Maddalena Lombardini Sirmen (1745 - 1785 or 1818), Italy
It is lamentable that women are so poorly represented in the list of first-rate composers of western music. Who knows how many potential musical creators have lost their chance to flourish due to social conditions that have kept women t'rom pursuing serious musical study? Nonetheless, even though one would want to be supportive of women composers, it is difficult to become enthusiastic about music that is in fact second-rate. And so it is particularly exciting to come upon the first-rate work of Maddalena Lombardini Sirmen. How did an 18th century woman come to compose 6 string quartets that are as lively and charming as any early classical pieces, and yet full of drama, Iyricism, and invention?
Maddalena Lombardini Sirmen was born in Italy in 1745. Her date of death is uncertain. From age seven she was trained in one of the four Ospedali in Venice. These institutions, started in the 16th century, were combination orphanages and churches. Music instruction for girls was central to the Ospedali for both its educational value, and for the income from public attendance of church services in which excellent music performance was featured. Although Lombardini was not an orphan, she was one of very few children admitted to the music school of the Ospedale based on her early musical talents. While at the Ospedale, Lombardini was taught both violin and composition by Tartini, a noted composer and violinist of the day whose works are still played.

From the "Norton/Grove Dictionary of Women Composers": Maddelena Laura Lombandini Sirmen (1745-1818) was an Italian composer, violinist and singer. She was the second child of Piero Lombardini and his second wife Gasparina Gambirasi. At the age of seven, she was musically advanced enough to attract the attention of the governor of the Mendicanti at an open audition to select young girls as apprentices to the coro (music school) of the ospedale . She was one of four chosen from 30 candidates to study one or two orchestral instruments, singing and solfeggio... After two unsuccessful attempts to leave the Mendicanti, Lombardini was allowed to marry [the violinist Lodovico Maria Gaspar Sirmen] on 17 September 1767. Thereafter she was known as 'Laura Lombardini Sirmen di Ravenna'... Their only child, Alessandra, was born in 1769. "Lombardini Sirmen was highly regarded as a composer by her contemporaries. Leopold Mozart praised her Concerto op. 1 in Bb for violin in a letter to his wife and son (April 1778)... The Neapolitan composer Tammaso Giordini transcribed her concertos as both keyboard concertos and solo sonatas, the latter being printed in London in three different editions during the 1770's and 1780's.

Concerto I for E-flat Trumpet and Organ
By Maddalena Lombardini Sirmen • Arranged by Barbara Harbach This delightful three-movement concerto fills the gap in early Classical repertoire for organists. Sirmen (1745-1818) was a multifaceted composer who studied in Venice with Giuseppe Tartini before touring Europe, first as a violinist, and then as an opera star. The three movements have the serene symmetry, delicate ornamentation, and delightful melodies that are as indigenous to Sirmen as they are to the Classical style.

A Brief Bio of the Arranger Dr. Barbara Harbach, Visiting Professor of Music at University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh, tours extensively as both a concert organist and harpsichordist. Her appearances include recitals throughout North America, Korea, Japan, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Yugoslavia and Russian Siberia as well as solo and continuo roles with symphony orchestras. She holds degrees from Pennsylvania State University, Yale University, Konzertdiplom from the Musikhochschule, Frankfurt, Germany, and the Eastman School of Music (D.M.A.). Her lively performances and recordings have captured the imagination of many American composers, and the body of work written for and dedicated to Harbach is substantial.

Music from the Venetian Ospedali Venetian Ospedali. CD titled "Music from the Venetian Ospedali" by the San Francisco Girls Chorus, Sharon J. Paul, Conductor. With music by Antonio Vivaldi, Giovanni Porta, Nicola Porpora and Francesco Brusa. CD produced by the San Francisco Girls Chorus, P.O. Box 15397, San Francisco, CA 94115-03987 (Tel. 415-673-1511), 1998. From the liner notes by Faun Tanenbaum Tiedge:
"There were four charitable institutions in Venice, Italy, that served as havens for the orphaned, illegitimate, and abandoned children of the city. These intstitutions (or OSPEDALI) were modeled on religious communities, and education always occupied an important position in their organizational design. The role of music, however, took on a special significance. Music not only fulfilled liturgical functions, but conferred decorum and greater splendor on the church celebrations, therefore attracting a larger congregation with donations for the benefit of the foundlings. Through the status and significance of its music, the ospedali earned the designation of orphanage-conservatories. They attracted some of the greatest composers of the time, providing a unique environment for music and performance... "The composers represented on this recording share several traits in common. Vivaldi, Porta and Brusa were all Venetians, Porpora was from Naples, but lived for several years in Venice. All were well known as opera composers, and also composed sacred music. They also each held a significant post at one or more of the Venetian-orpahage-conservatories."
