"More and more I have become convinced that one of the noblest things you can do in a piece of 'serious' music is to allow for an experience that can't happen in your everyday life. My piece is about the struggle to create beauty. A single very consonant chord falls slowly over the course of forty minutes. That is the piece. Every aspect of the piece is on display, however magnified, examined, amplified, prolonged. The soloist's notes are impossibly long, requiring frequent drop-outs for breath and for rest. The players are all instructed to play as quietly as possible, and then are amplified at high volume, in order to make their restraint an issue of the piece. Four percussionists scrape pieces of junk metal from start to finish, as if to accompany the consonance of the chords with sounds of dirt and decay." Col. David Lang Col. David Lang was the Commander of the 8th Florida Infantry Regiment. Due to the illness of Florida Brigade commander Brig. Gen. E. A. Perry with typhoid fever, Lang commanded the Florida Brigade during the Battle of Gettysburg. Born in Camden County, Georgia, Lang had graduated from the Georgia Military Institute in 1857. He had initially enlisted in the 1st Florida Infantry as a private. As a sergeant in 1862, Lang raised Company C of the 8th Florida Infantry and was elected its captain. He became colonel of the 8th on 30 April 1863. At Gettysburg, the Florida Brigade spent the first day (1 July 1863) getting to the site of the battle. On the second day of the battle, the Florida Brigade which at that time had an approximate strength of 750 men sustained 300 (40%) casualties while assaulting Union positions on Cemetery Ridge. On 3 July 1863 the Florida Brigade accompanied Wilcox's Brigade in a second assault of Cemetery Ridge behind and in support of Pickett's assault. The Florida Brigade sustained an additional 20% casualties, bringing its total losses in the Battle of Gettysburg to 450 men (60%). During the course of the Battle of Gettysburg, all of the regiments of the brigade except the 5th Florida Infantry lost their colors... and the 5th Florida's colors were saved on 3 July only by a soldier's expedient of removing them from the staff and stuffing them inside of his shirt. Home Artistic Directors Julia Wolfe David Lang , and Michael Gordon ... co-artistic directors and founders, started Bang on a Can in 1987. Since that time they have presented more than one hundred and fifty musical events in New York City, ranging from a tribute to Morton Feldman to the only New York performances of Harry Partch's music on original instruments since Partch's death, to the commissioning and premiere of Bun-Ching Lam's Child God an opera accompanied by the Yueh Lun Shadow Puppet Theater, to the presentation of a "comic book opera" based on the cartoons and libretto of comic book artist Ben Katchor, to twelve Bang on a Can Marathons. They have founded an astonishingly successful chamber ensemble, the Bang on a Can All-Stars , and an orchestra, SPIT Orchestra For seven years, Gordon, Lang and Wolfe were solely responsible for all administration: producing concerts, producing records, presenting performers, designing and hosting residencies, commissioning, creating special projects, arranging tours, doing marketing and publicity and fundraising. During these seven years Bang on a Can grew from a one-day event on New York's Lower East Side to a year-round organization with a national and international reputation. Now with an office staff of four and major international partnerships, Bang on a Can has continued to grow as a major force in the presentation of new music, with multiple touring productions and a renowned house ensemble.

On that count, the press release that accompanies Invincible Summer is, for once, spot on. " That voice", as the blurb has it, is one of the most delicious sounds in pop. Rich as Belgian chocolate and just as moreish, it more or less guarantees that any record by KD Lang (or "kd lang", as she prefers) is worth listening to, however fleetingly. It's not a stretch to suggest that Lang could sing the Argos catalogue and make it sound like the last song on earth. The problem in the past has been that there's all too often been little more than the voice worth tuning in for, as Lang's last two sets have been less than essential. 1995's All You Can Eat was a deeply flawed follow-up to the wonderful Ingenue of three years earlier. And 1997's Drag , a patchy concept album of sorts featuring 12 covers of songs about cigarettes, was interesting chiefly for the fact that Lang herself has never been a smoker.
