The playentitled INFINITY BREATHESis opening in Berkeley, CA in December and should be an exciting experience. I have one straightforward question I have yet to find the answer to, and hopefully someone can help me: I'm looking for Anatol Liadov's patronymic name. Does anyone know it or know where I can find it? If so, please respond to my e-mail addressyuvster@yahoo.com. Anatol Konstantinovich Liadov Life Works Photo Gallery Home Page Anatol Liadov Life The son of a conductor at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, Anatol Lyadov joined the Conservatoire where he excelled at the piano. For a short time he studied composition with Rimsky-Korsakov and later he became a teacher of theory and then of counterpoint. He was associated with Balakirev and subsequently became a member of Belyayev's circle, helping, in particular, in the establishment of the publishing-house that Belyayev established for Russian composers. Lyadov was a thoroughly competent musician, conductor and composer, but did not apply himself consistently to work. His failure to produce a commissioned score for the Dyagilev ballet, in Paris in 1910, allowed Stravinsky , one of his pupils, to win acclaim for his own composition. Anatol Liadov Works
The best known orchestral compositions by Lyadov are the descriptive Russian fairy-tale pieces Kikimora, Baba-Yaga and Volshebnoye ozero (The Enchanted Lake). MIDI FILE - The Music Box His last orchestral work was the symphonic poem Skorbnaya pesn (Nénie).

Music of Anatol Liadov Taken from the liner notes of EMI ASD 2801, Music of Liadov, Yevgenvy Svetlanov, conducting the USSR State Symphony Orchestra Anatol Liadov was born in St. Petersberg on 11th May 1855 into a highly musical family. His grandfather had been a professional musician, three uncles were musicians, and his father was a conductor at the Maryinsky (now Kirov) Theatre. After initial musical studies with his father, Liadov joined Rimsky-Korsakov's composition class at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. It is suggested that he failed the class due to lack of application; be that as it may, his eventual success at the Conservatory was such that a year after completing his course he was appointed to the teaching staff as and soon became a full professor. Liadov's ability was recognized in the highest circles, and he was appointed to a Commission set up by the Imperial Geographical Society to research into the folk-songs of various regions. Liadov's reputation for indolence he completed few large-scale works rests largely upon his involvement with Diaghilev's plans for a ballet based on the "Firebird" legend. The impresario originally commissioned a score from Liadov, but on the composer's failure to complete the work in time he placed the commission in the hands of another of Rimsky-Korsakov's pupils, a Stravinsky. It is true that Liadov composed slowly, but with great attention to detail. His slow and meticulous approach to his work, together with the immense amount of time taken up by his teaching and research, necessarily limited the number of works he was able to complete successfully. It is said too that as the years passed by and he failed to achieve the recognition granted to some of his contemporaries, Liadov became disillusioned and disinclined to compose. He died near Novgorod in 1914.

He was a thoroughly competent musician, conductor and composer, but did not apply himself consistently to work. His failure to supply music for the Dyagilev ballet in Paris in 1910 allowed Stravinsky his first chance with the Ballets russes. His compositions are characteristic of the period in Russian nationalism, when nationalism was joined with technical competence inculcated at the Conservatories. He was commissioned in 1910 by Sergei Diaghilev, to compose the score of a new ballet for the glittering Paris season of the Ballets Russes, based on the Russian fairy-tale, The Firebird. When he failed to deliver, Liadov opened the way for a younger composer, Igor Stravinsky, whose career was launched in spectacular fashion. Liadov was a particularly gifted musician, however; and as a composer, he created music of beautiful refinement and great sophistication. If his reputation for idleness cannot be denied - it was for this reason, as a young man, that he was expelled from Rimsky-Korsakov's composition classes - he did still leave a significant body of work. There were more than sixty published compositions, in fact, many of which remain in the repertory today. This Naxos reissue (from a Marco Polo disc available during the 1980s) is the more welcome for allowing a proper assessment of Liadov's achievement. For the featured repertoire covers a wide range of music, particularly in those exotic orchestral scores which show the composer at his best. While it is true that Liadov was most successful as a miniaturist, we should also remember that an orchestral piece lasting six or seven minutes - as most of these do - is not all that miniature. After all, that is the same length as many a symphonic movement.
