E-Mail to Ata Tak Lukas Ligeti BETA FOLY This CD, the first of the group Beta Foly, is the documentation of a meeting in which the computer encounters the djembè, the balafon, the bolon, and others to create a fusion of contemporary ideas and ancestral traditions, and thus to give birth to the Afro N`Kuman style of Beta Foly. Beta Foly What began as a music workshop and cultural exchange involving African and Western musicians has developed over three years into a band playing exciting new music built on African styles that interact with concepts from other parts of the world and the latest technologies in innovative ways. Quite a few African-Western collaborations take place these days, but no other has produced the results heard on this recording. Amadou Leye M`Baye, Monimba, Lassiné Koné Composer-drummer Lukas Ligeti and his project partner, seminal German new wave musician Kurt Dahlke, brought the latest MIDI equipment and other computerized and electronic gear, as well as Ligeti`s main instrument, the trap drum set, to see what would happen when traditional African musicians began stirring those electronic spices into the cross-cultural musical stew. The Africans were as eager to explore the new territory as Ligeti and Dahlke were to work with traditional artists. Lukas Ligeti The computers and samplers were used to treat sounds and forms in ways not usually associated with world music, and to facilitate polymetric ensemble interplay. But far more than a product of any technology, the music was the result of all participating artists inspiring each other, with Ligeti`s breakthrough approach to polymetric drumming (listen to "L`Escalier du temps","Langage en dessin", and Village dans 8 pays") serving as a catalyst for musical creativity with his West African partners. He tuned into their styles, with intoducing his own compositional approach, which in itself is based on an openness for the most unusual forms of inspiration.

Manfred Stahnke talks to Canzona Interview September 1990, Wellington On the avant-garde situation, on Ligeti, on Stahnke, on general aesthetics Between the 3rd and 16th of September the German composer Manfred Stahnke visited New Zealand. His tour was sponsored primarily by the Goethe Institute of what was (just) still West Germany, with support both from the QEII Arts Council and the music departments in the universities of Otago, Canterbury, Auckland and Victoria. At the universities Stahnke lectured, gave seminars on various topics, held discussions with New Zealand composers and composition students, as well as introducing his own music and playing selections of it. Manfred Stahnke (39) lives in Hamburg, where he also did most of his musical training, including several years under Gyoergy Ligeti. Im Rahmen des Kulturaustausches zwischen Oesterreich und Zimbabwe begleiten wir die Musiker und Komponisten Peter Androsch, Keith Goddard, Klaus Hollinetz, Lukas Ligeti und Werner Puntigam auf einer Reise nach Siachilaba, einer kleinen Siedlung der Tonga im Nordwesten Zimbabwes. Kurz darauf reist die Tonga-Musikgruppe Simonga nach Oesterreich, um an einer einwoechigen Wanderung ueber das Tote Gebirge teilzunehmen. Das Besondere des mehrjaehrigen Tonga-Projektes ist, dass die Botschaften zwischen den Kulturen Oesterreichs und Zimbabwes durch Kuenstler und durch nichtsprachliche Mittel wie Musik und Film vermittelt werden und dass die Begegnung mit Anderem, mit Fremdem, vor allem auch die Begegnung mit sich selbst meint. Kaiser’s nervous, choppy playing on guitar and bass sounds like that of a virtuoso whose Alzheimer’s causes him to struggle to find the right notes. His thin tone and idiosyncratic phrasing on guitar sound a lot like Derek Bailey, while his skittering, high-end electric bass runs sound like a prog musician trying his hand (and succeeding) at playing free jazz. Ligeti, a drummer and the son of the brilliant avant-garde composer Györgi, plays more insistently and propulsively than most free improv drummers would, while pianist Goodman mostly offers dense, busy free playing that recalls Cecil Taylor. The ensemble runs into problems when Goodman starts plucking the strings on the inside of his instrument, as he does on the guitar/piano feature “Riddled.” Goodman and Kaiser’s playing on this track is pointillistic and emotionally opaque—their improvising on the rest of the record is strong enough to convince me that the emperor’s probably wearing clothes, but the logic of this track is very difficult for me to follow. This may be my problem, not theirs, but the more pointillistic moments on
