Marin Marais During the period when the French viol school led all of Europe in viol virtuosi (1675-1770), Marin Marais (b. Paris, 31 May 1656, d Paris, 15 August 1728) was the premier French composer and bass viola da gamba player. Marais spent all his life in Paris and the majority of it in musical service to King Louis XIV ; as a boy, he sang in the choir at St. Germaine-l'Auxerrois; sometime after his voice broke, he studied viol with Monsieur Sainte Columbe. M. Sainte Columbe is a mysterious figure: in life, he was a recluse and so little is known of him today that the only first name he is known by is "Monsieur." Sainte Columbe was a much sought after gambist and wrote some of the best and most challenging viol compositions to date; it was he who added the seventh string to the bass viol. Marais studied with the Master for only six months; in that short time, it is rumored, that Marais had surpassed Sainte Columbe. Marais returned to Versailles to play for the King in 1676; within three years he was appointed Ordinaire de la chambre du Roi pour la viole. He studied composition with Lully and wrote four operas during this period; Marais remained at Versailles until his retirement in 1725. His position was beqeathed his son Vincent; Marais had 19 children, and many were well known musicians.

Thompson Marin Marais was the central figure in the French school of bass-viol composers and performers that flourished during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He spent his entire life in Paris, and the greater part of it in royal service. First appointed as Ordinaire de la Musique de la Chambre du Roi in 1685, he retained that post throughout the reign of Louis XIV and from 1715 to 1725 served under the Regency and Louis XV. His contemporaries recognized him as an outstanding performer and a composer of stature whose works for viols and the operatic stage were known beyond the boundaries of France. These barest of facts represent almost the entire body of readily available information concerning a musician who was a major figure in French music during his lifetime. Little else about Marais' life, and even less about his music, has appeared in print. The most extensive account of his life and works was provided by Titon du Tillet in hisLe Parnasse françois (Paris, 1732). Dedicated to the greater glory of the practically divine Louis XIV, the work depicted an imaginary Parnassus of poetry and music over which Louis ruled with noble forbearance. The leading poets and musicians of the late 17th and early 18th centuries were given places around the throne in accordance with their importance. Marin Marais, in company with Jean-Baptiste Lully, Clèment Marot, Isaac de Benserade, Phillipe Quinault, and Michel Delalande, among others, was included in the royal entourage. Le Parnasse françois is an invaluable source of information concerning poets and musicians of this period. In the case of Marais, it appears to have served as the most important single repository of contemporary information.

Marin Marais (1656-1728). Marin Marais nasceu em Paris no ano de 1656, e morreu em 1728 na mesma cidade. Tal como Saint Colombe está para a viola da gamba na primeira metade do séc. XVII, Marin Marais o está para a segunda metade do séc. XVII. Com efeito, representa o culminar da evolução de um instrumento que tanto brilhou nos salões do tempo de Louis XIV, e que no séc. XVIII cairia em desuso, em detrimento da família do violino. Para além de gambista, Marin Marais era compositor, e a sua principal instrução neste domínio foi feita com Lully. Assim, tornou-se maestro da ópera de Paris, tendo antes já actuado na orquestra do Rei, compondo desde aí óperas como "Alcione", música de câmara, e cinco volumes de peças para viola da gamba. E é na composição para viola da gamba que Marais toma o mais importante lugar. Destas peças publicou cinco volumes com baixo contínuo, e neles não só se nota o grande sentido estético do compositor como também o seu grande virtuosismo. A ele, na corte de Louis XIV só se igualava Forqueray, "le diable", enquanto Marais era apelidado de "l'ange". O diabo e o anjo. Fora do domínio das peças para viola, e ainda na música instrumental, encontram-se grandes pérolas musicais como a "Sonerie du Mont de Saint Geneviéve à Paris", para dois violinos e baixo contínuo, entre várias peças para ensembles de câmara.
