67. Music In The Soviet Union, 1917-1960
Examination of the life and works of various composers in light of ideology and culture. Essay by Category Arts Music Composers By Region Europe Russian...... Korsakov. liadov, anatol Constantinovich (1855?) Taneyev, Serge Ivanovich(1856-1915), contemporary of Rimsky-Korsakov. Ippolitov

Music in the Soviet Union
Written by Darrel Tidaback The history of the twentieth century most certainly will be viewed as a history of conflict. Nowhere is this more evident that in the arena of ideological conflict, and nowhere is this ideological conflict more evident than between the Soviet Union and the United States. It may be, for the latter half of the twentieth century in particular, that the conflict between these two powers and their respective allies will be how historians define our century. The ideological conflict between communism and capitalism took its toll in virtually every sphere in both camps: politics, economics, personal life, religion, the family, education, and, most certainly, in the arts. The struggle drained the resources, both mental and physical, of both powers. In the end, the United States triumphed only by spending the Soviet Union into the ground, bankrupting the latter, and inflicting serious damage upon itself, damage that will take years of economic and political re-organizing to repair. In the arts, the two opposing systems yielded two somewhat different outcomes. The United States, with its constitutionally guaranteed right of freedom of expression, theoretically allowed all art to flourish. However, because of the forces of the marketplace, very few works which could not be expected to make a profit for a publisher, gallery, concert hall, or recording company, would ever make their way to an audience. In the Soviet Union, which also had a constitutionally guaranteed right of freedom of expression, the government controlled all institutions of higher learning, all publishing, all television and radio broadcasting, all recording, and all musical and theatrical performances, thereby effectively limiting what was expressed and what was experienced by the public. Nevertheless, in both spheres, excellent art music was produced throughout the century.

Mikhail Glinka
Born June 1, 1804 Novospasskoye, Russia
Died February 15, 1857 Berlin, Germany
Russlan and Ludmilla: Overture
Glinka's opera Russlan and Ludmilla is based on a charming and satirical fairy tale by Alexander Pushkin. He completed the score in April, 1842 after working on it sporadically for six years. Its music is drawn largely from Russian folk music. Many misfortunes befell the work's premiere which took place on December 9, 1842. The show was hissed by the audience, and the critics gave it bad reviews. During Glinka's lifetime, and for years afterward, audiences did not appreciate the work. Today Russlan and Ludmilla is recognized to be the composer's masterpiece. The work was a pioneer of Russian nationalism and in a single stroke cast the style of modern Russian music. Glinka's complex and detailed melodies, harmonies, rhythms, form, instrumentation and style all became the musical language which Russian composers would speak for the next hundred years. The Overture to Russlan and Ludmilla is now in the standard concert repertoire of bands and orchestras. Its contrapuntal effects and rushing scale passages are excitingly reminiscent of Mozart and Weber.

Woodwind Quintet Music: A Selected Listing for the Public School Director by Dan Duncan, Eastern Kentucky University Brian's Double Reed Page, www.uky.edu/~moses/bdrp This listing of music has been selected as having some use for the public school teachers and students at the Middle and High School levels. The inclusion of a composition on this list does not mean that it is appropriate for every school situation nor does it mean that the entire composition is within the grasp of the average public school student. In many instances, a composition that is very difficult overall has one or two movements that can be reasonably played by a fairly young group.
Contents
We realize that not all school systems have double reed and French horn students who are able to participate in woodwind quintets and even schools who do not possess the instruments. With this in mind, some of the publications are provided with a bass clarinet part which can play the bassoon line and many oboe parts can be played by a flute player or transposed for a clarinet. Finally, it is possible that some French horn parts might fit an alto saxophone or an alto clarinet after transposition. We would hope that the desire to learn and perform this music might then stimulate the development of all public school students and encourage some to take on the challenge of learning double reeds or horn.

PROGRAM NOTES© James R. C. Adams An Orchestra Primer Theron Kirk th C.) Theron Kirk is an American composer, currently Chairman of the Department of Music at San Antonio College, in Texas. He has published works in a wide variety of forms, including choral and chamber music, operas and symphonies. A number of composers have been attracted to the idea of a musical work designed to introduce the instruments of the orchestra to children. One of the most famous of such works is Benjamin Britten s A Young Person s Guide to the Orchestra . Another popular example is An Orchestra Primer , by Theron Kirk. In both works, the instruments are shown off one by one, and finally, together, in an example of a basic musical form. Benjamin Britten ended his work with a fugue, a form developed in the Baroque era. Kirk ends his with a sonata allegro, hallmark of the Classical period. The sonata allegro is the essential form of the classical symphony, the concerto, chamber music such as quartets and trios, and, of course, the sonata, itself. The first movement of all these is traditionally in the sonata allegro form, hence its choice by Kirk as an ideal way of showing off the orchestra. Put very simply, the
