A Choral Music Timeline Sir Peter Maxwell Davies (b.1934) Westerlings (1977) Listen to a performance by the BBC Singers Previous Date Next Date Peter Maxwell Davies has been writing choral music at every stage of his career, from the elaborately conceived Sir Peter Maxwell Davies (b.1934) View the full image Five Motets , for soloists, chorus and instrumental ensemble, of 1959 to the major oratorio Job in 1997. He enjoys composing works which 'split the difference', being attractive to amateurs by giving them new challenges, and also to professionals by providing substantial musical material. Westerlings was written for the quincentenary of Uppsala University in Sweden. Its first complete performance was given by the BBC Singers. Maxwell Davies describes the work as 'Four songs and a prayer, with seascapes'. The four songs - to texts by George Mackay Brown - form movements 2, 4, 6 and 8, whilst the word-less seascapes are movements 1, 3, 5 and 7. The prayer which forms the final 9th movement is in Old Norse, a language specific to Orkney. The complete piece is an extremely virtuosic work, making enormous demands of technique and stamina on the performers. The excerpt included here is from the second of the seascapes - an atmospheric and stark evocation of the waters around the composer's Orkney home, and music which sits as a choral companion to the composer's many orchestral seascapes.

Die "Celebration of the Music of Peter Maxwell Davies"

A leading composer on the international arena, Peter Maxwell Davies is also a distinguished conductor and a pioneer in the world of music education. Reflecting the ideals of the 'Manchester School', his early works, tough and gritty, owed as much to the example of medieval music as to the precepts of Schoenberg. Later essays in music-theatre created a genre of their own. His symphonies and concertos, written over the last decade to a series of distinguished commissions, are acknowledged as significant additions to the repertoire Works with Schott see: "Music of our Time" - Catalogue

Mode is especially proud to add two previously unrecorded works to Davies' catalog. The String Quartet from 1952 is Davies' earliest published composition written when he was 18; a work which remained unplayed for many years until the Arditti Quartet took it up and performed it for the composer on a special occasion. Yet this is no typical "student" workit is a whirlwind movement which already looks forward to the style of the composer to come, with dancing cross-rhythms and hints of Bartok, jazz and Indian music (which Davies later wrote a dissertation on). Le Jongleur de Notre Dame of 1978 is from an important period of Davies' work. Written and scored for his special ensemble of that time, The Fires of London, it is a virtuoso theater-piece. The libretto, here by the composer, is based on the French tale by Anatole France about a juggler who performs his act before the Virgin Mary and gains her blessing. In Le Jongleur, the juggler is a mime with musical counterparts. The narrative is carried by The Abbot (a baritone), and other brothers represented by the flute, clarinet and percussion. This cheerfully unpretentious work opens and closes with an Overture and Recessional performed by a children's band, who march in (and out), to great sonic effect, of the church where the recording took place.

Sir Peter Maxwell Davies
With over one hundred and seventy published works in every medium which are continually performed all over the world, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies is universally acknowledged as one of the foremost composers of our time. His major theatrical works include the operas Taverner Resurrection, and The Lighthouse, with over sixty productions in the ten years of its existence - one of the most performed twentieth century operas, as well as the full-length ballets Salome and Caroline Mathilde. His large output of orchestral works includes four symphonies and seven concertos, as well as the hugely popular An Orkney Wedding with Sunrise which was written as a commission for the Boston Pops Orchestra. Maxwell Davies's music has been recorded by several companies, including Decca, EMI, Philips, DGG, CBS, and Unicorn-Kanchana. He has a recording contract with Collins Classics. Maxwell Davies has received numerous honorary doctorates. Peter Maxwell Davies lives in a croft in a remote valley on the island of Hoy in the Orkneys off the north coast of Scotland where he writes most of his music. Future compositional plans include the last five of the Strathclyde Concertos for the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Symphony No.5 for the Philharmonia Orchestra and Symphony No. 6 for the 50th anniversary of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Peter Maxwell Davies
(b. 1934)
Sir Peter Maxwell Davies is universally acknowledged as one of the foremost composers of our time. He lives in the Orkney Islands off the north coast of Scotland where he writes most of his music. He has written across the widest gamut of musical genre, and in many styles. The power to communicate forcefully and directly with his audiences manifests itself whether it be in his profoundly argued symphonic works, whether it be in the delightful music-theatre works written to be performed by non-specialist children or whether it be in his sometimes outrageous witty light orchestral works.
As the critic in the Wiener Zeitung wrote following a concert of all Maxwell Davies works at the Musikverein in Vienna "A great and significant occasion on the Vienna concert scene and the public took full advantage of it: the Musikverein was almost fully booked and scarcely anyone left in the interval. I know of no other living composer who could bring that off with a programme consisting entirely of his own works".
Maxwell Davies is also active as a conductor and has recently finished ten years as Conductor/Composer of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, the Composer/Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic in Manchester, and is the Composer Laureate of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. He guest-conducts orchestras both in Europe and in the United States including the Cleveland Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, the Russian National Orchestra, the Oslo Philharmonic and the Philharmonia.
