Joseph Joachim (1831 – 1907) Joseph Joachim was born on June 28th, 1831, in Kittsee, near Pressburg (Austria-Hungary) , the son of a Jewish merchant family. In 1833, the family moved to Budapest, where the child was given his first violin lessons by the Polish concert master of the Pest Royal Opera. His talents were immediately apparent and it became clear that music was to be his future. At the age of seven, Joachim was sent to Vienna, where he studied with Joseph Böhm. He played in Joseph Hellmesberger’s »Children’s Quartett«, attended the Vienna Conservatory and finished his studies at the tender age of twelve. The following years in Leipzig, where Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy became his mentor and role-model, formed Joachim’s artistic personality. Mendelssohn saw to it that his pupil was instructed not only on the violin but also in the humanities and in the art of composition. He took Joachim to London, where the latter first performed Beethoven’s violin concerto to wide critical acclaim. Mendelssohn’s extensive concept of art and the artistic personality provided the young violinist and composer clear orientation in both his musical and personal development. Joseph Joachim was 16 years old when Mendelssohn suddenly died. The loss of his revered mentor devastated him, and the subsequent period was a difficult one. In 1849 he went to Weimar, where he met Liszt and Wagner, became concert master and composed. Here, his determination to dedicate himself to Mendelssohn’s musical ideals grew.

At thirteen he took London by storm, a city he was to visit frequently in the following years. He was later to form a particular friendship with Brahms who acted as his accompanist. The benefits were mutual, Joachim advising Brahms on violin technique when he composed his Violin Concerto. Joachim's advocacy of Beethoven's Violin Concerto was also responsible for establishing the work in the standard repertoire. Born in the part of the world we now know as Slovakia, Joseph Joachim's immense talents as a violinist were noted at the age of six, and he made his public debut at the age of eight. That year he was sent to study in Vienna, entering the Leipzig Conservatory at the age of twelve. He was guided through a general music education by Mendelssohn, and during his first year made his Leipzig concert debut with Clara Schumann and Mendelssohn. Reports on his playing have at times been in conflict. In his later years he became particularly interested in teaching, devoting much of his life from 1868 to the Hochschule in Berlin. As a conductor he was also admired, and it was under his baton that the First Symphony by Brahms was introduced to England. As a composer he learnt much from Mendelssohn, though time prevented more than a modest catalogue of works, though he added to his opus through much of his life.

Böhm. Hij was een van de grootste violisten van zijn generatie, nauw bevriend met Mendelssohn, Brahms en Liszt, hoewel hij zich in artistiek opzicht geleidelijk aan steeds meer verwijderde van Liszts 'Neu-Deutsche' school en een toegewijd aanhanger werd van de meer conventionele kring rond Brahms. Hij was primarius van het vermaarde Joachimkwartet , dat hij in 1869 oprichtte en dat vooral bekendheid genoot als vertolker van Beethovens strijkkwartetten. Tevens was hij voorzitter van de stichting 'Beethovenhuis' te Bonn en organisator van de Bonnse Beethovenfeesten. Ook als componist deed Joachim van zich spreken: hij liet o.a. 3 vioolconcerten na, korte werken voor viool en orkest, muziek voor viool en piano en enkele orkestwerken. home
