Some labels CRI, for example release a substantial number of disks featuring women composers, but even today women are much more likely to be seen performing classical music than composing it. Women are to be heard but not heard from. No matter how much the situation appears to be changing at present and it is changing, consider the success in America of Joan Tower, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, Shalamit Ran and others (there are, of course, similar changes going on throughout the world) past iniquities cannot be altered, and it must be accounted something more than a shame that for centuries over half of our number have been silenced, often for no better reason than something as ludicrous as bourgeois propriety. This collection of string quartets by 19th century women demonstrates that the silence was not complete. Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel (1805-1847) wrote over 400 works, mainly songs and short works for piano. Her brother Felix seems to have encouraged her writing but discouraged its publication. She wrote mainly for her Berlin salon, the salon being one of the few socially acceptable outlets for female creativity in the 19th century. Her

Abstract Provenance The collection was donated to Mills Music Library by festival organizer Katherine Hoover . Scope/Content The Katherine Hoover Collection consists of four series, one for each of the four festivals. Each festival had four concerts, but tapes survive for only 12 of the concerts and three post-concert recording sessions. In many cases the the tapes of the concerts exist in multiple formats. In cases where there was certainty as to which was the original recording, only the original was mastered. In cases where it was not certain or versions varied slightly (applause was edited out on some copies) both were mastered. Festival One Festival One consists of recordings of four concerts and one studio recording session of material from the first concert. Each concert was edited down to fit onto one tape of approximately 30-45 mintues in length for broadcast. There are three versions of the first concert: an edited version, the portions of the concert not used in the edited version and the portions of the recording session not used in the edited version. The edited version of the first concert is composed of sections from both the live performance and the studio session.
