    Josquin Des Prez
    (c.1440 - 1521)
Josquin Des Prez was one of the most influential and widely regarded composers in the history of Western music, so famous that he is known merely by his first name. Josquin was apparently born in the Duchy of Burgundy, in modern Belgium. He spent a large portion of his middle years in various Italian cities as a highly sought master of music, and then retired to Conde (in Northeast France) late in his life. Josquin's extended sojourns in Italy allowed him not only to spread the Northern polyphonic style there, but to pick up some of the Southern vitality noticeable in many of his secular works. However, his extended works are always marked by a subtlety and serenity characteristic of the Franco-Flemish school. Josquin's masses include not only cantus firmus masses, such as the widely reknowned "Missa Pange Lingua," but also "parody" masses in which entire contrapuntal complexes are borrowed from an earlier source. His secular compositions are highly varied, from light songs called "frottola," to weightier french chansons such as the widely parodied "Milles Regretz," to the motet-chanson "Deploration on the death of Ockeghem /Nimphes des bois" and its gloomy textures. However, Josquin's motets contain some of his most varied and highly respected output, and it is here that his combination of piety, technical mastery, and individual discretion makes its surest showing. The motet "Ave Maria, gratia plena" is an especially crystalized example of his style, with its strict canonic opening and subsequent structural interplay. The massive motet "Miserere mei, Deus" shows Josquin at his most expressive and expansive, while the late motet "De profundis clamavi" shows him at his most serene. In all these settings, Josquin's primary concern is with the direct expression of text, and it is this humanistic quality that set the stage for the main portion of Renaissance and Baroque music.

Josquin, Desprez (born circa 1440; died Condé-sur-l'Escaut, 27 August 1521).
Perhaps a native of the Vermandois region of Picardy, he was a singer at Milan Cathedral in 1459, remaining there until December 1472. By July 1474 he was one of the 'cantori di capella' in the chapel of Galeazzo Maria Sforza. Between 1476 and 1504 he passed into the service of Cardinal Ascanio Sforza, whom he probably accompanied in Rome in 1484. His name first appears among the papal chapel choir in 1486 and recurs sporadically; he had left the choir by 1501. In this Italian period Josquin reached artistic maturity.
He then went to France (he may also have done so while at the papal chapel) and probably served Louis XII's court. Although he may have had connections with the Ferrara court (through the Sforzas) in the 1480s and 1490s, no formal relationship with the court is known before 1503 when, for a year, he was maestro di cappella there and the highest-paid singer in the chapel's history. There he probably wrote primarily masses and motets. An outbreak of plague in 1503 forced the court to leave Ferrara (Josquin's place was taken by Obrecht, who fell victim in 1505). He was in the north again, at Notre Dame at Condé, in 1504; he may have been connected with Margaret of Austria's court, 1508-11. He died in 1521. Several portraits survive, one attributed to Leonardo da Vinci.

    Desprèz, Josquin (c. 1440 - 1521)
Josquin, the descriptive part of whose name appears in various forms, occupies a leading position in the music of his generation. He represents the dominance of composers from Northern France and the Netherlands in this period, a school of music sometimes known as the Netherlands School, but influential throughout the Habsburg domains. Josquin was employed in Milan, at the papal chapel in Rome, by King Louis XII of France, at the court of the d'Estes in Ferrara and finally in his native region of Condé, where he died in 1521. Church Music Josquin wrote a large amount of church music. Of this eighteen Mass settings survive, including one using as a basic motif or cantus firmus the well known secular song L'homme armé; one honouring his Ferrara patron, Duke Ercole d'Este, Hercules Dux Ferrarie, its cantus firmus based on the musical transliteration of its title, and the Missa Pange lingua, which uses the Latin hymn of the same name. Josquin also wrote a large number of motets of equally faultless technique, the epitome of Renaissance musical achievement, among which may be mentioned Absalom, fili mi, Ave Maria gratia plena and his Stabat mater dolorosa. Secular Music Vocal music largely to French texts includes a lament for the death of the composer Ockeghem, Nymphes des bois; the chanson El grillo, with its imitation of the cricket, is a fine jeu d'esprit and the light-hearted Scaramella va alla guerra. Mille regretz is among the best known of a remarkable collection of works.
