magnus lindberg Magnus Lindberg studied composition at the Sibelius Academy in his native Finland, as well as privately in Paris with Gérard Grisey and Vinko Globokar; he also attended courses of Franco Donatoni and Brian Ferneyhough. With Esa-Pekka Salonen , he founded the Toimii ensemble in 1984. Mr. Lindberg’s music is oustanding in its incorporation of a wide variety of twentieth century techniques—serialism, electronics, pastiche, spectralism, neoclassicism—within a coherent oeuvre. Among Mr. Lindberg’s breakthrough works is Action—Situation—Signification (1982), which drew upon musique concrète Kraft , written in 1985, a concerto for the Toimii ensemble with orchestra, and Ur (1986) further explore the synthesis of electronic sound and instrumental conventions. In the nineties, Mr. Lindberg has gradually moved from electronic sound to a reinterpretation of conventional harmony and form. Yet Lindberg has changed – his later works display more contrapuntal compositional rules, even if the sense of virtuosity and electricity still remains. And so does that radical edge to the composer who wrote Kraft Related Rocks: The World of Magnus Lindberg Rite of Spring and Les Noces Mandarin and so on. Actually, the reason for this festival is very selfish – we tried to find works that were among the best of the twentieth century repertoire, but ones that are not that often played but which when put together in this context brings freshness to the programming. On top of that, I wanted to include some thematic ideas – such as the linking of east and west. If you look at some of the pieces played in this series the barometer moves more closely towards east than west. It partly goes back to our visit to St Petersburg when my cello concerto was played at the Mravinsky Theatre. We also came into the world in the same year (1958) but he arrived in Helsinki, me in London. Lindberg's is a distinctive voice in contemporary music. He has a huge imagination for sound and the ability to conjure space. Aura, a concerto for orchestra written in memory of Lutoslawski, is a big piece (37 minutes) which contrasts and integrates the orchestra in the most commanding way. Lindberg chooses unlikely combinations (trumpet against piano, high winds against xylophone, scurrying strings with metal sheets in attendance) or blends various instruments to form a consort invoking far-away panoramas. Engine (1996) isn't so welcoming. Its fifteen minutes of stuttering rhythms and dissonant chords certainly compels attention. Perhaps Berio and Xenakis come to mind but Lindberg has a softer edge (although his scoring can be hard-edged) and some solos are quite playful and improvisatory. Again there are plenty of contrasting timbres and the piece doesn't get stuck in a groove; indeed it juggernauts and hesitates before stopping. The performances are first-class of course. I did wonder about some of the balances in Aura. I thought the percussion slightly too spotlit and wondered if some filigree detail in the orchestra's lower spectrum was as cleanly defined as it might be. This is a minuscule caveat concerning an important release of first recordings. Another version of Aura would be very welcome - I'm sure that Salonen, Saraste or Oramo would have a view on music that is open to interpretation. Meanwhile this DG release is a winner.

A sonic visit to the Alhambra palace of the Moorish kings in Granada, Spain and one of the most magnificent creations of Islamic architecture (thirteenth and fourteenth centuries). Traveling the monument's halls and courtyards, as well as the adjacent gardens with its fountains and streams, the artist/producers record the sonorities of the water, the voices of tour guides and visitors, and some of the Arabic texts and epigraphic poetry that can be found along the garden paths. Yet this serene and beautiful work is not simply another version of "acoustic tourism." Rather, it attempts a sonic rebuilding of the monument, reminiscent of its patterned mosaics. JOSE IGES (Madrid, Spain) is an industrial engineer and a composer. A former member of the Computer Science Seminary (University of Madrid) and of the performance group, ELENFANTE, Iges' compositional activities have been closely linked to radio since the late 1970s. He is the producer of the audio and radio art series Ars Sonora at RNE, Spanish National Radio. CONCHA JEREZ (Madrid, Spain) is an intermedia artist whose visual installations and sound and visual spaces have been presented in individual exhibitions and in group shows throughout Western Europe, in Japan, Mexico, and in the U.S. Some of her art works are part of the permanent collections of the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, Germany, and the Modernen Kunstmuseum of Norrkoping, Sweden.

Modern Finnish composer Magnus Lindberg will perform Dos Coyotes and other works on Sunday, Nov. 17, at 8 p.m. in Barnes Hall auditorium. In concert with him will be Finnish cellist Anssi Karttunen.
