In 1957 he won an Italian government scholarship to study in Rome. From 1959 to 1962 he was director of music at Cirencester Grammar School. In 1962 he was awarded a Harkness Fellowship and went to Princeton University Graduate Music School; he gave a series of lectures in Austria, Switzerland, Australia and New Zealand in 1965; and in 1966 was composer-in-residence at the University of Adelaide, South Australia. In May 1967 he formed, with Harrison Birtwistle, the Pierrot Players. He lived in a remote Dorset village until 1970, and since then he has made his horn e in the Orkneys. In 1979 the University of Edinburgh awarded him an honorary doctorate of music. Sindsdien heeft hij veel muziek voor kinderen gecomponeerd of gearrangeerd. Na 1962 zette hij zijn studie voort bij Roger Sessions aan de Graduate Music School van Princeton University. In 1967 richtte hij samen met Birtwistle het kamerensemble Pierrot Players (vanaf 1970: The Fires of London, opgeheven in 1987) op, dat zich o.m. specialiseerde in ‘play-acting’: het gelijktijdig musiceren en acteren. Davies heeft voor dit ensemble, dat hij ook dirigeerde, een groot aantal werken geschreven. In zijn muziek grijpt hij vaak terug naar compositietechnieken uit middeleeuwen en renaissance, die hij met een eigentijds idioom tracht te verbinden. Soms mondt dit uit in satire, wanneer bijvoorbeeld een plechtstatige 16de-eeuwse kerkstijl en een foxtrot door elkaar worden gebruikt. Musikken hans framføres over hele verden, og torsdag 30. januar dirigerer han Stavanger Symfoniorkester i fire av sine egne komposisjoner, som han selv vil introdusere fra podiet. Som solist i konserten for horn og orkester møter vi Richard Watkins, en av Europas mest etterspurte hornister. Han var solist med Stavanger Symfoniorkester også i 1998. Det er ikke ofte en komponist får æren av å fylle et helt program alene, men her har orkesteret valgt å presentere en av Englands mest populære komponister med fire ulike verk. Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, vanligvis bare kalt Max, er nå bosatt på Orkenøyene, men reiser verden rundt for å dirigere egne verk. I forbindelse med SSOs abonnementskonsert torsdag, vil han holde verkorienteringen før konserten og fortelle om det orkesteret skal spille. - Publikum får således en sjelden anledning til å møte en internasjonalt kjent og anerkjent komponist og den musikken han skriver, sier Stavanger Symfoniorksester i sin pressemelding. Konsertmester er Francecso Ugolini, mens Sir Peter Maxwell Davies som nevnt selv introduserer de enkelte verkene fra podiet. På programmet står verkene "Ojai Festival Ouverture"(1991), "Strathclyde, konsert nr. 10" (1996), "Konsert for horn og orkester" (1999) og "Maxwell`s Reel, with Northern Lights" (1998).

Maxwell Davies Commission 2004 Help us create a new work! - Be a vital part of a year-long festival celebrating the music of Sir Peter Maxwell Davies - Contribute to the creation of a new commission by one of Britain's leading composers On 8 September 2004 Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, President of Making Music, celebrates his 70th birthday and we are delighted that he has invited choirs in membership of Making Music to help him celebrate this unique event! To mark the occasion Max has agreed to write a new choral work for amateur singers with the aim of having it performed as many times as possible in the 2004-05 concert season - we hope the piece will be performed upward of 70 times in one year! How will the project work? The new work by Max will be commissioned jointly by the choirs performing the work during the 2004-05 concert season. Only choirs who are part of the commissioning groups will be able to perform the new work during its first season and enjoy the benefits of the publicity that will be afforded to the project. The work will be made generally available after the first season from September 2005.
