April 1870 in Komorn (Ungarn) Foto: Deutsches Historisches Museum Der österreichische Komponist prägte nach seinem Welterfolg "Die lustige Witwe" (Wien 1905) in entscheidender Weise die Geschichte der modernen Operette in diesem Jahrhundert mit. Vor allem in den zwanziger Jahren erwies sich mit Operetten wie "Paganini" (1925), "Der Zarewitsch" (1927), "Friederike" (1928, 1932 auch als Film), "Das Land des Lächelns" (1929) und "Schön ist die Welt" (1930) die Nähe seines Stils zum Zeitgeist. Franz Lehàr Everything you need to know about this composer Lehàr was born in 1870 in Hungary. Being born into a musical home (his father was a military bandmaster and composer), Franz learned to play the violin and piano before he could read or write. His mother encouraged free improvisation on the piano, and by the age of eleven, Franz had composed his first lied . He then attended the conservatory of Prague for six years. In 1888, Franz began his military service in the band of the infantry regiment conducted by his father and in 1899 he was transferred to Vienna as a bandmaster. In 1902, he gave up the military for good and received the position of musical director at Vienna's Theater an der Wien. There he met Viktor Leon, a noted librettist and one of the most important and successful personalities of the Viennese operetta scene. Already a well-known character around Vienna, Lehàr announced his new work to be produced for the Theater an der Wien in 1905 as

Franz Lehar est né à Komarom (Autriche-Hongrie), actuellement Komarno (Slovaquie), le 30 avril 1870... dans une garnison, où son père, chef de musique militaire, était affecté. On raconte que ce dernier, qui venait de Moravie, avait pour ancêtre un certain marquis de La Harde, rescapé de l'armée napoléonienne. Vers1800, très misérable, il aurait échoué en Moravie où une jeune paysanne l'aurait recueilli par pitié. Et il l'aurait peu après épousée. Ses descendants oublièrent le marquisat, devinrent de simples agriculteurs et le nom se transforma en Lehar. Pourquoi pas! Lehar père changeait souvent de garnison et sa progéniture se retrouva dans différentes villes de l'Empire austro-hongrois où il s'imprégna de la musique folklorique des régions où il faisait escale. Mais son instruction risquait d'en pâtir. Franz fut donc mis en pension à Budapest, puis en Moravie. Là, à l'âge de 12 ans, il se décide déjà pour la carrière musicale. Le père

As I am an operetta lover, I got the CD on Saturday and listened to it throughout the weekend.
