Machaut and Deschamps wrote of their own flairs, and the next step in development was to be the self-nalysis of Villon. Machaut was also a musician. He com->osed a number of motets, songs and ballads, also a mass upposed to have been sung at the coronation of Charles V. ?his was translated into modern notation by Perne, who read a notice on it before the Institute of France in 1817. Machaut's Oeuvres choisies were edited by P. Tarbe1 (Rheims and 'aris, 1849); La Prise d'Alexandrie, by L. de Mas-Latrie (Geneva, 877); and Le Livre du voir-dit, by Paulin Paris (1875). See also ". table next Guillaume de Machaut (1300-1377) According to The Oxford Companion to Music , Guillaume de Machaut [also Machault] was born about 1300 at Machaut in the Ardennes and died in Rheims about 1377. He was a learned priest and a graceful poet. He lived successively at the courts of John of Luxembourg, the Duchess of Normandy, and Charles V of Navarre (for whose coronation he wrote a notable Mass). Latterly he settled in Rheims, of whose cathedral he was a canon. His compositions (sacred and secular) are numerous and important. The oldest still existing polyphonic setting of the Mass is his, and he was the last of the age of the troubadours to write not merely the words but also the music of his songs. A complete edition of his works was begun in 1926 but later abandoned.

The tradition of courtly love
Expressed in the poetry and music of Guillaume de Machaut
The medieval period was a time of transition. While religion still played a large part in most lives, much of the thought was moving towards the secular - and the earthy in every sense. Feudalism, and the ideal of chivalry, inspired a notion of honour inspired by a lady’s favour. Imagination, too, reigned supreme, transmitted by the medieval mind into gargoyles, unicorns, and the poetry that was considered a natural form of expression. Machaut’s work may be considered as “classical” music, and this too involved transition. Previously, the “good” music was entertainment for the nobility only, where it now was becoming a source of enjoyment for all classes. It is no accident that the secular chanson blossomed in Machaut’s time. This was the result of developments during the previous two centuries. The troubadours and trouveres had established a variety of monophonic chanson types, from which the rondeau, virelai, and ballade emerged as a means of expression for both poet and musician. (Machaut was both.) The songs of the troubadours were built on the product of chivalric ideals: the notion of courtly love. Through Machaut and later master composers, the inspiration of the amour courtois gave birth to the chanson.
