ASV's Korngold series continues with a further concert of rarely-heard but glorious orchestral music, the second from Caspar Richter and the Bruckner Orchester Linz.
"..recording is full-bodied and projects these weighty scores with due clarity" (Gramophone) "...buy it with confidence" (BBC Music Magazine ***** review) "Warmly recommended." (Fanfare) and Violin Music on - plus the superb debut disc from Caspar Richter and the Bruckner Orchester Linz ( ), a unique programme of richly romantic, yet rarely-heard, orchestral scores from 1908 (!) to 1928. Richter's second volume of Korngold's orchestral works spans his entire career from his very first attempt at orchestration (Fairytale Pictures) to his last published work (Straussiana). The Fairytale Pictures are a delightful set of miniatures composed for piano in 1910 - when Korngold was just 13! His orchestral version was even performed until 1997. He scored a major success with his first original orchestral work, the Schauspiel Overture of a year later (it was played at the Proms when its creator was still only 15). Korngold was a born opera composer and his creative genius was shown to the full in his teenage opera Violanta, an astonishing renaissance tragedy, from which we hear the overture and whirling carnival music.

Erich Wolfgang Korngold (1897-1957) from Vienna to Hollywood
From the cinematic viewpoint, the careers of Max Steiner Franz Waxman and Erich Wolfgang Korngold seem to have parallels in that they all moved to Hollywood from a traditional classical musical education in Europe. Out of this group, though, Korngold was by far the most promising classical composer. His father Julius was a music critic in Vienna and the young Erich Wolfgang was a precocious child prodigy impressing composers of the stature of Gustav Mahler Richard Strauss and Giacomo Puccini with his composition skills at age 9. He then studied under Zemlinsky among others. By the early 30s, Korngold was firmly on the map as a classical composer of note with a number of operas in the grand Wagnerian style established in the repertoire, and Korngold himself was professor at the Vienna State Academy of Music. However at this time anti-Semitism was on the increase in Europe, and therefore Korngold readily accepted an invitation from director Max Reinhardt to move to Hollywood initially to adapt Mendelssohn 's "A Midsummer Night's Dream".

Erich Wolfgang Korngold Biographies of film composers abound with tales of precocious children, but none is more amazing than that of Erich Korngold. He was born in 1897, the son of Julius Korngold, Vienna's leading music critic. At the age of 11 he had already composed for piano a ballet, Der Schneemann (The Snowman); his teacher, Alexander Zemlinsky, orchestrated it, and it was premiered at the Viennese Court Opera in a command performance for the Emperor, Franz Josef, creating a sensation. A year later came a Piano Trio, of which Richard Strauss said (since I am unable to quote him verbatim, I omit quotation marks), I have recently heard a Piano Trio of exceptional brilliance and maturity. But more impressive than the talent displayed by the composer is the fact that he is a twelve year old boy. When Gustav Mahler heard the lad play some of his music he exclaimed, "A genius ... a genius!" And Giacomo Puccini said of him, "The boy has so much talent that he could easily give us some and still have enough left for himself." He was only 16 when he composed his two short operas, The

ERICH WOLFGANG KORNGOLD
Born in Brünn (then part of Austria, now Brno, Czech Republic), the 29th of May 1897, son of music critic Julius Korngold, unveil soon his predisposition and musical hability, both as composer and performer. At five years old he has lessons of piano and musical theory, and two years later composed his first work. In June 1906 performs his cantata Gold in front of an amazed Gustav Mahler, whom recommended him as pupil to his friend, and also composer, Alexander von Zemlinsky. His first published score is the Trio op.1 , which Universal Edition edits in 1910. Prestigious conductor Felix von Weingartner premiered, in 1913, his spectacular Sinfonietta op.5 , a score which shows his best symphonic and structural qualities; in fully popular and critical uprising, Korngold composed his first opera, Der Ring des Polykrates op.7 between 1913 and 1914; the premiere, in a double program with Violanta op.8 , takes place the 28th of March 1916, under the baton of Bruno Walter. The success convince him to compose Die Tote Stadt op.12
