Co-founder of New York's legendary new music festival, Bang on a Can, Lang's distinct sound fuses the tradition of classical music with urban aggressivess, where melodies accompanied by noise and subtle harmonies are pulled apart by pounding rhythms. Lang was born in Los Angeles in 1957 and holds degrees from Stanford University and the University of Iowa, receiving his doctorate from the Yale School of Music in 1989. Lang has been commissioned by such organizations as the Santa Fe Opera, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the BBC Singers, and the American Composers Orchestra. His works are performed with regularity throughout the world by such organizations as the Kronos Quartet, the New York Philharmonic, Icebreaker, Piano Circus and the Netherlands Wind Ensemble: at the Almeida, Holland, Berlin, Tanglewood and Aspen Music Festivals; in theater productions In New York, San Francisco and London, and In the choreography of Twyla Tharp, Susan Marshall, La La La Human Steps and The Alvin Alley Company. Home Artistic Directors Julia Wolfe David Lang , and Michael Gordon ... co-artistic directors and founders, started Bang on a Can in 1987. Since that time they have presented more than one hundred and fifty musical events in New York City, ranging from a tribute to Morton Feldman to the only New York performances of Harry Partch's music on original instruments since Partch's death, to the commissioning and premiere of Bun-Ching Lam's Child God an opera accompanied by the Yueh Lun Shadow Puppet Theater, to the presentation of a "comic book opera" based on the cartoons and libretto of comic book artist Ben Katchor, to twelve Bang on a Can Marathons. They have founded an astonishingly successful chamber ensemble, the Bang on a Can All-Stars , and an orchestra, SPIT Orchestra For seven years, Gordon, Lang and Wolfe were solely responsible for all administration: producing concerts, producing records, presenting performers, designing and hosting residencies, commissioning, creating special projects, arranging tours, doing marketing and publicity and fundraising. During these seven years Bang on a Can grew from a one-day event on New York's Lower East Side to a year-round organization with a national and international reputation. David Lang Disappearance The disappearance of David Lang cause quite a stir in the local community. At the spot where David disappeared there was a 15 foot circle. The circle continued to mark the spot where the vanishing took place Tall Tale Theories Several theories abound as to what really happened. Most interesting are theories that the whole incident is a fable, passed down from generation to generation, until it grew into the tale we know today. Most of the fable theories are probably based upon earlier articles in FATE and Fortean Times. Some believe that a similar incident occurred in July 1854 at a plantation near Selma, Alabama. A man named Orion Williamson disappeared in a manner similar to David Lang (dead grass circles, voices from nowhere, etc.).
