A few years before the French Revolution brought its thorough restructuring of European society in the Nineteenth Century, Friedrich Daniel Rudolph Kuhlau was born in the little town of Uelzen in North Germany, halfway between Hamburg and Hanover, on September 11, 1786. He belonged to one of many families of musicians in those days. His father, grandfather, and uncle were all military musicians (oboists), and the last-mentioned later became organist in Ålborg in Denmark. We know very little about Kuhlau's childhood and youth. The family, with three sons and two daughters, was poor, and the career of the father caused many relocations to other North German towns.
When Kuhlau was about seven years old the family settled in Lüneburg, and it was here in the beginning of 1796 that he met with an accident, a fall in the slippery street at wintertime by which he lost his right eye. The most common version of how this happened is that broken pieces from a bottle he carried with him in order to buy something for his mother came into the eye, another is that he fell while carrying the choral book to the organist of the town in whose church he was singing and whose favorite he was. During a long time in bed, a piano was placed nearby, and this promoted an interest in music that may have been there before according to the version of singing in the church and his telling his older sister Amalie that he was then copying out some beautiful, new arias for her. When asked if the accident was not a great misfortune, he answered: "No, that was good, otherwise I would not have been a musician."

Friedrich Daniel Rudolf Kuhlau
Friedrich Daniel Rudolf Kuhlau was born at Uelzen, near Hannover, Germany on September 11, 1786. As a seven year old boy, Kuhlau lost the ability to see in his right eye as the result of an accident. His father, grandfather, and uncle were military oboists, and even though Kuhlau was born to a poor family, his parents managed to pay for pianoforte lessons at which he excelled in a short time. He and his family subsequently moved with his father's military regiment to Lüneburg and then to Brunswick where he attended a singing school and continued his instruction in piano. From Brunswick, upon completion of his schooling at age 14, Kuhlau went to Hamburg where he studied theory and composition with C.F.G. Schwencke, the Kantor of Hamburg's Catherinenkirche. Schwencke had been a student of both Marpurg and Kirnberger. Kuhlau's first compositions were published for flute and pianoforte while studying in Hamburg, and from 1804 he regularly gave public piano recitals. In 1810, Hamburg was annexed into the French Empire, and Kuhlau fled to Copenhagen to escape conscription into Napoleon's Army. During this time, the Danish court and the public at large welcomed foreign musicians into their midst, and Kuhlau began to earn a living in his new homeland as a pianist and composer. In January 1811, he gave a concert at the Royal Theater, performing among other works his C Major
