Aaron Jay Kernis

Every composition by Aaron Jay Kernis bears the stamp of his emotional directness, multilayered response to poetic imagery, and love of fresh, bright vocal and instrumental textures. Kernis's invention is exuberant, wrote Andrew Porter in The New Yorker, capturing in four words the quality' that has propelled this young composer's music to a prominent place on orchestral, chamber, and recital programs throughout the United States and internationally. Using a diversity' of styles, ideas, and impressions to create music of expressive lyricism and engaging wit is one of Kernis's trademarks. Kernis has written works for a variety of forces, including the recent New Era Dance, commissioned for the 150th Anniversary of the New York Philharmonic and premiered by the Baltimore Symphony; the piano quartet Still Movement with Hymn

Truls Mørk performs the music of the contemporary American composer Aaron Jay Kernis. The richly expressive Colored Field (1994) is a meditation on human evil and the inefficacy of moral law; like the shorter Air it is heard here in a version for cello and orchestra inspired by and dedicated to Truls Mørk. To these two world première recordings is added Musica Celestis, a transcription for string orchestra of the slow movement of Kernis' first string quartet, itself inspired by the ethereal music of Hildegard of Bingen.
“Truls Mørk is an eloquent soloist, and the orchestral contribution and recording are outstanding”. (BBC Music Magazine)

I was fortunate enough to interview him several years ago, and I can say, based on our conversation, that composer Aaron Jay Kernis is a darn nice guy. Having laid my potential lack of objectivity on the table, please hear me when I claim that Kernis, not even 40 years old, already has several works to his credit that I rank among the finest in American classical music. This new disc of his music for violin and orchestra is not a disappointment, and it handily demonstrates the composer's comfort with a variety of styles and emotional intensities. It's one of the best new CDs of 1999. The Air for Violin originally was written in 1995 for Joshua Bell; Kernis later orchestrated it, and it is that version which is recorded here. Bell might have been the first performer, but Kernis was thinking of his wife, Evelyne Luest, when he wrote it - this sounds like a love song to me. Over the course of 11 minutes, Kernis spins out a very long line (a perfect match for Bell's talents), and while Aaron Copland's wide-open-spaces music often came to mind as I was hearing Air The other bookend is Lament and Prayer ; each one of those activities is assigned a movement of its own. Here, violinist Frank plays the role, not of an opponent to the orchestra, but of its spiritual leader, calming, commiserating, and inspiring. The rhythmic freedom and chanted character of the melodic material is derived from Hebrew cantillation, and anyone who knows the dark sounds that issue from an Orthodox synagogue during times of trouble and mourning will recognize these sounds again in

The Lark Quartet with Aaron Jay Kernis
On March 12, Ohio University will be honored as the location of the midwest premiere of Aaron Jay Kernis' String Quartet No.2: Music Instrumentalis, co-commissioned by Ohio University, New York's Merkin Hall, and the Schubert Club in Minnesota. The piece will be performed by the Lark Quartet at 8 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church. Kernis has received extensive recognition for his proven skill as a composer. His works are particularly noted for "using a diversity of styles, ideas, and impressions to create music of expressive lyricism and engaging wit." This quartet will mark the second time Aaron Kernis and the Lark Quartet have combined their talents to make great music. String Quartet ("musica celesis"), the first of Kernis' string quartets, was written for the Lark's Naumburg Chamber Music Award Concert in 1990. Astrid Schween, cellist with the quartet, explained, "We spent a lot of time rehearsing with him, getting the piece honed and polished for the concert. He didn't have much time in which to write the piece so he was faxing us bits and pieces of it as it became available. I think it was the most technically difficult piece that we've ever played." The Lark's second violinist Jennifer Orchard then commented that even though they continued to play this work for years, eventually even recording it on the Argo label, "It never got easier. [It was] fantastically difficult to play."

The Lark Quartet with Aaron Jay Kernis
by Molly Sheridan
On a date to be announced in Winter Quarter 1998, the Lark Quartet, the university's string quartet in residence, will perform Aaron Jay Kernis' String Quartet No.2:Music Instrumentalis. at the First United Methodist Church. As with Kernis' previous string quartet, this latest composition features a significant medieval influence. Kernis is one of the brightest stars among today's young American composers. His works are particularly noted for "using a diversity of styles, ideas, and impressions to create music of expressive lyricism and engaging wit." The quartet has expressed quite a bit of enthusiasm for this chance to perform Kernis' work. "He's a composer with real vision and originality and very much his own voice. He's very much in demand," noted Lark cellist Astrid Schween. Violinist Jennifer Orchard added, "We're privileged to work with him." Schween concluded by saying, "He's an unusually skilled composer. He really has command over whatever instrument he's writing for."

Aaron Jay Kernis It may be less well-known or prestigious than the Pulitzer but the University of Louisville’s Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition has certain charms of its own—not least of which is a $200,000 prize designed to free up the winner to focus on creating, rather than eating. Aaron Jay Kernis has now won both—a Pulitzer Prize in in 1998, for his String Quartet No. 2 (musica instrumentalis) – and now the 2002 Grawemeyer for Colored Field, a concerto written for cello and orchestra and premiered by the Minnesota Orchestra in 2000. At this time of worldwide reflection and the search for meaning in the wake of tragedy, the power of music is more important than ever," Kernis said. "Music can allow us to rediscover what is in deep inside of ourselves, free from the precision of language and the barrage of rhetoric, free from easy answers to impossible questions. Music allows us to discover a felt sense of the vast emotional terrain that is part of each of us." Kernis's evolution from self-taught child pianist to one of America's most honored composers has been quick and dramatic. A native of Philadelphia, the 41-year-old Kernis began his musical studies on the violin. He then began teaching himself piano at 12 and composition at 13. His formal music education includes studies at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the Manhattan and Yale schools of music. He has worked with a variety of composers, including Grawemeyer winners John Adams and Harrison Birtwistle. He first came to national attention in 1983 when the New York Philharmonic premiered his first orchestral work, "dream of the morning sky," at the 1983 Horizons Festival.
