Franz Liszt
Admittedly the greatest pianist in the annals of music, and a composer whose status in musical literature still forms a debatable question, b. at Raiding, Hungary, 22 October, 1811; d. at Bayreuth, Germany, 31 July, 1886. His musical precocity was early recognized by his parents, and his first teacher was his father, Adam Liszt, a musical amateur of rare culture. His first public appearance at Oedenburg at the age of nine was so startling a character, that several Hungarian magnates who were present at once assumed the financial responsibilities of his further musical education. Taken to Vienna by his father, who devoted himself exclusively to the development of his talented child, he studied the piano for six years with Czerny, and theory and composition with Salieri and Randhartinger. His first public appearance in Vienna (1 Jan., 1823) proved a noteworthy event in the annals of music. From Beethoven The result of this environment led to the unfortunate alliance (1834-44) with the Countess d'Agoult (Daniel Stern). The fruit of it was three children - a son who died early, Blandina, who became the wife of Emile Ollivier, Minister of Justice to Napoleon III Beethoven monument at Bonn (1845), are but two striking examples. Having reached the pinnacle of success and fame as a pianist, he now concluded to abandon the career of a virtuoso, to devote his time and energy to creative work and the public fostering of higher musical ideals.

FRANZ LISZT
General Information
  • He made a revolutionary contribution to piano virtuosity, was a great exponent of program music and thematic transformation, and is credited with developing the symphonic poem.
  • He made his early reputation as the greatest pianist of the century, but retired from the concert tour in 1847 to concentrate on composing and conducting in Weimar. He gave premiers of numerous works Wagner, Berlioz, and Schumann.
  • He created piano transcriptions and paraphrases, including all of the Beethoven symphonies, excerpts from Wagner's operas, Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique , and Schubert songs.
  • He contributed to all genres of music, although he wrote only one opera, Dan Sanche , at age 11, and only a few chamber works.
  • He was one of the great altruists in the history of music, assisting nearly every composer whom he came into contact, including Chopin, Rimsky-Korsakov, Berlioz, and Wagner. He also taught without pay over four hundred piano students.
  • Liszt was the first to give solo recitals and to turn the piano to the side (to enable the audience to see his hands and profile). Before him several musicians gave concerts together. He is also responsible for establishing the tradition of pianists playing from memory.
Characteristics
  • Liszt's harmonies were innovative, frequently using mediant relations, tritones, augmented chords, striking unresolved dissonances which, along with Wagner, led to the "breakdown of tonality."

Franz Liszt was one of the most celebrated pianists of the 19th century and one of its most innovative composers. As a small child he showed immense musical gifts. At the age of 10 he moved with his family to Vienna, where he studied with Carl Czerny and Antonio Salieri and played for Beethoven . In 1823 his family moved to Paris, but Liszt was denied admission to the conservatory because of his youth and foreign origin. He had no further formal piano instruction, though he studied composition with Ferdinando Paer and Anton Reicha.
Liszt toured for several years as a recitalist before he settled (1834) in Geneva, Switzerland, with the Countess Marie d'Agoult. One of their three children, Cosima, married the conductor Hans von Bulow and then Richard Wagner; another, Blandine, married Emile Ollivier, premier of France at the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. In 1839, Liszt embarked on a series of concert tours throughout Europe.
In 1844, Liszt was appointed musical director in Weimar; he settled there in 1848 and abandoned concertizing to devote himself to conducting and composition. From these Weimar years come his best-known large compositions: the two piano concertos, the

Franz Liszt (1811-1886)
Detailed Information about Introduction (born Raiding, 22 October 1811; died Bayreuth, 31 July 1886). He was taught the piano by his father and then Czerny (Vienna, 1822-3), establishing himself as a remarkable concert artist by the age of 12. In Paris he studied theory and composition with Reicha and Paer; he wrote an opera and bravura piano pieces and undertook tours in France, Switzerland and England before ill-health and religious doubt made him reassess his career. Intellectual growth came through literature, and the urge to create through hearing opera and especially Paganini , whose spectacular effects Liszt eagerly transferred to the piano in original works and operatic fantasias. Meanwhile he gave lessons and began his stormy relationship (1833-44) with the (married) Countess Marie d'Agoult. They lived in Switzerland and Italy and had three children. He gave concerts in Paris, maintaining his legendary reputation, and published some essays, but was active chiefly as a composer (

Liszt was a child prodigy at the piano and, by the time he was eleven, he had performed in many parts of Europe. In 1821 he left Hungary and moved to Vienna where he studied piano with Czerny and composition with Salieri. Two years later he went with his family to Paris where he was recognised as a brilliant performer and quickly became a favourite of the wealthy French families. In 1830 he met Chopin Berlioz and the violinist Paganini , whose virtuosity inspired Liszt to explore the expressive possibilities of the piano. As a young man in Paris, Liszt was as famed for his affairs of the heart as for his piano technique. In 1835 he eloped with his mistress, the Countess Marie d'Agoult, to Switzerland and they spent the next few years in the Alps and in Italy. MIDI FILE - "Liebestraum" Soon Liszt began a vagabond life that took him to every capital in Europe where he achieved tremendous success as a pianist. In 1844 he separated from his mistress, by now the mother of his three children, and four years later he settled in Weimar, with Princess Carolyne Sayn-Wittgenstein, and was appointed Court Kapellmeister.
