Introduction Perhaps a native of the Vermandois region of Picardy, he was a singer at Milan Cathedral in 1459, remaining there until December 1472. By July 1474 he was one of the 'cantori di capella' in the chapel of Galeazzo Maria Sforza. Between 1476 and 1504 he passed into the service of Cardinal Ascanio Sforza, whom he probably accompanied in Rome in 1484. His name first appears among the papal chapel choir in 1486 and recurs sporadically; he had left the choir by 1501. In this Italian period Josquin reached artistic maturity. He then went to France (he may also have done so while at the papal chapel) and probably served Louis XII's court. Although he may have had connections with the Ferrara court (through the Sforzas) in the 1480s and 1490s, no formal relationship with the court is known before 1503 when, for a year, he was maestro di cappella Josquin's works gradually became known throughout western Europe and were regarded as models by many composers and theorists. Petrucci's three books of his masses (1502-14) reflect contemporary esteem, as does Attaingnant's collection of his

Josquin's mastery of every important musical genre of his time is evidenced by his surviving works, which include 19 masses, about 100 motets, some 70 French chansons, and a handful of instrumental pieces and Italian frottole (part songs). These were published widely both during his lifetime and long after his death. His musical style was the product of two cultures: the north, where he was born and educated and to which he later returned and the south, where he reached artistic maturity and spent many of the most productive years of his life. The techniques and styles of the two regions coexist in his music, and he had recourse to them throughout his long career.
In many of his works the contrapuntal artifices of the Franco-Netherlanders and the chordal, harmonically controlled style of the Italians are fused into a rich and expressive musical language that has as its primary goal the perfect union of words and music. In his motets, melodic imitation is the prevailing technique. Above all, the motets show highly expressive treatment of text, reflecting Josquin's deep religious conviction as well as the age's new humanistic attention to personal expression. To his secular compositions, his polyphonic (multivoiced) chansons, he applied a range of techniques, from simple and chordal to highly imitative. These works set a standard for composers of the later Renaissance that was often emulated but never surpassed.

Biography
Josquin Desprez (c.1440/55-1521) is widely regarded as one of the finest and most influential composers in the history of Western music. The stylistic traits of his music, both in contrapuntal technique and in text-setting, gave the defining direction to the High Renaissance and with it the course of music history as a whole. Not only was Josquin admired by Martin Luther as the greatest of composers, but his music was distributed throughout Europe and especially in Germany for decades after his death. The clear textures and text declamation which Josquin employed set the stage not only for the next developments of technical harmony, but for the clarity and conciseness demanded by the Counter-Reformation of Palestrina et al. as well. Josquin's output displays a rare combination of innovation and accomplished technical mastery, and has retained for him a position as the most prominent composer of the early sixteenth century, perhaps the high point of Western music as a whole. Although he spent a substantial portion of his career in Italy, Josquin evidently received his training in the Northern Franco-Flemish style before then, perhaps at the feet of

Click here for audio of Episode 1166. Today, academic detectives look for the real Josquin. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. F or my money, the greatest composer who ever lived was the somewhat shadowy figure of Josquin Desprez. Josquin defined the new music of the Renaissance. You've probably heard his masses. You've surely heard his little choral piece El Grillo the one that makes such a fine imitation of a cricket. When I was in graduate school, musicologists were waging holy wars with one another over Josquin's particulars. Today a few of those particulars are in pretty good order. We know Josquin was born in the northern part of France around 1440. That rough date comes from the 1459 records of a Milan cathedral which identify him as "Jodocho de frantia biscantori." "Jodocho de frantia" was an Italian version of his name. "Biscantori" meant a young adult singer. The spelling of his name changes from place to place and time to time. Historians finally saw that Josquin himself told us how he wanted his name spelled in a five-voice motet

Created by Mike Passaris on Friday the 13th of February, 1998.
Josquin's Life In the province of Hainaut, Belgium around 1440, Josquin Desprez was born. His first dominant position he held was to become choirmaster to Duke Ercole I of Ferrara. This is the time where he began to write most of his music. He received musical training at Cambrai, France and was now putting it to good use. He wrote motets, chansons, masses, a handful of instrumental pieces, and Italian frottole's (part song's). In April of 1505, at the duke's death, Josquin became provost of the collegiate church of Notre Dame in Conde. He lived the rest of his life there until he died at Conde-sur-l'Escaut on August 27, 1521. Motets Josquin wrote 100 motets throughout his lifetime. In 49 of the motets he used a plainsong melody. His masses and early motets were essentially in four parts, he did write five and six part motets as well, but they were less common. One early four part motet Victimae paschali laudes (1502) exemplifies his early style with dense texture and lack of imitation. His early motets were very plain with not much rhythmic movement. As he wrote more and more, Josquin developed a greater maturity in his music. The more he wrote the better each piece was. It is noticeable to the listener that each motet, for instance, becomes more involved and advanced. Homophony and imitative passages began to be recognized in his works an example being

A Flemish Renaissance composer, Josquin Desprez was born around 1440 in a town called Picardy, now a part of modern Belgium. Called the "Father of Musicians," Josquin dominated the art of music around 1500. Protestant revolutionary Martin Luther spoke of the composer’s worth: "He is the master of the notes. They have to do as he bids them; other composers have to do as the notes will" (Machlis and Forney 104). Indeed, Josquin’s influence was profound and his music very effectively conveys the emotions it seeks to represent. Like many other Renaissance composers, Josquin’s intent was to keep a textual focus, and he built the music around the existing words. This forward-reaching age created a style of "High Renaissance." As a student of Renaissance composer Johannes Ockeghem Maestro di cappella motets , more than seventeen complete Masses, and over 70 secular vocal compositions. Both motets and Masses are examples of sacred vocal music. A motet is a choral work set to Latin text that uses polyphony . In polyphonic music, each voice has its own line and is independent of all other parts. A popular motet by Josquin dating from ca. 1476 is the famous choral work
