster father. He began composing before he went to Yale to study music and where he played the organ. Afterwards he had a successful career working in insurance and he only composed in his leisure hours.
Eventually his health suffered from the strain and he composed very little after 1927, although his reputation grew. They are expressed in a musical idiom that makes use of complex polytonality (the use of more than one key or tonality at the same time) and rhythm. Charles Ives Works Ives’s third symphony, for small orchestra, entitled "Camp Meeting", reflects much of his own background, and has separate movement titles "Old Folks Gatherin'", "Children's Day" and "Communion". The fourth symphony includes a number of hymns and Gospel songs, and his so-called First Orchestral Set, otherwise known as New England Symphony, which depicts three places in New England. He wrote a number of psalm settings, part-songs and verse settings for unison voices and orchestra.

Ives, Charles 1874-1954, American composer and organist, b. Danbury, Conn., grad. Yale, 1898; pupil of Dudley Buck and Horatio Parker. He was organist (1893-1904) in churches in Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York. In the insurance business from 1898 to 1930, Ives was at the same time composing music that was advanced in style, anticipating some of the innovations of Schoenberg and Stravinsky, but not influencing the trend of music because most of his works were not published. They were little known until 1939, when performance of his second piano sonata, Concord (1911-15), won him wide recognition. In 1947 his Third Symphony was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. His works include symphonies, orchestral suites, sonatas, organ pieces, choral works, a great deal of chamber music, and about 150 songs. He often used American folk music in compositions evoking the spirit of various aspects of American life such as revival meetings and brass-band parades.
