In the 1990s, pieces such as Marea (1990), the Piano Concerto Corrente Corrente II (1992) and Coyote Blues (1993) have been less concerned with the use of electronics (although the composer still uses computers as a compositional aid) and show Lindberg putting a stronger emphasis on the harmonic structure of his music. June 1994 saw the triumphant premiere in Tokyo of the major new orchestral work Aura - in memoriam Witold Lutoslawski , a commission from the Suntory International Program for Music Composition, and in June 1995 his Arena was the test piece for the first International Sibelius Conductor's Competition in Helsinki. In 1995 he was the featured composer at the Aldeburgh Festival and in 1996 he was Artistic Director of the South Bank Centre's Meltdown Festival. All the works were written during the 1980s, and trace Lindberg's development from the young pretender of such pungent chamber works as ... de Tartuffe je crois and Linea d'ombra , to the wonderfully sonorous soundscape of Kinetics the blueprint for Lindberg's later orchestral music. Kraft (1985) remains his most notorious work, but if you want to hear how to make imaginative sense out of a 70-note chord, then the opening minutes are for you. In Action-Situation-Signification , the references to literary theory won't hamper your enjoyment of the vivid interactive writingquizzical and impulsive, but never dull. The remaining works are a qualitatively mixed bag, but Zona (1983) shows Lindberg's understanding of instrumental sound at its keenist, not least the vibrant cello playing of Anssi Karttunen. A fascinating and rewarding set.

Mr. Lindberg’s music is perhaps unique among postwar composers in its incorporation of a wide variety of twentieth century techniques—serialism, electronics, pastiche, spectralism, neoclassicism—within a coherent oeuvre. Among Mr. Lindberg’s breakthrough works is Action-Situation-Signification (1982), which drew upon musique concrète Kraft , written in 1985, a concerto for the Toimii ensemble with orchestra, and Ur (1986) further explore the synthesis of electronic sound and instrumental conventions.
