The Organ Before Dismantling in Hoy S The key compass was 8ft F to top f, 49 notes as there was not really room for more. Peter Maxwell Davies sometimes uses the organ for playing through the music he has composed, but (surprisingly to some) he actually does all his composition in his head. So he uses the organ for pleasure rather than actual composition. Oh yes, and the cottage was then about 1 1/2 miles from the end of the road and it had to be carried the rest of the way which was another good reason for making it small. Scapa Flow A view of Hoy At Rackwick I was met by Hutch who offered me a cup of tea. Hutch still has no mains electricity in his cottage, relying on gas cylinders for cooking, peat for heating and an old wind generator for low voltage electricity hooked up to batteries for his television, lighting and radio. From there up the steep hill between the sheep to PMD's cottage, opening the door, looking around and then another trip for the blankets and tools. At that point the first (and only really major) problem presented itself. The key for the padlock to the outhouse was the wrong one. (Maybe it should be explained to our American cousins that an outhouse usually contains as in this instance what they euphemistically call a bathroom. I don't think that Americans will believe that most Brits over about 50 will remember outside loos only too well.) Anyway, nothing that could not become overcome with a screwdriver, the which I had of course - for the hasp of the padlock.

James Wierzbicki / writings Peter Maxwell Davies interview re: "Eight Songs for a Mad King" THE BRITISH COMPOSER Peter Maxwell Davies says he never set out to shock listeners when he created, in 1969, a cycle of songs based in part on texts attributed to England's King George III. Yet the audience that attended the premiere in London's Queen Elizabeth Hall inApril of that year was hardly prepared for the psychological impact ''Eight Songs for a Mad King'' would have on them. As will doubtless be discovered by persons who witness the Davies-supervised performance of the work Tuesday evening in Washington University's Edison Theatre, 16 years later the piece is still very capable of giving listeners a jolt. The music's excursions into ear-jarring dissonance came as no surprise to that first London audience. Deliberately harsh and ''ugly'' sounds were par for the course in British avant-garde music during the turbulent '60s, and by the end of the decade Davies had already demonstrated numerous times that he was willing to spice his generally tonal and tuneful work with clashes of the most garish sort. Nor were the work's appropriations of music of the past - most notably early-18th-century songs and 1920s-style swing - in any way unexpected. Trained in historical musicology as well as composition, Davies had worked with paraphrases of older music since his undergraduate days at the Royal College of Music in Manchester. Among his earliest published pieces are the 1957 ''Alma Redemptoris Mater'' for wind sextet, which is based on a sample from the Sarum plainchant, and the 1958 ''St. Michael Sonata'' for largewind ensemble, which incorporates into its texture fragments of the traditional Gregorian Requiem setting. His early references to medieval music were more subtle than obvious, but by 1964 Davies was unabashedly dealing with full-blown and only thinly-disguised musical quotations, using them as sonic dramatis personae whose ''personalities'' often changed drastically during the unfolding of a composition.

Interestingly, All American music dates from 1983, making it almost exactly contemporary with the first (and earliest written) chapter of Perspectives on Peter Maxwell Davies tout court Strathclyde concerto It is evidently assumed that potential readers of this book will have a chronological work list to hand; there is at any rate none here. And since a piecemeal imparting of information is one of the major hazards of compiling any symposium, it is a pity that an absence of sub-headings, not to mention dates and forces involved, creates quite unnecessary confusion throughout. To take but one example: aficionados will of course not need to be told of the relationship between the Sixth Symphony and the unidentified Time and the Raven Time and the Raven Time and the Raven , or Time and the Raven sic M Alma Redemptoris Mater

http://www.zeitgenoessische-oper.de/english/mad king/Davies Biography.htm
Zeitgenössische Oper Berlin Peter Maxwell Davies Peter Maxwell Davies, born at Manchester in 1934, has composed over 200 works which have been performed the world over. Early on he concerned himself with the relations between England’s old music (esp. John Taverner) and the European avantgarde (Stockhausen, Boulez, Nono). His first opera „First Fantasia on an In Nomine of John Taverner“ was the result of this connection. The legend surrounding Taverner who, during the English reformation, is said to have abandoned composition in order to become a protestant zealot, throws another light on Davies: his interest for excentrics, loners and other extreme individuals. The one act works performed here, „Eight Songs for a Mad King“ and „Miss Donnithorne‘s Maggot“, are only small splinters from what the English critic Paul Griffiths called a musical universe of „craziness, perversion and delirium“.Griffiths even likens Davies to his characters when he points out that „he has spent almost his whole adult life in quite isolated places: in the countryside of western England and in a small farmstead on the cliffs of Hoy (Orkney islands)“. One would, however, not do justice to Davies if one saw in him only the eccentric assembler of sounds. Together with Harrison Birtwistle he founded his own ensemble „Pierrot Players“ in 1967, which consisted of the six musicians required for the performance of Arnold Schönberg’s „Pierrot lunaire“, and for which he wrote dozens of scores. With the performance of his first opera „The Martyrdom of Saint Magnus“, a local saint of the Orkneys, he initiated a yearly high summer music event for the barren island which has become his home. Last but not least, as composer and conductor he has been intimately connected with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra London and the BBC Philharmonic Manchester. As guest conductor he has appeared, among others, with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, the Leipzig Gewandhaus and the Oslo Philharmonic.

The reel in question is drawn from a genuine old tune, Maxwell's Strathspey, which the composer found in an 1824 collection of Scottish melodies, and which unfolds at the start of the piece on solo cello. Variations and a bold up-tempo to the quick dance we know as a reel ultimately yield to the magic that has been promised right at the start: the northern lights take over at the end of the piece. Its inspiration comes from a walk to a community event in Hoy Hall, during which Davies saw the lights in the sky pulsing in and out of time with the sounds coming from the hall.

This short opera (duration of 50 minutes), aptly designed for children to perform with modest resources, is a version of the familiar tale, though with certain adaptations. Cinderella is an au pair girl who arrives on the scene by train, and there are three ugly sisters who get their just deserts in marriage to the appalling leaders of the armed forces. Writing for children in the Orkney Islands, Davies has also included some local references: these can be changed to suit other times and places. Musically the piece is a bright sequence of little songs, choruses, dialogue scenes and dances, probably best suited to children between the ages of eight and twelve, though the parts of the ugly sisters can usefully be taken by boys with broken voices.

The première of Sir Peter Maxwell Davies' Antarctic Symphony took centre stage of the Fiftieth Anniversary celebrations of the Royal Festival Hall. The British Antarctic Survey and The Philharmonia Orchestra commissioned the symphony, and the composer spent one month in the Antarctic in the summer of 1998-99. There was a tremendous sense of occasion at the Royal Festival Hall, and the audience that included many eminent guests were very enthused. The aim of the commission was to draw attention to Antarctic science through the medium of a major national cultural event. This was achieved beyond the most optimistic expectations. Later performances of the symphony at Leicester, Brighton and Kirkwall were all sold out, and the overseas première in San Francisco was repeated on three nights.
