Publication Date: Friday Jul 21, 2000 A different kind of jazz Koto player Miya Masaoka reinvents a traditional Japanese instrument by Robyn Israel Learning a musical instrument in your '20s is a definite challenge. Becoming sufficiently proficient to perform professionally, however, is a feat few older people accomplish. But San Franciscan Miya Masaoka did just that. It was not until college that she learned to play the koto, a 21-stringed traditional Japanese instrument. Today, she plays professionally as a solo artist, as well as in ensembles. Masaoka will perform on Saturday at the Stanford Jazz Festival, accompanied by saxophonist Aaron Stewart, pianist Vijay Iyer and tabla (south Asian drum) player Mikhal Pandya. A number of factors led to Masaoka taking up the koto. One factor was a growing Asian-American musical community in the Bay Area in the early '90s, when Masaoka was completing a bachelor's degree in music at San Francisco State University. Musicians making their mark locally at that time included pianist Jon Jang and bassist Mark Izu. "They were very active in using their Asian roots to inspire their music," Masaoka recalled.

The music was recorded direct to 2 track in the studio, with engineer Myles Boisen treating the sound as the musicians recorded it. But that was only the beginning. Later Fred Frith took the material and completely reconstructed it, using the recordings as raw material for new compositions, sometimes leaving the originals alone, sometimes rendering them almost unrecognizable. Personnel: FRED FRITH , guitars, misc. instruments, etc MIYA MASAOKA : koto and electronics LARRY OCHS : saxophones MAYBE MONDAY performs entirely improvised music. The group performed for the first time at Great American Music Hall in San Francisco in March 1997 at the suggestion of Fred Frith who at the time was in residence at Mills College, Oakland. Recorded back in 1995, three of the four tracks were broadcast live on WMFO, Medford MA (the album is co-produced by local label Tautology), while "She recalled his elaborate shine internal supply, consumer watchdogs agree" is, as its title might imply, a cadavre exquis - Robair recorded eighteen minutes of percussion in California, and then mailed the tape to Massachusetts, where Plsek recorded his contribution listening to Robair's music through headphones, while Norton played along with Plsek (unable to hear the pre-recorded percussion). Such a recording process guarantees linearity and organic development, but necessarily excludes the possibility of feedback (Plsek not being able to respond directly to Norton, and Robair to neither wind player). Intriguingly, the 38 minute live track which closes the album sounds surprisingly similar - American improvisers often allow themselves to stretch out more than their European counterparts - but the other two pieces, each barely two minutes in duration, are perfectly concise examples of the turn-on-a-dime reactions that makes good improvised music such a thrill.

John Butcher / Miya Masaoka / Gino Robair Guerrilla Mosaics ( 482 Music review by Frank Rubolino John Butcher is an extraordinary sound mechanic on saxophone who constructs a plethora of tonal scenarios having austere attraction to match the sheer musicality of his performance. On Guerrilla Mosaics , he teams with 21-string and laser koto player Miya Masaoka and percussionist Gino Robair for a very enticing example of artistic sound sculpturing. The trio winds its way through a dozen selections where Butcher develops increasingly advanced music while demonstrating great control of both his instrument and his body. His lengthy circular breathing exercises produce a flood of ongoing soundwaves that are then interrupted by short, at times trilled, phrases that juxtapose perfectly with the vibrations rising from his partners. Robair has been an aggressive drummer on many of his recordings, but in the context of this trio, he becomes a colorist with a palette of widely ranging hues. He uses subtle shading with his bowing techniques on metal, and establishes a séance-like ambiance with his delicate use of cymbals and other objects for mesmerizing. "Recept" is filled with ample examples of his diverse approach to percussion. He seems to blanket the atmosphere with tempered assertiveness, allowing the involved music to develop as an innate extension of the minds and spirits of the players.
